Best Practices When considering whether to submit a photo for Social Media, consider the following:

1. Equipment

a. Is your camera/phone in good working order?

b. Is the lens clean?

2. Layout

a. Before taking the picture, consider whether to take the image in landscape or portrait

mode. This can make a huge difference, landscape photos and videos are better suited

for posting on social media platforms!

b. Is the image too small?

c. Too narrow?

d. Is the image cut off?

3. Subject(s)

a. Centered: Are the subjects of the photo completely in frame?

b. Grouping: If multiple subjects, are they grouped in a way that is balanced? Are they

centered?

c. Facial Expressions: Are the subjects smiling?

4. Background & Foreground

a. Are there objects in the background or foreground that are distracting the focus from

the subject(s) (e.g. fire extinguishers, medical equipment, signage, clothing)?

b. Are there stains on the walls/floors/subject(s)?

c. Are there reflective surfaces behind the subject(s)?

5. Portraits

a. Is the background a neutral color?

b. Is the background clean of any scuff marks or dirt?

c. Does the person’s skin tone make him/her look “washed out” against the background?

d. Is the angle of the photo straight-on?

e. Is the person smiling? Dressed professionally?

f. Overall professional appearance?

g. Are there reflective surfaces behind the person?

h. A professional headshot is not a selfie. Ask another person to take the photo for you.

6. Clarity

a. Is the image clear or blurry?

7. Lighting & Filters

a. Is the picture well-lit?

b. Can the subject(s) be seen clearly?

c. Is there a lot of backlighting? Excessive backlighting can cause the subject(s) to appear

“washed out.”

d. Does the selected filter (if any) enhance the photo?

e. Are colors clearly visible?

8. Does the image tell a story?

a. Can the viewer tell, without reading the caption, what is going on in the photo?

b. Is the photo engaging/eye-catching?

9. Caption

a. Every post needs to contain an image and at least 3 to 5 sentences to describe the post.
