CHALLENGES IN INFECTIOUS DESEASES

UP NORTH

22

Conferences addressing specically the challenges of northern medicine are rareand highly appreciated by the northern medical community. In addition to oeringexcellent development opportunities, these events also other great venues to establish new partnerships between northern and southern professionals.

is conference is the result of a partnership between Nunavik and Nunavut. esetwo regions have much in common, but rarely had the opportunity to really worktogether. We are proud of this achievement and we know that it will be the rst ofmuch more fruitful collaborations.

Infectious diseases in the North became a very natural choice for this conference.Without going into too many details right now, it is very clear that STIs, TB, lunginfections and parasitic infections are a daily burden on northern communities.ese endemic infections pose considerable challenges to practitioners, both interms of screening and treatment.

is is exactly why a medical conference for northern doctors, by northern doctorsis needed.

Hoping that the idea of a medical conference on Challenges in InfectiousDiseases Up North also sparks your enthusiasm, we are available for any furtherquestions you may have.

Sincerely,

Dr Gabriel Fortin Full-Time Physician Inuulitsivik Health Center, Nunavik President of the planning committee

This unique conference spans four days, beginning on the evening of Friday March 20th 2015 and ending at noon Monday March 23rd. Several activities will be organized during the four days in addition to lectures. While these activities are intended mainly for northern doctors, all health care professionals working in the North will be welcome. Furthermore, the opening and closing sessions will be open to the general public. The Koojesse room of the Frobisher Inn Hotel in Iqaluit will accommodate up to 90 people.

The conference will begin with a cocktail party for all participants, speakers and partners, that is to say, doctors from Nunavut and Nunavik, logistical and financial partners, health researchers and other health care professionals such as nurses. This activity will provide an opportunity to welcome and thank all the sponsors. For partners who would buy the PRESENTER package (see below for packages), it will also be an opportunity to make a presentation.

The next three days will be filled by 25 speakers who will speak on various topics related to the challenges of infectious diseases up North. The conferences will focus on STBIs, pediatric infections, tuberculosis and northern exotic diseases. Please consult the full program on page 6 of this document for the list of all presentations and speakers.

We are also very fortunate to welcome two distinguished speakers for the opening and closing sessions. David St-Jacques, astronaut and doctor will talk about medicine in space, another very isolated area! Matty McNair, internationally renowned adventurer, will present on expedition psychology. Both conferences will be open to the general public and should attract good media attention.

Event description

Target audienceThe opening and closing conferences should attract around 90 people each, of which about 50 should be participating physicians and about 40 should be from the media and the general population in Iqaluit. The prestige of astronaut David St-Jacques and adventurer Matty McNair, who is just returning from an expedition in Antarctica, should make these conferences very popular.

The medical talks should attract 40 to 50 participants, mainly physicians practicing in the northern regions, but also nurses, researchers, administrators and ocials. If the majority of them are working in Nunavut and Nunavik, some will also come from Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and Ontario, as part of a partnership with the Société de santé en français (SSF) (French Health Society) of Canada.
