This week I would like to highlight the liturgical ministry of Usher. Ushers might be more correctly referred to as a 'ministers of hospitality'. Ushers perform many critical ministerial functions at the weekend Masses. Other than Greeters, an Usher is probably the first person one encounters when he or she enters the church for weekend worship. The usher has the opportunity to meet new people and help new people feel welcome. They are responsible for the collection of the financial offerings of parishioners during the 'Presentation of the Gifts'. They help us when space in church needs to be reserved, help keep the Holy Communion procession orderly and perform a myriad of other vital functions, such as calling '911' and making room for medical profession- als when someone has a health emergency and distributing copies of the Chancellor after Mass. In addition to all these important ministerial functions, ushers have an opportunity to meet many people in the parish and visitors and, as a result, build camaraderie with each other. This exciting, fulfilling ministry is open to women, men, teens, and even families if the children have been confirmed. If you can help us with this vital ministry, please contact Lisa Bittner at lisa.bittner@abecket. org or at: 734.981.1333 - ask for Lisa. K of C MI Drive Oct. 12th-13th The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic, family, fraternal service organization. Our more than 1.9 million members and their families are dedicated to the ideals of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. We work to benefit our communities, our Church, and our fellowmen and women. Knights have long placed a special emphasis on programs to benefit people with intellectual disabilities and over the past decade, alone, we have donated more than $1.5 billion and provided more than 691 million hours of community service to them and countless others in need. The weekend of October 12th and 13th, we will be standing outside our church after Mass hoping that you will help us continue our financial commitment and volunteer support for the 45th annual drive. You will see us around town at businesses such as Holiday Market, L. George's and Johnny Cakes. Please note that 100% of the net proceeds from this project go directly to agencies and programs serving people in our area with intellectual disabilities such as Angels' Place, St. Louis Center, and Michigan Special Olympics. Our own Msgr. Kern Council has raised more than $50,000 and has provided over 1,200 service hours to these special programs since 2012. Angel's Place operates 20 homes and serves 93 adults in the tri-county area. On average, Angels' Place will provide forty years of service to each individual they serve. St. Louis Center is a caring, residential, family living and learning environment providing for the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. St. Louis Center is located on 180 acres in Chelsea, Michigan. Michigan Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabili-ties. Athletes develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy while participating in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship among their families, Special Olympics athletes and the community. The athletes achieve their dreams with the support of caring volunteers, coaches, family members and staff.

INVITE AND IGNITE SUNDAY

October 6th

@ NOON MASS

On the Rise Bakery will be here after all the masses this weekend - October 5

th and 6

th.

The bake goods are reasonably priced and they sell out fast, so come early. They take cash or check for payment. On the Rise Bakery is a program of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. The bakers have recently been released from prison or have completed a substance abuse treatment program. They truly want to change their lives. The On the Rise Bakery comes to area churches selling their goods at reasonable prices. The baked goods are delicious. They bake pies, cookies, breads, brownies, cinnamon rolls and other tasty goods. With each purchase of the baked goods, you are helping make possible the provision of supportive housing, training, counseling services, educational opportunities, and self-help programs. On the Rise Bakery is a program where each man is responsible to reach back and support the newest member. The social entrepreneurship would not have been possible without the tremendous support of so many churches and individuals in the metro Detroit area. This is truly a story of what can happen when a community dreams of the impossible and believes in it. Miracles still happen!

MERCY (continued from page 1) The Mercy in Action Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 26th. The day will begin with sorting of supplies which we will be collecting over the next several weeks. Then we invite all our volunteers and everyone to our 4:30 PM Mass. Following Mass we will conclude with our annual Fall Family Fun Day in the Family Life Center, where we will have food, fun, and fellowship. The history of Mercy in Action Day began with Pope Francis declaring 2016 the year of Mercy and the first Mercy in Action Day was October 1, 2016 in the Archdiocese of Detroit. The tradition has continued by designating a day in October for all parishes to work together and put mercy into action and do corporal works of mercy. Here at St. Thomas a’Becket we have turned this into Mercy in Action Days because we have many projects and activities happening in the month of October that show our actions to do corporal works of mercy. The corporal works of mercy are to feed the hungry, to give drink to the thirsty, to clothe the naked, to give shelter to travelers, to visit the sick, to visit the imprisoned, and to bury the dead As you live out the month of October take note of the following activities happening at St. Thomas a’Becket:

October 5th & 6th On the Rise Bakery – Helping those who have been released from prison.

October 6th

Red Cross Blood Drive – Helping the sick who are in need of blood.

October 12th

& 13th

Knights of Columbus MI (Tootsie Roll)Drive -- Helping People with Intellectual Disabilities.

October 19th

& 20th

St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Drive - Helping people who are in need of being clothed.

October 26th

Mercy in Action Day - Helping to give shelter to the homeless.

Every weekend donate to the St. Vincent de Paul Food Wagons – Helping to feed the hungry.

Home visits are certainly an integral part of our Conference and of the St. Vincent de Paul Society as a whole, but they are not required of all of our members. Some members do not make home visits because of their own physical constraints, or their work schedule. Others want to help in serving the poor, but choose not to participate in making home visits. Perhaps they worry about being able to control their emotions at the plight of those we visit. Not all Vincentians are called to be home visitors, and that is fine because there are many other ways for our members to be involved. If, however, a member, new or old, expresses an interest in making home visits we are happy to show them the ropes. They are taken out with one of our current teams to observe an actual home visit or two. Our routine is explained including the prayer each team prays together before the visit, the form that we fill out during the visit, the questions that we ask the clients so we understand their situation, the prayer we pray at the client’s home, and an explanation to the client about what they can expect as far as our response to their request. The form also has sections for the home visitors to fill out later regarding their observations and their recommenda-tions regarding the request. The home visit is an opportunity to meet face-to-face with the poor in our area of Canton. Most, if not all, of our home visitors would say that they have gained a new appreciation and understanding of the plight of the poor. Their situations can be overwhelming, and despite this fact so many of these people we meet are an example and inspiration to us by their positive attitude, their perseverance, and their warmth.

St. Vincent de Paul, pray for us, our benefactors and those we serve.

Please remember we can only take NON-PERISHABLE food (nothing that

needs refrigeration) in the wagons, and please check expiration dates

ANSWER: An ad-dress!

Children’s Faith Formation From the Deacon

Catholicism 101

Pillars of the Church - Scripture Our Catholic faith rests on three pillars: Scripture, Tradition and Teaching (or Magisterium). The Bible is the inspired word of God, but inspiration does not mean dictated by God. God inspired the sacred authors to write, but the authors themselves put that inspiration into words. Most Christian traditions use the Bible as a basis for their theology (as do Catholics!). Frequently they use an approach that accepts the literal words of scripture. The Catholic approach is to “dig into” the scriptures looking at the historical context the author was writing in and the literary form they used. We realize that poetry should not be understood the same way as documentary history! If you are reading your Bible in English, you are reading a transla-tion. For the Old Testament from Hebrew (mostly) and the New from Greek. There are Formal Transla-tions aiming at word-for-word accuracy; Equivalence Translations aiming at “same sense” (even if using different words); and Paraphrases which give you my interpretation of what I think the original words mean. St. Jerome made the first “common language” translation (the Latin Vulgate) in the 400s. The first English translation from the Vulgate was the Douay-Rheims in 1582. This was the only Bible in English until the 1950s (yes, really!). The one we read at Mass in the United States is the New American which is available on the U.S. Bishops website: http://usccb.org/bible/index.cfm. All Catholic Bibles will have introductory material about each book, foot notes and cross refer-ences. We have an excellent collection of Bibles and commentaries in our parish library that you are welcome to borrow. We also have Bible Study on Wednesday evenings. So get out there and start reading! If you have questions (or would just like to chat!) send me an e-mail: [email protected]. God bless! Deacon Jim

Today is Respect Life Sunday! Stop by the table in the Gathering Area for free information and items to use to promote the Culture of Life among your friends, family and co-workers. Today is Life Chain from 2:00-3:30 PM at various locations in our area and across the nation. Life Chain is a national peaceful and prayerful public witness of pro-life individuals standing for 90 minutes praying for our nation. Some of our church members will be at Wayne & Warren. Others will be at various locations. See Lifechain.net for a location near you.
