For me this means that we need to seek to adapt to the changes of life, to “steer” the direction of change rather than trying to stop it. For example, a person may not be able to run when that person gets to a certain stage in life, but they can still walk for exercise. There is change in the method but not in the purpose of being healthier. It’s a good model for us to follow spiritually, to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus while being flexible on what we do and say to follow. Or, to put it in other words… “Change the words – don’t change the meaning”. Change the words Benjamin Franklin once said, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” Well, with all due respect to Mr. Franklin, I have to disagree. I know of a third thing to add to Mr. Franklin’s list. That third thing is change. We live in a world that is constantly changing. Change is something that happens to us in the aging process, in our communities, and in our world. We can rail against it, try to fight it, and lose sleep over it, but we cannot stop change. And, come to think of it, there is a fourth item that can be added to the list, and that is God. God is eternal and unchanging in purpose and intent. Yet while God’s love and purpose does remain the same, God is also creative and innovative in adapting to our changing world. Endowment Grants The Endowment Committee met on July 18, 2013. We reviewed the new financial structure of the Endowment Fund and how the formation and funding of the newly formed Building Reserve Fund, approved at the last congregational meeting, would affect future distributions of the Endowment Fund. At that time we approved distributions from the Endowment Fund totaling $11,102. This year we have distributed or committed to distribute; $6,991.44 for special causes of Trinity Lutheran Church, $6,000 for educational scholarships to members, $7,296 for community outreach, and $3,000 for missions of the ELCA. The next Endowment Committee meeting is October 17, 2013. Requests for grants are due to the church office by October 7th. We’ve had a lovely summer of hymn singing at our 9:00 worship service these recent months, don’t you think? We finished three weeks in August with hymns using poetry of Fred Pratt Green. Pratt Green was a British Methodist pastor who died in 2000 and left us remarkably thoughtful words to both comfort and challenge us. Several Trinity members grieved me that we sang “How Great Thou Art” during communion one Sunday. Too many tears, memories, and feelings. I sang through the tears of playing “Behold the Host”, and another Sunday we boldly sang “Lead On, O King Eternal. We sang older hymns which are no longer included in our hymnal: “To God Be the Glory”, “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus”, and “The Old Rugged Cross”, among others. Along the way, at least one or two disgruntled persons (never the same each week) commented to me that they didn’t know the hymns that Sunday. I understand, and hymn-picking is a hard call. If we

only sang hymns that everyone agrees upon, we’d only sing “Holy, Holy, Holy” and “Mighty Fortress”. Every week. (Even “Amazing Grace” doesn’t make the cut…) Without variety, our song selections would get dull quickly. I am deeply interested in hymns which speak to you. If you have a favorite hymn, drop me a note through the church office and tell me. Tell me your favorite hymn and please share with me why it is your favorite hymn. Much of my organ music is hymn based, and over the years it has become liberally marked with names of great saints whom I have had the privilege to know. Even practicing alone in the balcony, I am surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses. If you’d rather e-mail your thoughts, you’ll find my address on the back of every bulletin. I always look forward to seeing (and hearing) you in worship.

If you’d like to advertise your event this way, we need your info 3-4 weeks in advance. We currently are advertising Fall Festival which is again part of the East West River Fest. The other is a service project to celebrate the ELCA's 25th Anniversary. If you'd like to help make future fliers please contact Diana Alm at [email protected] 3) If you have a one-time event or something really unique Dawn will be happy to write a press release. The

deadline is 2 weeks before the event. If you have one of these in mind just let her know: [email protected] 4) Facebook is a good way to stay current with activities at Trinity. If you aren't on it yet, consider joining just to visit the Trinity Lutheran Church Page (it's free). “Like” us to receive posts about what’s happening at Trinity. Our group page is a blog site where members can publish comments, links to articles, pictures, etc. There are now 180 members sharing information. Your personal page can be as simple as having a few family members on it, all of the Trinity members on Facebook, or even 700 of your very best friends!

Confirmation Minister It is with a sense of sadness that we announce that Cyn Bowen, our Middle School Minister, has resigned from her position effective September 10, 2013. Cyn has accepted a part time position as the Children’s Minister at St. James Lutheran Church, Rock Island, which begins September 11th. We wish her every blessing as she begins this new position that closely matches her passion in ministry. We will be

planning a farewell for Cyn from the Trinity staff but not the Trinity congregation, as she will remain here as a member. The Confirmation parents have been asked for their thoughts and ideas regarding the program. We also ask for your assistance in this time of transition. Please keep this important ministry in your prayers in the coming days. Children’s Minister. We have hired Lisa Raya. Lisa’s hours will be Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings.

Do you sometimes feel at a loss for words when you want to pray? Sometimes we are too tired, confused, angry, or frustrated to come up

with the right words! When you find yourself in this situation, remember you can always turn to the Psalms. On page 849 of our

Lutheran Study Bible, there is a list of 47 different psalms for individual prayer. For example, Psalm 70 might bring comfort from fear

and worry as it boldly begins, “Be pleased, O God, to deliver me. O Lord, make haste to help me!” So try using the Bible as a guide and

support when your own words are lacking.

Have You Tried This? Spiritual Tips for Ordinary Days

It is with a certain sadness that I write this, my

last Middle school ministries update for Trinity Lutheran church. By now you all know that God

has called me on a new journey. And although I

will no longer be with you all on Sunday

mornings, I will be with you not only in Spirit but also during other events as I am not leaving

Trinity as a member. You are all way too special

to do that! And I am thankful God has not called me away completely. As I reflect on the

past five years I have journeyed as

your Confirmation minister I am

humbled by the love and hope you have all provided for the youth of this

church. Our Middle school program

could not be the amazing program it is today without your help. Please

remember this as the Pastors will

need your assistance now more than ever as

a new journey begins

for the Middle school

ministry program as well. The pictures you

are viewing are just a

snippet of what we have done these past

five years. Did you see

us???

Respectfully submitted, in God’s loving service,

Cyn Bowen, a child of

God.

Now that many of us are getting back into our "fall routine", I would suggest adding time for daily devotional into your day, or if this is already part of your routine why not try a new twist. In the 242 section of the Trinity Library you will find all sorts of daily devotional reading to fit any interest/need. There are traditional 365 day devotionals along with special interest devotionals such as "Golfers Tee Time Devotionals".

There are also plenty of devotionals for those wanting to lighten their day, such as "Let Their Be Laughter", "We Brake for Joy" and "God Always Has a Plan B". Or maybe a devotional for when you just need a little pick me up, such as "Hugs From Heaven". One particular devotional I found interesting is "The Gospel According to Dr. Seuss" by James Kemp. Each chapter relates a Dr. Seuss book with a teaching from Jesus. To find out how "Yertle the Turtle" relates to the Beatitutes, or what the "Cat in the Hat" could possible have to do with the Bible you will need to check out the book!

The TLC Book Club meets September 17th at 12:00 noon in Tillberg Lounge to discuss “Half of a Yellow Sun” by Chimamanda Adichie. The Good Book Club meets September 23rd at 7:00 p.m. in Tillberg Lounge to discuss “Anne of Green Gables” by Lucy Maud Montgomery. Join any of the discussion groups. We enjoy welcoming new members! Library Lines are written by volunteers from Trinity Church. A review of anything from our church’s library, including videos, is welcome. Reviews from the children’s and youth sections are also welcome.

I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for the prayers, cards, and other acts of kindness offered to me as I took an unexpected leave to be with my family in New Jersey at the time of my father’s death. It was a sacred and holy time together for which I give thanks . Karen Anderson

Congregational Meeting Sunday, September 1st at 10:00am in Founders Hall. Our Sanctuary roof is leaking. Trinity’s Council recommends that we replace the roof now instead of continuing to spend more patching the leaks and risk damaging the Sanctuary ceiling. We have received $12,000 from our insurance. Council is asking the congregation for permission to take an amount of up to $40,000 from the property reserve fund towards the remaining cost of the new roof. Please attend the meeting on the 1st. We need your vote!

Lunch Bunch September 4th at 11:30am in Faith Hall. “Get Acquainted with Dubuque, Iowa” presented by Norm Moline. Lunch includes Mandarin orange salad, chicken scallopini, rice, green beans, and coconut cream pie. Tickets are $8.00 and are available during fellowship in Founders Hall on Sunday September 1st. Or call Al Hansen at 762-1734.

Enjoy “Spiritual Beliefs of Native American Indians” presented by Greg Aguilar, Director of Multicultural Services at Augustana College. And then explore the park guided by a booklet of thoughts and directions. Sign up with the Prayer Team during fellowship Sunday, September 15th & 22nd. A $5 donation is suggested.

Our Fall Festival is just a week away. Last year was extra special because we celebrated Trinity’s 100th birthday. This year is the 25th anniversary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. So this year’s Fall Festival falls on “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the ELCA’s 25th anniversary—to join together as 4 million members, nearly 10,000 congregations, 65 synods and the churchwide expression for a dedicated day of service. Let’s clean up neighborhoods, deliver meals, collect supplies for refugees overseas, visit our neighbors or help

a child learn to read. Let’s use our hands to do God’s work of restoring and reconciling communities in Jesus Christ’s name throughout the world. Please bring new or gently used books to be donated to the Children’s Reading Room, Winnie’s Place and Douglas Park Place. Questions? Contact Paul Neder at 309-788-6313. We could still use your help with Fall Festival in the kitchen or with a game or to help set up or clean up. If you’d like to help with the Fall Festival, contact Margo Bensenberg at 309-292-0500.
