About Chalkboards UKChalkboards UK is part of the Porter and Woodman Group.

We offer the very best in chalkboards, chalkboard displays, blackboards,point-of-sale and signage.

We are proud to say that all our wooden products are manufactured in our factory inthe West Midlands. We provide jobs for local craftsmen and women and are proud ofwhat we produce.

Our range reflects products that have been developed over the years for ourcustomers' needs. These include easels, ‘A’-frames, changing displays, menu holders,pub accessories and products for the home.

Each chalkboard is available singly or at a considerable discount in larger quantities.

All the chalkboards illustrated can be enhanced by printing. Examples of this facility can beseen in the “Printing” section.

All timber is bought from renewable sources where more trees are planted than arecut down.

The surface is verysmooth and flat which makes it perfect for writing on with liquid chalk pens. HPL can be cleaned with a damp cloth time and againwithout it damaging the surface in any way. For anyone intending to use liquid chalk pens on their blackboards repeatedly we wouldalways recommend a HPL board.

Printing for blackboards and chalkboards

ScreenprintingWe personalise the majority of our boards for customers by screen printing. We have many years of experiencein this field of printing and have undertaken work for many large retailers, restaurant chains and pub groups.

Screenprinting allows us to lay down any number of ‘spot’ colours to achieve the look our customers want.

We can also offer full-colour process screenprint which allows us to ‘mix’ colours on the screen to achieve that ‘litho’ look.

A further method of board personalisation is by applying a PVC printed banner - this is ideal for detailed, low run artwork.Please email us for a quote.

For larger runs of 4 colour work we can also offer digital print. Please email us for a quote.

We only charge for set up costs so even if you order 10 of the same item (with the same print) you only need to add oneset up charge to your basket.

Prices above are based on artwork taking up less than an A2 area (594 x 420mm), due to the size of our screens. If yourartwork covers more this then, say A1, then 2 set up costs will be charged. Any queries just email us!

Kozel BeerKozel is one of the Czech Republic’s best exported beers.

How Chalkboards UK became involved in there-launching of their brand in the UK is a story in itself.

Originally the enquiry came in for 40 wooden boxesthat were to be a small promotional item to hold adrinking game. We had do a next day delivery as theclient was being visited and it was a last minute idea.

The meeting went well and a further 200 boxes wereordered - this time they were to be branded with the Kozel logo -again there was next to no time to get the order out.

The Kozel branding team were impressed with the quality we could achieve by screenprinting onto awooden surface and working with the team we designed a range of wooden items that all promoted theKozel brand.

Here’s some of those items

5 to 10 printed samples of each product were produced so they could be shown to all the principal stakeholders. Furtherrefinements were made and a finished spec agreed before final orders were placed and deliveries made.

Sailor Jerry Spiced RumSailor Jerry is one of the Caribbean’s original and most famous spiced rums.

The brand team identified Chalkboards UK as a possible supplier, though theywere currently buying from China.

We were able to demonstrate that not only could we match the price but weoffered many logistical improvements - namely:

● Lead time of 2-3 weeks instead of 3-4 months

● Smaller and more regular run quantities rather than having to fill acontainer and sit on stock

● UK production from an audited source

● Carbon footprint reduced

Having bought an A2 printed and framed chalkboard thebrand team approached us with an idea for a tear off printedposter board.

Once more this had previously been sourced in China butthey wondered if we could make it in the UK.

Price was again an issue but we were able to match theChinese price as well as introduce all the other benefits ofUK production.

The original design was also improved by introducing alacquered backing board of better quality than the originalstained version.

Our ‘in-house’ design team were able to amend artwork wealready had to provide a better visual fit to the product andmake it more ‘eye-catching’.

How to look after your chalkboards

Chalkboard SurfacesWe use four types of surface for all our chalkboards.

1. MDFThe most common surface we use is waterproof MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard). The MDF is hand painted twicewith high quality chalkboard paint. We paint it twice to ensure colour density and durability. These boards can be usedindoors or outdoors.

● This type of board is perfect for use with stick chalk althoughliquid chalk pens can also work.

● To clean the boards a damp cloth with a mild detergent shouldbe used.

● Never use an abrasive cleaner as this will remove thechalkboard paint

● Over time the boards will begin to shadow and go grey as moreand more of the chalk dust is deposited on the boards.

● You can easily recover the board surface by applying a freshcoat of chalkboard paint (see Chalkboard Accessories). This isextremely quick drying and returns the surface to its original darkblack finish.

2. 3mm MDF laminateWe use this surface on some of our framed boards. This surface is perfect foruse with liquid chalk pens but is too smooth to make it ideal for stick chalk.

● To clean the boards a damp cloth with a mild detergent (or our chalkboardcleaner) should be used.

● Never use an abrasive cleaner as this will remove thelaminate surface.

● Providing it is looked after this surface should last for many years.

3. HPL (High Pressure Laminate)We use this surface on our premium boards. HPL is very durableand smooth and is perfect for use with Liquid chalk pens, althoughstick chalk is also just as good.


● Never use an abrasive cleaner as this will damage thesurface.

● HPL can be used time and again without the surfacedeteriorating.

4. FoamexWe use this material on some of our hand held table top boards. Itis very smooth and is perfect for use with Liquid chalk pens.


● Never use an abrasive cleaner as this will damage the surface.

● Foamex can be used time and again without the surface deteriorating.

This table may help show the differences between the surfaces we use:

The Chalkboard FrameThe framing we most commonly use is made from softwood. This is treated with a waterproof stain to make itusable both indoors and outside.

If being used outdoors you should treat these frames in a similar way to how you would look after outdoor wooden furniture.Over time the wood will weather and we would recommend that it is treated with a simple weather proof stain every 12 months.

We also use a hardwood frame on some boards which will last for much longer before weathering becomes apparent.

Chalkboards UK and the environmentChalboards UK takes its environmental responsibilities extremely seriously. As part of the Porter & WoodmanGroup it signs up to the following codes of practise.

● Recycling - all waste paper, cardboard and wood is sent for recycling. Alloffices have two waste bins, one for land-fill rubbish, the other for recyclablewaste.

● E-mails - all staff are encouraged not to print out received e-mails anddocuments unless absolutely necessary.

● Company Cars - there are no company cars within the business. Mileageallowance is provided, but staff are encouraged to plan their journeys asefficiently as possible. eg. A sales call in London will be combined with asmany other calls as possible in the area or en-route.

● Deliveries - Wherever possible, an overnight courier service is used,ensuring efficient use of logistics. If same day delivery is required, localcourier companies or our own vehicles are used. Porter and Woodman alsooperates a co-operative system with its suppliers, where deliveries to thesame or nearby destinations are combined, eliminating duplicated journeys.

● Wood and Paper Purchasing - as suppliers of raw materials take theirenvironmental responsibilities ever more seriously, it is difficultto find any wood or paper material that isn't either FSC orPEFC registered.

All the timber products we buy come from countries affiliated to the FSC.

The softwood we purchase comes from Scandinavian mills who are not onlyaudited by the FSC but also subscribe to their own country’s stringentenvironmental policies - more trees are planted than are cut down.
