2018 Season v 3

1964… A Year of Changeby Dramaturg, Sophie Hall Cripe

Violet begins on September 4, 1964 when Violet Karl boards a bus in Spruce Pine, North Carolina bound west for Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her 900-mile journey will take her across the American South during the cultural revolution of the 1960’s. Civil Rights, the Vietnam War, and Women’s Liberation were among the issues beginning to reshape America.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964, signed into law on July 2, 1964, prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender, or national origin. It outlawed segregation in places of public accommodation such as buses, restaurants, hotels, and businesses. However, challenges to its enforcement, and to entrenched segregation and racism, remained. For example, it was illegal in September 1964 for a black person to marry a white person in all of the states Violet travels through.

At the same time, the US involvement in the Vietnam War began to escalate. On September 4, the day Violet begins, Assistant Secretary of Defense John McNaughton recommended to his superior, Robert McNamara, that the U.S. consider sending a significant number of combat troops to South Vietnam and provoke actions to justify an air war against North Vietnam. Thus began a steady increase in troops from 23,000 in 1964 to a height of 536,000 in 1968. In addition, in September 1964, the 5th Special Forces Group was formed exclusively to conduct operations in Vietnam. Thus the Green Berets officially entered Vietnam.

The Civil Rights Act also enhanced the Woman’s Liberation Movement as it protected women from discrimination based on gender in employment. Prior to this, women were effectively shut out of many professions and sometimes prevented from certain courses of study in universities. At this time, 37% of women worked outside the home, and they earned about 60% of what men earned with just a high school diploma.

Hailing from the South Bay, she has worked with theatre companies from Hollywood to Anaheim and back including Rangeview Productions, the University Players, Movimiento Estudiantil de Teatro y Artes and Moveable Piece. She would like to thank Chance Theater for making every time working with them such memorable experiences.

Teodora Ramos (Master Carpenter) is an architect of imaginary places; her hands realize dreams. When she first held lumber up to her ears, she heard the forest . . . Teodora Ramos earned a BA in Theater - Technical

Production & Design from Cal State University, Fullerton and has worked as a freelance carpenter for multiple theatrical venues in Orange County. Outside of theater, she constructs custom pieces for local high profile events. Her work has taken her to Utah, Texas, New York, and Alaska. Special thanks to Mr.

Rachelle Menaker & Eddie Schuller (Associate Producers) The relevant bio is simple: we love theater, and after nearly 9 years of membership, we are well into an extreme love

affair with the Chance, and rejoice in being part of the Chance family. Rachelle has served on the Board since 2015, and just started her 2nd year as “Chair of Vice.” (She hopes not to be kicked off for advocating too many vices.) Producing has become something of a (healthy) addiction. The ability to participate on a deeper level with the creative process and the artists is both rewarding and educational. Associate Producing for Violet gives us another opportunity to observe the talents of an amazing Director, Choreographer and Musical Director, not to mention another extraordinary cast. The themes of Violet invite us to examine how we may misperceive ourselves, and get hung up in being convinced that we have some imagined flaws that prejudice others against us (and us against ourselves). Moving beyond these fallacious assumptions and imagined problems, and instead living life to the fullest awaits us. As does some GREAT music and performances! ENJOY!

Neubauer, Mrs. Seeley, multiple guys named John, Masako, Oanh, and everyone and everything else that has letad her to this point. Lastly, thanks to Calvin, professional dreamer and wordifier, who writes stories . . . and edits bios.

Jeff Hellebrand (Box Office Associate) co-founded Chance Theater in 1999 in his native Orange County. He received his degree from Cal State Fullerton and additional training at Cal State Chico and The

Professional Actors Conservatory. He has worked on both sides of the curtain in venues throughout California. He currently sits on the Stagecraft Technology advisory committee for North Orange County Regional Occupational Program. Chance Theater acting credits include Anne of Green Gables, Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol (Back Stage Critic’s Pick), The Stroop Report, Therese Raquin, The Diary of Anne Frank (O.C. Register Best Ensembles), Memories on the Wind and the O.C. entry in 365 Days/365 Plays by Suzan Lori-Parks. Script writing credits dear to his heart are Is Pepperoni a Vegetable? And Other Mysteries of Love, But I Don’t FEEL Grown Up, and The Beach... Without Leo.

Jocelyn A. Brown (Associate Artistic Director) has been a Resident Artist since 2001 and Associate Artistic Director since 2011. Chance directing highlights include: in a word, The Big Meal, various new works through

Chance’s On The Radar series, Evita (Chancie Award for Best Production), Never In My Lifetime (Back Stage Critic’s Pick), The Cherry Orchard (OC Weekly nomination for Best Direction), and Big Love. Chance acting highlights include: writing and performing in A Celtic Holiday with Craic in the Stone (Best Special Event by Examiner.com), portraying Reggie Fluty and Dave O’Malley in The Laramie Project and Ten Years Later (Ovation Recommended), Blitzen in The Eight: Reindeer Monologues, the Witch in Into the Woods (Back Stage Critic’s Pick, Chancie Award for Best Actress), Cathy in The Last 5 Years (Back Stage Honorable Mention for Actor), Nancy in Closer Than Ever (L.A. Times Critic’s Choice), and Ann in Goodnight Children Everywhere (OC Weekly Award for Best Acting). Jocelyn received an Outstanding Individual Artist nomination in 2003 by Arts Orange County. Outside of the Chance, Jocelyn teaches at Laguna Hills High School where she was an honoree for the California League of High Schools “Teacher of the Year” in 2012 for OC and served as the band leader and lead singer for the Celtic folk band Craic in the Stone from 2013 to 2015. Jocelyn double majored in Theatre and Biology at the Univ. of California San Diego, studied theater at the Univ. of East Anglia in England, and earned a Masters in Education from Vanguard University.

Jennifer Ruckman (Literary Manager) is proud to be a Resident Artist at Chance Theater. As Literary Manager, she has assisted in the selection of the subscription seasons and the On the Radar (OTR) New

Works Program seasons. Additionally, she helped create the Resident Playwright program and has been the OTR Producing Associate since 2014. Performances at the Chance include The Big Meal, Samsara, Maple and Vine (OC Weekly Best Of Award), Time Stands Still, Reborning (Back Stage Critic’s Pick), Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter (Ovation Recommended), Jesus Hates Me, Rabbit Hole (Back Stage Critic’s Pick) and Frozen. Additionally, she has performed at The Oval Theatre in London and in the remounting of Jesus Hates Me at South Coast Repertory. She is also thrilled to be a member of Sword Fights, Inc. in Los Angeles. She lives with her husband, Ken, who makes all things possible.

James McHale (Interim Literary Manager) is a Resident Artist and Artistic Council Member of Chance Theater where he recently performed as John Dodge in the SoCal Premiere of Middletown, and as the titular

character in The Little Prince. He has appeared in many other Chance productions including Dogfight (LA/ OC Premiere), Samsara (West Coast Premiere), Maple and Vine (OC Weekly’s Best Play of the Year), Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson (Ovation Recommended; LA Times Critic’s Choice), and The Laramie Project & Laramie Project: 10 Years Later (LA Stage Times’ Top 10 of 2013). Recently, he played Hamlet in Hamlet and Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead in repertory at American Coast Theater Company where his theater credits also include All My Sons, and the West Coast Premiere of The Hiding Place. James received his B.A. in Theater Arts Performance from CSU Long Beach, and has studied with the Michael Chekhov Association and The Actor’s Center (NYC). James also works as a director and teaching artist. His recent directing credits include the World Premiere of Comedy of ERRORS (ACTC), and The Eight: Reindeer Monologues (Chance Theater). He has taught and directed for local middle-schools, Musical Theater Playground, and for Chance Theater’s Speak Up youth program.

Karen O’Hanlon (Education Director) is delighted to be a Chance Resident Artist who previously appeared on the Chance Stage in The Laramie Project & Laramie Project: 10 years later (LA Stage Times’ Top Ten of

2013) , Passion Play (Orange County Premiere) and The Eight: Reindeer Monologues. As the Education Director, she is incredibly proud of her work with Veterans in the Veterans Initiative Program and Chance Theater’s Youth and Teen programs that focus on empowering artists through creative expression

while building empathy. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Theater from East Stroudsburg University. She would like to thank her husband Nick for his endless support.

Darryl B. Hovis (TYA Producing Associate) earned his MA in Theatre Production at Central Washington University and studied acting at the Professional Conservatory at UCSD under Anna Shapiro (Steppenwolf)

well as South Coast Repertory under Karen Hensel. He is the co-founder and artistic director of the Culver City Academy of Visual and Performing Arts, where he developed an intensive arts program for his school students in theatre, film, music, and art, and has gone on to develop theatre programs at other Southern California high schools, as well as Theatre International at Leysin American School in Leysin, Switzerland. Some of his favorite shows that he has directed include Therese Raquin (Chance Theater), The Little Prince (Chance Theater), Rent, and The Threepenny Opera (Samohi Theatre), Machinal and Resurrecting Antigone (UniTheatre), and The Miracle Worker and Treehouses (AVPA). His biggest inspirations constantly remain his wife Angela, and their children Dylan, Andrew, and Julia.

Sarah DuVal (House Manager) Ten years ago my good friend Heather invited me to her theater to see I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. Before the show even started, the actors started mingling and interacting

with the audience. Not entirely sure that it was part of the show, slightly panicked, I turned to Heather and asked if they were supposed to be doing that. She laughed and said yes. Two years later, I became a sustaining member and started helping building sets and hanging lights, which continued into 2014 when we opened our current space. Little did I know, at that time, that I had met a group of people that would soon become a second family. Ten years later, I’m super excited and proud to say that I’m the House Manger here at the Chance. Previous experience includes working in the ticketing department at SCFTA and working in the Chance office.

Courtny Greenough (Company Manager) is a Resident Artist and Company Manager of Chance Theater. Previous shows with the Chance: Dogfight, Hairspray, In the Heights, Lysistrata Jones, Bloody

Bloody Andrew Jackson, The Laramie Project & The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later, West Side Story, Reborning (Back Stage Critic’s Pick), Jerry Springer: The Opera (Ovation Award - Best Musical, Intimate Theater), Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter (So Cal Premiere), HAIR: The American Tribal Love Rock Musical (Stage Manager, five Ovation nominations, and six LADCC Award nominations), the West Coast

premiere of The Girl, The Grouch and The Goat (Rehearsal Stage Manager).

Marc Sanford (Associate House Manager) is very happy to be a Chance Theater Resident Artist. In 1994, Marc did a production of Little Shop of Horrors at Rancho Santiago College (now known as Santa Ana

College), where he met future Chance founders Oanh Nguyen and Jeff Hellebrand. Marc first performed at the Chance in A History of the American Film as Mickey (plus 4 other characters) and soon became a Resident Artist. In 2004, Marc had to drop out of the company due to the discovery of a tumor about the size of a ping-pong ball on his optic nerve. His surgery was successful, but he moved up to the Seattle area to stay with family to recuperate. While he was up there,he attended the Seattle Film Institute where he received a Filmmaking Certificate. Marc has been a Resident Artist since June 2008.

Robin “George” Shorter (Associate House Manager) is very excited to be working with the Chance. She has been very involved since 2012’s 24hr Chance-a-thon, where she stayed up all night with some

Chance staff members. Since then, she has built sets, ushered people, but you’ll recognize her most as the person who’s usually behind LindaBAR. When not volunteering her time at the Chance, “George” (as she’s lovingly known at the Chance) hands out caffeine drinks at Starbucks in Disneyland and California Adventure.

Chance Theater is proud to be one of the leading ensemble-driven theater companies in Southern California. Recently, we’ve received a National Theatre Company grant from American Theatre Wing, won six Ovation Awards, including two for Best Production of a Musical – Intimate Theater for our West Coast premiere of Triassic Parq – The Musical and Southern California premiere of Jerry Springer – The Opera, as well as four LADCC Awards, including the Polly Warfield Award for Outstanding Season. The Anaheim City Council named Chance Theater “the official resident theater company of Anaheim,” and Arts Orange County has twice named the Chance as “Outstanding Arts Organization.” Known for using bold and personal storytelling to promote dialogue and connection within the Southern California theatrical landscape, the Chance is committed to contributing to a more compassionate, connected and creative community. As a constituent member of Theatre Communications Group, Network of Ensemble Theaters, and the LA Stage Alliance, Chance Theater continues to bring national attention to the Southern California and Orange County theater scenes.
