DESIGN STUDIO VI: VERTICALRESIDENTIAL, WORKING SPACE, MUSEUM, GALLERY, AND CABLE CAR STATION

LOCATION: BROOKLYN NAVY YARD, NEW YORK, NEW YORK, U.S.A.PROFESSOR: HENRY SMITH-MILLER

THE PROJECT IS LOCATED IN BROOKLYN NAVY YARD IN NEW YORK, WHICH IS USED TO BE AN INDUSTRI-AL MANUFACTURING SITE THAT PRODUCES BATTLE SHIPS DURING THE WORLD WAR II. FOR A LONG TIME AFTER THAT, IT WAS AN ABANDONED PLACE, AND RECENTLY BECAME A PLACE FOR CREATIVE ARTS AND FILM MAKING INDUSTRY. REGARDING TO THESE HISTORICAL FEATURES, AND THE ISSUE OF THE SEA LEVEL CHANGE OF NEW YORK CITY, MY PROJECT COMBINES THE CONCEPT OF “LIVE/WORK/PLAY” AS A PROGRAM TO FULLY INSERT THE PRO-POSAL INTO THE RIVERSIDE SITE.

THE INITIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE DIAGRAM WAS BESED ON THE CONCEPT OF MATERIAL RESEARCH ON TENSION AND COMPRESSION IMPACT ON VOL-UME OF MATERIALS, WHICH MEANS THE RELATION-SHIP BETWEEN THE CHANGING VOLUME OF GEOME-TRY AND THE STRENGTH OF THEFORCES.

REGARDING TO THE INVISIBILITY AND INACCESSBILITY OF THE NAVY YARD, MY PROPOSAL TRIES TO ENHANCE THE VISIBILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY OF THE CHOOSEN SITE. THE PROPOSAL FIRSTLY BRINGS UP THE PIER OF THE CHOOSEN SITE AS A VERTICAL FORCE, AND THEN BRINGS THE CA-BLE CAR IN AS THE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION STRATEGY, WHICH INTERSECT WITH THE BUILDING AND CREATE AN INTERSECTION POINT AS A TRANSPORTATION HUB FOR THE BUILDING. THE WHOLE BUILDING TWISTED TOWARDS THE SOUTH IN ORDER TO ACCOMODATE THE POSSITIVE SOLAR GAIN. AND THE LOWER PART WAS BEEN LIFT UP TO GET RID OF THE FLOODING ISSUES. AND ALSO, THE PROPOSAL BRINGS THE GREEN BELT WAY SYSTEM IN, WHICH IS A BIKE PATH ALONGSIDE THE EAST RIVER.

THE CABLE CAR STATION HAS THE SAME HEIGHT AS THE WILLIAMSBURG BRIDGE, WHERE THE SHAPE OF THE CABLE HAS A SPECIAL AETHET-IC WHICH REFERS TO THE INITIAL CONCEPT OF TENSION AND COMPRESSION. TWO PUNTURE WHOLES WERE CREATED TO EMPHASIZE THE HORIZONTAL FORCE OF THE CABLE CAR, AND ALSO FEATURED AS THE DESIGN OF THE TOP PART OF THE BUILDING. THE CABLE CAR STA-TION IS NOT ONLY SERVED AS A TRANSPORTA-TION METHOD WHERE PASSENGERS CAN EI-THER GO UP TO THE RESIDENTIAL PART OR STEP DOWN TO THE WORKING SPACE AND MUSEUM AND SO ON, BUT ALSO CAN BE USED AS A COM-MUNITY SPACE BEEN LIFT UP AS A LANDSCAPE UP IN THE AIR. AS A RESULT, THE PROGRAM IS NO LONG ACTING AS A SIMPLE VERTICAL MOVE-MENT, BUT INTERACTING WITHIN ITSELF.

SINCE THE INACCESSIBILITY OF THE ORIGINAL SITE IS ONE OF THE ISSUES TO BE SOLVED. THE STRATEGY IS TO LINK THE PIER TO TWO DIFFER-ENT SIDES OF THE PIER, ONE TO THE MAIN PART OF THE NAVY YARD, AND ANOTHER TO THE WIL-LIAMSBURG. BOTH ARE LINKED BY PEDESTRIAN PATH AND BIKE ROUTE. PARKING LOT WOULD BE SITUATED ON BOTH SIDES, BUT THE BUILDING IT-SELF DOESN’T HAVE A PARKING SPACE REGARD-ING TO THE FLOODING RISK. SINCE THE SPECIAL CONDITION OF THE SITE THAT CONFRONT WITH MANHATTAN AND BROOKLYN, THE DEDIGN OF THE BUILDING DOESN’T APPLY ANY FRONT OR BACK SIDE, WHICH MEANS, THERE WOULD BE DIFFERENT VIEW OF THE BUILDING FROM DIF-FERENT DIRECTIONS. AND ALSO, THE ENTER-ANCE OF THE BUILDING HAS THE SAME FEATURE THAT VISITORS ENTER FROM THE BROOKLYN SIDE BUT SEE THE MANHATTAN BEFORE THEIR EYES.

INCORPORATED WITH AQUAPONIC SYSTEMS, THIS PROJECT PROVIDES A PLACE FOR LOCAL PEOPLE IN DETROIT TO ENGAGED INTO A NATURAL ENVI-RONMENT WITHIN NATURAL CONTEXT. THIS PROJ-ECT CONTAINS AN AQUAPONIC FARM, A FISH AND PLANTS MARKET, AND EDUCATIONAL SPACE WITH-IN A UNIQUE SHELL THAT HAS AN OUTDOOR PARK ON ITS ROOF, AS WELL AS PLANTS GROWTH ON THE FACADE. LOCATED IN CENTRAL DETROIT CITY, THIS PROJECT ALSO RECALLS THE HISTORY OF AUTOMO-BILE MANUFACTURES IN THIS PARTICULAR CITY. AND WOULD ALSO BROUGHT A PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO STOP BY EITHER DURING A WEEKEND OR BE-FORE A BASEBALL GAME.

SITUATED IN THE DOWNTOWN DETROIT, THIS SITE HAS A FREEWAY RUNS ON THE NORTH SIDE, A COURT HOUSE, A JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER ON THE SOUTH SIDE, AND A FOOTBALL FIELD TO THE WEST. BARELY NO PARK AROUND THIS AREA, AND SELDOMLY MARKETS .

FOR THE INTERIOR PART, THE INNER COURTYARD WOULD LET THE SUNLIGHT DIRECTLY GOES THOUGH THE BUILDING FROM THE TOP TO THE BOTTOM. AND THE VEGETATION SYS-TEM ALSO APPLIED ON THE EDGE OF THE COURTYARD ON EV-ERY FLOOR. THE BASEMENT FLOOR IS THE FISH PROCESSING SPACE, WHERE PEOPLE CAN WATCH HOW THE FISH PROD-UCTS ARE PRODUCED. THE IDEA IS, THE LOOP SHOWS THE FISH GROWTH, AND THEN THE FISH TANK ON THE GROUND FLOOR AS AN EDUCATIONAL SPACE.

THE OUTDOOR LANDSCAPE OF THE BUILDING CON-TAINS AN OUTDOOR THEATRE, A PATH FROM THE JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER, A ROOF TERACE WHERE PEOPLE CAN SIT AND GO UP TO THE ROOF. THE PATH GOES THOUGH THE BUILDING, TO THE WEST SIDE OF THE SITE, WHERE PEOPLE FROM THE FORD FIELD CAN EASILLY ARRIVE AT THE BUILDING BEFORE OR AFTER THE GAME. THE FISH TANK NEAR THE ENTRANCE IS A PLACE TO ATTRACT PEOPLE TO STOP BY.

THE INTERIOR PROGRAME IS AIMING TO CREATE A SPACE THAT MAKES EVERY PERSON SURROUNDED BY VEGETA-TIONS AND FISH WHICH IS THE MAIN REPRESENTATIVES OF THE AQUAPONIC SYSTEM. AND ON THE OTHER HAND, THE INDOOR MARKET IS SITUATED WITHIN THE AUQAPON-IC SYSTEM, WHERE ALL THE SHOPS AND KIOSKS SELL THE PRODUCTS OF THE AQUAPONICS.

THERE ARE MANY STRATEGIES BEEN APPLYED ON THIS BUILDING. THE GREENROOF METHOD IS DEDICATED TO COLLECT RAIN WATER, AND THE SLOPE CONDITION OF THE ENTIRE ROOF WERE DESIGNATED AS PART OF RAIN WATER RECYCLE SYSTEM TOO. THE SHADING SYSTEM WERE APPLYED TO PREVENT UNNECESSARY SUNLIGHT DURING THE SUMMER, AND ABSORB THOSE SUNLIGHT DURING THE COLD WINTER IN DETROIT.

LOCATION: ASTORIA, NEW YORKPROFESSOR: RICHARD SHERR

ASTORIA HOUSING PROJECT IS AN URBAN MIXED USE PROJECT THAT CONTAINS RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL FUNCTIONS. IN TERMS OF THE THE URBAN CONTEXT ON THIS SITE, THE ENCLOSED COURTYARD AND THE RIVERSIDE PARK ALSO PROVIDES A PLACE THAT CAN BE A COMMUNITY PUBLIC SPACE FOR NOT ONLY THE RESIDENTS IN THIS BUILDING, BUT ALSO FOR PEOPLE WHO LIVE AROUND ASTORIA AREA.

THE SITE IS LOCATED IN ASTORIA, QUEENS, NEW YORK. WHERE EAST RIVER RUNS ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE SITE. ASTORIA IS A PENISULAR, AND THERE ARE SOME EXSITING RESIDEN-TIAL BUILDINGS ON THE SOUTH OF THE SITE. ADJACENT TO IT THERE IS ALSO A BASEBALL FIELD, A FILM STUDIO, AND SOME ABANDONED INDUSTIAL BUILDINGS. SO THE CONCEPT IS TO MAXIMUM THE DIVERSITY OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE BUILDING. AS A RESULT, THERE IS ARESTAURANT, A MARKET AND A CAFETERIA ON THE GROUND FLOOR, AND A DAY CARE CENTER ABOVE IT.

DESIGN STUDIO II: CONTEXTELEMENTARY SCHOOL

LOCATION: PECK SLIP, NEW YORK, U.S.A.PROFESSOR: THEO DAVIDS

PECK SLIP, WHICH LOCADED IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA CONTAINS VARIOUS URBAN CONTEXTS THAT CAN DATED BACK AS EARLY AS 1880’S AND AS LATE AS 2010’S. EACH PERIOD OF TIME DISPLAYS DIFFERENT KINDS OF STYLES THAT REFLECTING AS THE FACADE OF THE BUILIDNGS. THE MATERI-AL VARY FROM BRICKS TO CONCRETE, AND THEN STEEL AND GLASS. THESE DIVERSE TYPES OF FACEDES FORM AN AFFLUENT COMBINATION OF URBAN CONTEXT. WHICH IN MY OPINION IDENTI-FYING THIS SITE AS AN UNIQUE PART OF THE CITY.

THE GEOMETRY STUDY STARTED FROM A MODIFICATION OF A SINGLE GEOMETRY, WHICH IN MY CASE, IS A CUBE, BY ROTAT-ING, SCALING AND FORM CHANGING OF IT, THE PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO SHOW A UNIQUE INTERSECTION AND FORM OF THE SIMPLE GEOMETRY. BY USING THE FORM, TO CREATE AN ARCHITECTURAL SENSE OF GEOMETRY.

THE TRANSPARENT GEOMETRY IN THE CENTER IS AN INTER-ACTIVE SPACE WHERE CHILDREN COULD DO SOME ACTIVITIES WITHIN IT. AND SINCE IT HAS A GREAT VISUAL ACCESS TO THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBOURHOODS, CHILDREN COULD FIND THEMSELVES LEARNING NOT ONLY FROM THE CLASS, BUT ALSO FROM THE WHOLE CITY.

AND THERE IS AN OPEN SPACE ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE BUILDING, IT IS IDEALY A SPACE FOR THE WHOLE NEIGHBOUR-HOOD. BECAUSE THERE IS RARELY OPEN SPACES AROUND DOWNTOWN AREA, SO THE OPEN SPACE ALLOWS PEOPLE WHO LIVE AROUND THE SCHOOL COULD STEP INSIDE AND ENJOY THE BEAUTIFUL SCENERY AND LAYERS OF HISTORY. DESIGN STUDIO V: VERTICAL OPTION

LOCATION: CHELSEA, NEW YORKPROFESSOR: SULAN KOLATAN

FROM A LONG TIME IN THE HISTORY OF ARCHITEC-TURE, CONTRUCTIONS ARE USUALLY ANTI NATURAL ACTIVITIES THAT ALWAYS PUT HUMAN BEINGS AS CENTER CONSIDERATION OF THE BUILDING. WHILE AFTER DECADES OF CONSTRUCTIONS, PEOPEL START TO RECORGNIZE THE NATURAL FORCES ARE EVEN AS IMPORTANT AS HUMAN BEINGS TO BE CONSIDERED DURING THE DESIGN PROCESS. ESPECIALLY IN NEW YORK CITY, WHEN SUFFERED FROM HURRICANE SANDY, PEOPLE STARTED TO AWARE OF THE IMPACT FROM THE NATURE. AND ON THE OTHER HAND, THE FLORA AND FUNNA SYSTEM THAT USED TO APPEAR BEFORE THE URBANIZA-TIONS ARE PROVOKED TO BRING BACK TO THE EX-SITING SITUATIONS WHERE HUMAN BEINGS, FLORA AND FUNNA SYSTEMS SUPPOSED TO BE EQUALLY CONSIDERED. AND IN THIS PROJECT, THE SEA LEV-EL CHANGE, THE HISTORICAL NATURAL CONDITION ARE ALL DRIVEN FORCES OF THE DESIGN.

MINIMAL SURFACE STRATEGY IS NOT ONLY A WAY TO PRODUCE A PARTICULAR KIND OF GEOMETRY, BUT ALSO A WAY TO GENERATE A MAXIMIZED SURFACE WITHIN A REGULARIZED SHAPE, AT THE MEANTIME, THE STACKING OF THE REGULAR MODULE WOULD LET THE MINIMAL SURFACE TO PRODUCE A CON-TINUITY, WHERE PLANTS AND ANIMALS WOULD BE ABLE TO DWELL WITHIN DIFFERENT SPACES WITHIN IT.

SO THE PROGRAMME GIVES THE GROUND SPACE BACK TO THE PLANTS AND ANIMALS WHICH USED TO LIVE HERE IN NEW YORK CITY, SOME OF THEM ARE NEARLY DIS-APPEARING NOWADAYS. AND THE SPACE FOR HUMAN OCCUPATION ARE BEEN LIFT TO UPPER LEVEL, WHEN THE SEA LEVEL CHANGE HAPPENS, THE HIGHLINE WOULD BE THE ESCAPE PATH AND CONNECTIONS FOR THE BUILDING AND ALSO FOR THE OTHER BUILDINGS NEARBY.

THE RESEARCH LAB IS DESIGNED TO BE ACCESSI-BLE VIA HIGHLINE PARK. WHICH IS ALSO A STRAT-EGY TO MAINTAIN ACCESSIBILITY REGRADING TO THE RISINGOF THE WATER LEVEL IN THE FUTURE.

RESEARCH LABHUMAN CIRCULATION STRATEGY

BY ARRANGING THE VOLUME AND THE SHAPE OF THE CELL GEOMETRY, THE CONTINUITY OF THE SURFACE NOT ONLY CREATES THE SPECIAL FEA-TURE OF THE FACADE, BUT ALSO GENERATE THE POSSIBILITIES FOR CIRCULATION STRATEGIES. 07SHIMAO QIANHAIHIGH RISE COMPLEX

GENSLER INTERNSHIP

LOCATION: SHENZHEN, CHINATEAM: SHAMIM AHMADZADEGAN + YUN HSIEH + ZIJIE CAO + CHANG CHENG

THIS IS A PROJECT IN SHENZHEN QIANHAI DE-VELOPMENT DISTRICT, A 1000 FT TALL HIGH RISE BUILDING WITH PODIUM STRUCTURES. THE TWIST-ING OF THE BUILDING ORIENTED TOWARDS HONG KONG AND GUANGZHOU, IN ORDER TO EMPHASIZE THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SHENZHEN AS A CITY TO CONNECT MAINLAN CHINA AND HONG KONG SAR. WITH COMMERCIAL SPACE ON THE LOWER PART, THE HIGH RISE TOWER COMBINES OFFICE AND HOTEL, AND MULTI-FUNCTION SPACE ON THE TOP.

MINIMAL SURFACE STRATEGY IS NOT ONLY A WAY TO PRODUCE A PARTICULAR KIND OF GEOMETRY, BUT ALSO A WAY TO GENERATE A MAXIMIZED SURFACE WITHIN A REGULARIZED SHAPE, AT THE MEANTIME, THE STACKING OF THE REGULAR MODULE WOULD LET THE MINIMAL SURFACE TO PRODUCE A CON-TINUITY, WHERE PLANTS AND ANIMALS WOULD BE ABLE TO DWELL WITHIN DIFFERENT SPACES WITHIN IT.

08DIGITAL FABRICATION IN ARCHITECTURE

PROFESSOR: JEFFERY TARAS

DIGITAL FABRICATION UTILIZE CNC MACHINE TO PRO-DUCE VARIABLE MODELS. THIS PROJECT USES TWO WOOD PANELS AND ONE ACRYLIC PANEL TO JOIN TO-GETHER, USING CNC MACHINE TO CREATE THE UNIQUE SURFACE OF THE FRAME OF THE PATTERN, AND USING HEAT GUNS TO PROCESS THE ACRYLIC PANEL, LET IT MELTED AND COOLED DOWN TO GENERATE THE BUBLE LIKE FORM. AT LAST, JOIN THEM TOGETHER. BY USING OPAQUE AND TRANSPARENT MATERIAL, GIVE IT A CON-TRAST COMPOSITION OF THE FORM.

SOCIAL SCAPE FOCUSED ON THE SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCE ON OUR DAILY LIVES. WHERE SPECIFICALLY ON THE FOURSQUARE APPLICATION, PEOPLE USING IT TO ADD CHECKINS ON THEIR CELL PHONES. THE INVISIBLE MAP WITHIN THE INTER-NET WORLD ARE WHAT THIS PROJECT SPECIALLY FOCUSING ON. SO THAT THE PANELS REMARKED THE CHECKIN SPOTS ACCORDING TO DIFFERENT THEMES. ON THE DIGITAL MAP, DIFFERENT RADIUS OF THE CIRCLES INDICATE THE POP-ULARITY OF THE SPECIFIC CHECKIN SPOT, AND ON THE PHYSICAL MODEL, EACH DOT REPRESENTS FOR A SPOT EITHER IT IS A MUSEUM OR A RESTAURANT. AND THE OVERALL REPRESENTATION WOULD GIVE US A SENSE OF THE CUTURE/ FOOD/ ENTERTAINMENT MAP OF NEW YORK CITY.
