December at CABI in pictures

Twelve members of The TABLE made and donated 350 latkes for CABI's Ha-nukkah celebration! They even taste tested a few and decided that the sweet potato latke with sour cream and sriracha was the winner! (photo right)

The TABLE orga-nized a Hockey & Hanukkah evening with the Idaho Steelheads. (photo left)

Thank you to Highlands Elementary, White Pine Elementary and River-stone Elementary for inviting Nemmie into their classrooms to help teach a few Hanukkah songs, eat some latkes and play dreidel. This is always a highlight to the season for Nemmie. (photo right)

January Worship Calendar

Tuesday Talmud Study (In English) on January 9, 16, 23 and 30

For beginners and veterans alike. We will discuss passages that touch on contemporary concerns, and learn

more about the Talmud and why it continues to be the central text of our tradition. Bring a brown-bag lunch at

noon to these weekly sessions.

Torah Trope: How to Chant Torah—January 6, 13, 20 and 27

9:15-10:00 am Saturdays before the Shabbat morning service. In this class, we will learn how to chant Torah according to

the traditional musical system. Participants who choose will be encouraged to put this skill into practice, leyning (chanting) from

the weekly portion on selected Shabbat morning services. This course is recommended for B’nai Mitzvah students. It is

also highly recommended for CABI adult members who are able to read Hebrew phonetically. A working knowledge of

reading Hebrew is a prerequisite. Without it, it is too much to take on learning the musical notation.

This class began December 2. Contact Leigh Evans if you would like to join in January. You can reach her at 503-781-8096 or [email protected]. There is a fee for this class. .

r Scholarship Money Available

Application for scholarship assistance for camp, NFTY events, and Jewish-related travel and edu-cation is now available on the website under Learning/Jewish Journeys and under Learning/Teens. Deadline for submissions is January 19, 2018.

Dear Members of the Treasure Valley Jewish Community, As 2018 draws near, please keep CABI in mind for your end of year donations. Whether you come for Shabbat services every week, or just attend a few events a year, remember that CABI is always there. The lights turn on, the water flows, the grounds are maintained and the ta-blecloths get washed. All of this costs money. For most of us, CABI is our spiritual home, a gathering place for support and celebrations. We rarely think about how the kitchen got cleaned or when’s the last time we updated our sound system or our internet access. I personally have so many fond memories of good times spent in the social hall and sanctuary; I am sure you, too, can conjure a happy memory of Feast of Torah, Deli Days, Religious school classes, Adult education, holiday celebrations or any other time you spent at CABI. Because of our beautiful campus and our dedicated congregants, we have a thriving, vibrant Jewish community to access and a place that we can gather and grow. I hope that you will join me in supporting CABI financially this year. Make a membership pledge, or make a payment towards a previous pledge. If you have already pledged - thank you for your support, please consider an additional contribution during this holiday season. As always, check with your tax specialist for information on deductions. Thank you for your support, Sharon Ledesma President, Board of Trustees

A s you come and go to CABI celebrations during the winter holidays, please take a moment to notice the beautiful sanctuary and the recent maintenance that has been completed. The shingles have been se-

cured and replaced as needed, the windows have been caulked and winterized so we don’t get rained on inside the sanctuary anymore and the entire building has received fresh paint. All of this work will help assure that the building lasts for years to come.

We’d like to thank the building fund committee for their finan-cial support and continued commitment to making sure our buildings and grounds are available, comfortable and beauti-ful for the entire Jewish community to use and enjoy.

Last month one of our very own teens, Rachael Metzgar, performed with the newly named, Red Sea Ramblers at the Egyptian theater for the Extreme Extrav-aganza.

In January we have the Teen’s Tu B’Shevat Seder. It is open to everyone in the youth group. Have a wonderful month!

S halom chaverim! Here are some updates as to what we’ve been doing over the past few months.

We started off the Jewish New Year fundraising for hurricane relief by selling honey from the Harbi-

son apiary at CABI and at Boise High!

Our group bonded at a potluck Friendsgiving where our Religious and Cultural vice president Rachel Kaufman created a service dedicated to learning about the con-nection between Judaism and Thanksgiving.

We created a spreadsheet of podcasts we enjoy. If you’d like to see what we listen to or would like to add suggestions of your own, email Carly Hanna at [email protected].

For Chanukah, our Financial vice president Steven Weiner hosted a party filled with homemade latkes and sufganiyot! Gary Weiner kindly made the latkes (which resembled in both appearance and taste as fried chick-en). If asked nicely, he may share the recipe with you.

Finally, thank you to everyone for donating to our Inter-faith Sanctuary drive headed by our Social Action vice president Alex Swerdloff! Your donations made a differ-ence in the lives of Boise’s homeless!

A friendly reminder that all proceeds from the coffee bar help us put on more fun and educational events, so next time you see a teen behind the counter, pick up a latte (or Italian so-da, if that’s more your style!).

E lizabeth Rodgers directed (with Rob-

by Henson) the movie Exodus 1947. It is now available for view-ing on Amazon Prime. The documentary is about the

secret American involvement in “illegal” immigration to Pales-tine after WWII. The film provides a window into the history of the creation of Israel, specifically after WWII and pre-statehood.
