r. Charles V. Sanders, D Chair of the Department of Medicine, has been elected President- elect of the South- ern Soci- ety for Clinical Investiga- tion. The Society is dedicated to the advancement of medical research and the exchange of knowledge, information and ideas. Its members are committed to mentoring future generations of medical investigators and promoting careers in academic medicine. r. Michael Levitzky, DProfessor of Physiology, is the only Louisianan appointed to the Commission on Colleges Southern Associa- tion of Colleges and Schools’ new Peer Review Advisory Board. Its pur- pose is to provide guidance and assistance to the Commission on a wide range of issues bearing upon the peer review process. The Board will focus particular attention on ways to strengthen the consistency, quality and value of the evaluation committees as they review institutions. Under Dr. Chauvin’s direction, LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans will conduct an initial assessment to evaluate and analyze existing Louisiana Community Health Centers’ academic residency/clinical rotation programs. Then, using proprietary methods, her team will develop a standardized academic residency/rotation program model that can be implemented by Louisiana FQHCs as well as a set of recommendations and partnership strategies to develop effective rotations. They will also foster collaboration and develop academic-community health center partnerships among stakeholders. This award recognizes the Health Science’s Center’s leadership in this area. Congratulations to all involved. Huijing Xia, PhD, a postdoctoral research associate in Pharmacology, has also been selected by the American Physiological Association to receive a Research Recognition Award from the Central Ner- vous System Section. The award recog- nizes meritor- ious research by young investigators who participate in the Experimental Biology meeting to be held April 18-22, 2009. All three will present their work at the meeting which will take place in New Orleans. Congratulations! hrough a competitive process, T Dr. Sheila Chauvin, Professor and Director of the Office of Medical Education Research and Development, has been awarded a grant by the Louisiana Primary Care Association to develop a collaborative model that will increase the number of residency and student clinical rotation programs at Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), or Community Health Centers (CHCs), across the State of Louisiana. umei Feng, MD, PhD, Y Postdoctoral trainee in Pharmacology, and Keisa Mathis, a graduate student in Physiology, are the only two New Orleanians to successfully compete for the 2009 Caroline tum Suden/Francis A. Hellebrandt Professional Opportunity Award from the American Physiological Society (APS). Thirty-six recipients were selected from 91 applicants.
