SCORE Fox Valley—Startup 6 Steps! 1. Who is your customer? Find your target market, define a persona, and list your customer’s pain points to make a customer-based prod-uct that your customer will feel a compelling need to purchase. Having a starting target market small enough that you can dominate will help establish yourself as an authority and upscale to bigger markets. 2. What can you do the customer? Define what your product will do and how your cus-tomer will get value from it. Write out the entire “use case” in which someone will use your product, from how they hear about it to how they use it and how it fits into their lives. Define your “core”, the one thing that you will do absolutely better than anyone else (Apple is user experience, Walmart is distribution channels). This makes it hard for competitors to replicate your business. 3. How does your customer acquire your product? Who makes the purchase? (not necessary the one who uses it.) How will you acquire customers? 4. How do you make money off your product? Plan out exactly how you will make money from your product and graph out when in your timeline you will start making a profit. Calculate the Cost of Customer Acquisition (COCA)-how much it costs per customer, whether they buy your product or not, to reach out to them. Calculate the Lifetime Value (LTV) of an Acquired Customer—how much money you can get from a cus-tomer (subscriptions, new products, in-app purchases). 5. How do you design and build your product? Test any assumptions you have made in the previous steps. Design a minimum viable business product—as in, the quickest possible version of your product that cre-ates value for the user, contains your core and basic features, and makes money. Sell enough units that prove that people will actually purchase your product. 6. How do you scale your business? Map out which markets you will move onto next and how you will move onto them. Come up with a product plan for how your product will evolve to fit other markets.

VILLAGE UPDATES Burr Ridge—

Willowbrook—Mark Shelton (Willowbrook Police Dept)

VILLAGE OF BURR RIDGE

Burr Ridge Named No 8 Best Place to Start a Business in Illinois

Low employment and a high median annual income helped Burr Ridge earn a top spot on the NerdWallet list. This consumer finance start used census data from 285 places in Illinois to measure an overall score based on two main factors: Business climate and Local economic health. In this well-to-do Chicago suburban, unemployment is second lowest on the top 10, at an impressive 2.7%. The median annual income is the second highest, just under $105,000. The quiet community has several major retail areas in addition to office and industrial parks. The village straddles the DuPage-Cook county line. The study found Burr Ridge’s population of 10,615 people supports 2,110 businesses and the average revenue per business is $1,866,314.

Summer Concert Series The popular Burr Ridge summer concerts started up again on Fridays new start time—7:00 p.m. The schedule for July is as follows: August 7 Andrew Salgado August 14 New Standard August 21 The Moods August 28 Chicago Experience

VILLAGE OF WILLOWBROOK

No One Fights Alone We are all familiar with our “super hero” Calvin Hummel. He is the little guy who had some major health issues involving his kidneys and had to have them removed. He is currently on dialysis until he gets big enough to receive a transplant. Calvin’s family (Garrett & Heidi Hummel — Garrett is with the Village of Willowbrook) will be hosting a fundraiser in October. When we get additional information on the event, it will be forwarded to everyone. However, they are looking for silent auction items for the event. If you or your company would like to donate something or if you know of where we can contact for some, please let us know.

You can read more information on Calvin’s condition at http://www.cotaforcalvinh.com/ and check out the enclosed flyer.

Willowbrook Police Warn Residents of Phone Scam Phone scammers are calling residents and advising them that they have computer problems. The scammers advise that they are from your Internet provider, and attempt to get information from residents to fix their computers. The scammers are attempting to access your home computer remotely. The random phone number used by the scammers is (646) 612-3456. The Willowbrook Police Department advises residents not to accept random phone calls offering services, and to contact their internet provider directly if they believe there is a problem with their internet service.
