Riddle.. Riddle.. What’s the answer? When I'm new I'm remarkably plain, But after first use, I'm never the same, People clean me a lot, but I'm never like new, The changes come off, but leave residue. You will have seen me in your early years, I'm definitely a tool for the eyes, not the ears, But there is a sound that I can make, To cause the strongest man to quake. I feel I should give more of a clue, But I don't want to make it too easy for you. I may have bored you, or enthralled, But can you tell me what I'm called? CHALKBOARD

What is chalkboard ?• the oldest and most traditional classroom piece of

equipment

• the most widely used instructional aid

• it is popular for it allows spontaneity, speed, and change

• it can be used for displaying pictures and important clippings, drawing sketches and diagrams to help illustrate points of a lesson, projecting films and other materials

• it is flexible and familiar

Guidelines for using chalkboard

Write legibly and large enough for everybody to see. Use the chalkboard as if you were writing on paper.

While writing, stand to one side of the board as possible so you can maintain eye contact with the students.

While working on the chalkboard, stand to the side so you don’t block you students’ view.

Don’t talk to chalkboard while writing on it.

Organize your chalkboard work ahead of time.

Don’t clutter the board.

Use standard form for any abbreviations.

If the chalkboard space is limited, draw a line down the middle of the board.

Utilize colored chalk, rulers, string, stencils, and other materials to make your illustration more effective.

Don’t get embarrassed or show resentment if you make a mistake and a student corrects you. Thank student for the help instead.

Establish routine uses for the chalkboard.

Erase the chalkboards completely after you finish, and kept them clean.

Don’t overuse the chalkboard.

if you are working with young or low-achieving students, write complete sentences. They need practice seeing and writing correct grammar.

Generate a theme and adopt it as headline.

Wording should be simple and according to viewer’s language.

Gather or produce materials such as photos.

Select a background material.

Lines can be made from ribbon, yarn, string wire, or paper strips.

Letters can be freehand drawn from lettering guide, cut from construction paper.
