Board Chair/CEO Update
Chandler Chamber Living Magazine 4
I can honestly say this has been a year unlike any I have ever experienced in my lifetime. I am sure many of our members would say the same. While the unforeseen circumstances of COVID-19 have put all of us to the test, on September 23rd, the Chandler Chamber of Commerce will honor our businesses, educators, public servants
and community members that make me proud to live in Chandler. We will celebrate the businesses that support their employees, peers and competitors. We celebrate our first responders that put their lives on the line to protect our community and keep us healthy. We honor our educators that got thrown a real curveball this year, but have emerged true to their calling with passion and conviction. I hope you will join me September 23rd at 4 pm on the Chandler Chamber’s Facebook page or YouTube channel to cheer on the incredible individuals and businesses that call Chandler home. Dave Specht with ImprovMANIA will be hosting, so you know it will be fun. We encourage participation with shout-outs in the chats and there will even be some great prizes given away to viewers including two staycations in the sports fanatic rooms at Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino or Vee Quiva Hotel and Casino. If you would like to receive the link for the broadcast, click here to register.
This fall we have some educational and interesting programs planned for our members that will entertain and enlighten for sure. It will be nice to see many of our members in person at Ocotillo Golf Club for our Two Person Scramble, Chandler Chamber Charity Golf Tournament on September 25th. We will be socially distancing, but still having fun with prizes, raffles and a new golf app that I know our golfers will enjoy! There are still a few sponsorships and two-somes available so click here to register for a great day on the links! Our Economic Update is coming up in October and Mr. Sports himself, Brad Cesmat will be on hand to talk about the state of sports, high school through the pros. Brad mentioned that there may be a ‘special appearance’ by a pretty well-known personality so you will just have to join us to see who he brings with him on the Zoom call! As always, stay safe and look for a new PPE program from the Chamber and the City of Chandler coming soon.

Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke City of Chandler @ChandlerAZMayor
Chandler Chamber Living Magazine 8
As we have now received actual revenue results for the first four months which were impacted by COVID-19 (March-June
2020), we are starting to see that the true impact of COVID-19 on our City’s General Fund budget has not been as
significant as initially anticipated. Chandler’s diversified economic base and unique local economy has put us in a good
position, with revenues coming in higher than expected.
The City anticipated a $10.5 million reduction in revenues for the March through June period which closed out the Fiscal
Year (FY) 2019-20, while the actual net impact was only $1.8 million.
Utilizing the actual COVID-19 revenue impact data in March-July to project COVID-19 revenue impacts in FY 2020-21, it
inspires confidence that the budgeted $20 million expenditure reduction incorporated in the FY 2020-21 budget should
cover anticipated COVID-19 revenue impacts for the entire year.
While we welcome the news that local businesses are doing better than we anticipated, we know there are still specific
industries which are struggling more than others with the impacts of social distancing, reduced capacities and closures.
We will continue to find innovative solutions to provide business support and resources.
Some of our current solutions include $10,000 grants to some of the most impacted businesses, reimbursements for
PPE, advocating for Chandler businesses at the Governor’s office and communication of other regional resources.
Another area we are closely monitoring is the level of development in the City. Looking at the numbers for the last FY, we
see that both the number and value of permits issued was up.
We have also seen that Arizona is faring better than the national average as far as unemployment, showing a decline in
our rate since April. As the economy continues to open back up and people go back to work, we are expecting this rate to
continue to decline.
The City continues to closely monitor revenues, scrutinize spending and maintain certain expenditure controls to be
prepared should the economic environment change. We still have a ways to go, but we will get through this together.
If you are in need of business support or resources, please visit: chandleraz.gov/COVID19BusinessResources.

My decision to join the Chandler Chamber came when the Chamber rose to the occasion and took swift, sound actions to help ALL businesses navigate the chaos caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. I was highly impressed by how the chamber “took the bull by the horns” and made sure Chandler businesses were kept abreast of all things COVID. They provide resources, information, and industry experts to actually help businesses survive.
