Bowing my head before the overlord of
the three worlds and master of all, the
all-pervasive Vishnu, I now recite
maxims selected from various sastras
pertaining to political ethics.
A person is most excellent who, through a study of these
scriptural respects obtained from various sastras, acquires an
understanding of these principles of Dharma, And there by
understands what is to be followed and what is not to be
followed.
Therefore with an eye to the public good , I (Chanakya) shall
speak that which when understood will lead to knowledge of all
things in their proper perspective.
Even a learned Pandita suffers by instructing a foolish disciple,
by maintaining a wicked wife and by association with the
wretched.
An unchaste wife, a false friend, an insolent servant and living
with a poisonous serpent in the house are nothing but death.
Save your money against hard times, protect your wife at the
sacrifice of riches, but always save your soul even at the cost of
your wife and riches.
Put aside some wealth in case of future calamity. Never ask, “
why should a rich man dreed hard times ? “ If Lakshmi, the
Goddess of fortune, decides to go else where, your savings will
dwindle.
Never live in that land where you are disrespected, cannot earn
a living, or friendless or there is nothing to be learned.
Do not stay even for a day, where you do not find these five :
a Man of means, a Brahmana learned in the Vedas, a King, a
River and a Physician.
Do not live in places where there is no means of earning a living,
where the citizens have no fear and shame and where they lack
expertise and renunciation.
The servant is tested in the discharge of his duty and a relative is
tested in difficulty. A friend is tested in a time of misfortune and a
wife when once wealth dwindles.
He alone is your true friend who does not forsake you even when
you are ill, in misfortune, famine, when surrounded by enemies,
in the court of the king or at the funeral pyre.
He who renounces that which is imperishable for that which is
perishable, losses that which is imperishable and doubtlessly
losses the perishable also.
A wise man should marry a virgin of a respectable family even if
she is ugly. He should not marry even a beautiful girl of good
character from a lower class. Marriage in a family of equal status
is preferable.
Never trust revers, armed men, beasts with claws or horns,
women or politicians.
From poison extract nectar. Retrieve gold from an uncleaned
place. Learn the absolute truth from even the low-born. And
marry a jewel-like woman even if she is born in a disreputable
family.
Women have twice the hunger, four times the shyness, six times
the daring and eight times the lust as compared to men.
