2009 Races 3 GP’s, an EC-B, EC 40+, and the World Champs on Lostallo. No EC-A this year due to the race in Switzerland. So a small program in this economic very difficult year. The first GP was the one in France, organized by RSMA on 21 and 22 of March. 55 Drivers made the trip to the North of Paris for this race. The race was won by Pole man Robert Pietch after a good battle with Rick Vrielijnck. 1 PIETSCH Robert D 152 45:06.69

The second GP was in Heemstede Holland during the week of 25th/26th of April. Only about 46 drivers made the trip to Holland. As always well organized, but during the Sunday some rain made it an interesting final. However Mark Green, used to British wetter did what he had to do and made it a start to finish win. 1 Mark Green GB 155 45:05.194

EC-B Cassino/Italy. The next race was the EC-B in Cassino, a wonderful track about 150 km’s south of Roma, named after the most famous Italian RC car driver, Lamberto Collari. This is a beautiful track in a beautiful part of Italy. So besides the track there is a lot to see if you like old Italian history. The team of Gianluca Decina organized a very well attended EC-B. Everybody liked the track and the organization. The family in the restaurant did a good business, since most of the people attending the race stayed late to have diner in this facility, where the food was excellent if you like Italian cuisine. During the whole week there was good weather and in the final on the Sunday we started with a wet track. It dried quickly and we were lucky to finish just in time before it started to rainat the end of the afternoon. Italian drivers are always good at their own track and although it was a B-race there are a lot of good Italian drivers, so it was no surprise to see a few of them in the top. Mack, Abisset, Lackner and young Tony Gruber made it also to the final, but pole-man Raiola did not make any mistake and made sure the big trophy stayed in Italy. Grazi Cassino, Grazi AMSCI, Grazi Gianlucca Decina and your team.

Lostallo, WC 1:8th 2009. No EC-A this year due to the IFMAR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2009 in Lostallo, Switzerland. Already at the AGM last year we saw that a lot of people wanted to drive in this World Championship. EFRA was lucky because of the economic situation. A lot of other bloc did not take their full number of places so finally we got more than 100 allocations. As usual the organization in Lostallo was good; after all they have been organizing international races for the past 7 or 8 years. Robert Pietsch, the German driver was the quickest man all week. During the practice he was in front and also during qualifying he showed some great driving. The only driver that came very close was Collari, who did all his run’s on a one pitstop strategy. Also very fast was Alberto Picco and Mark Green. These were also the drivers that made the top 4. On the Saturday we saw some excited and very good racing in the quarters and semi finals. Morgantie and Cyrul, both from the USA had some bad luck, when they hit an engine problem while in first position. This made the way to trhe final free for Bertin, Balestri,

Takaaki, Swauger, Vrielijnck en D’hondt. Unfortunately a big shower just before the start of the final caused a delay and it was decided to run the final on the Sunday morning. With a sunny sky the next day the final started at 10.00 and 1 hour later Collari got his 9th World Tittle. Pietsch took the lead with the start, but Collari was having a 5 minutes fuel stop strategy and after about 20 minutes het got in control of that fuel stop and took the lead. He never looked back and was in control of the race from that moment. Behind him the battle for the other 3 podium places was heavy. Pietsch dropped down after he had an engine stop. Balastri had and extra stop because of some problems, so finally Swauger and Bertin could take the well deserved spots 2 and 3. The banquet Saturday evening was a little bit hectic, due to too many people, but overall it was a well organised event. The next WC will be in the USA in 2011.

EC 40+ for 1/8th scale and EC235mm in Alcobendas/Madrid/Spain.
During the weekend of September 5th and 6th ARCA in Spain organized the EC40+. This track, situated in the Industrial area of Alcabendas is build on top of a Metro Station and close to various hotels. On top of a metro station means also easy access from the family to the center of Madrid if they get bored in watching cars. This track was built a few years ago after the old ARCA track was removed due to changes in the area. The race date was a little bit late this year, so not from all countries we could expect to see racers. On the other hand, weather conditions in Madrid were much better a little bit later in the season as in July of early August. About 55 drivers made their entries, unfortunately about 44 showed up, coming from Spain, France, Italy, England, Hungary, Monaco. It was also the last year the 235mm race was organized. All drivers had an enjoyable week with good weather and free practice. Qualifying started on Saturday and all drivers run 6 heats. It was Jacky Mouton in the 40+ that made the pole and Glynn Beal in 235mm. Flat chassis drivers from France and Monaco drove their own race on their request and made a separate final. In 235mm all drivers went straight into the final and in 1/8th 40+ we had to run semi finals. The first final was the 235mm and with Glyn Beal from England on pole the 10 drivers went away for a 45 minute battle. Peracho who started as number 3 was able to overtake Beal after a few minutes and was able to pull away slowly. When Beal flamed out during one of the first fuel stop the gap was there and although Beal managed to come back within one lap after 35 minutes he had to retire a few minutes before the end. In the meantime some of the locals and Gabor from Hungary battled for the positions 2 and 3, with Martinez Paredes taking 2nd spot.

The next final was the flat chassis race. The last couple of years we see a group of flat chassis drivers coming back tot the EC40+. They like to be part of the race and some of them have been driving into the EC40+. However due to their techniques they cannot compete with a normal 4wd independent model race car. So as long as they have between 8 band 10 drivers EFRA has a gentlemen agreement to let them run their own race with 3 trophies for the winners. The final was very nice to watch with very close racing for 30 minutes. At the end it was Velvindron (from Martinique) that took the lead and finished just before Marc Dell Unto. The last final was the EC40+ 1/8th scale event. Mouton, Lara, Nougier and Lara were the top 4 and that was how they started for the first minutes. From the semies we got another 6 Spanish drivers in to the final. One of them Alberto Cabezas, the father from Oscar Cabezas, who changed roles for the weekend. Mouton took the lead and never looked back anymore. Nougier was able to follow for about 10 minutes, but than had a flame out. The Lara’s were able to follow Mouton with half a lap, but finally also had to back off, due to some small problems. Second place after a good battle went to Cayetano Martinez, just in front of Aldudo. Chairman’s report 2009 12
Thanks to ARCA for organizing this event. Good weather and a sportive admosphere made this a very nice event. So the 235mm EC is over. Next year we go to Sollenau/Austria. There is a proposal to run 200mm 40+ on this event together with 1/8th. I think there will be enough 40+ drivers available to give a good number of drivers in 200mm IC track.
Monaco GP. During the weekend of 24 and 25 of October the Monaco GP was organized at the track of La Turbie. I do not have a full report for the moment, but from the results I got I understand 29 drivers were present at the race. This is the result of the 45 minutes final.

Not allowed to run the EC-B 1/8 in 2010: Top 30 from the ranking 1/8th, Top 30 1/10th IC track, finalists from EC-B 2009 and top 10 drivers from this years EC’s in the other classes. Mufflers for 2010 and NEXT. For next year nothing will change. We will have to use the old mufflers from the past according to the list. However from 201o there will be a complete new list. Although I have tried to chase the manufacturers this year to have samples available there are only a few that have made some progress. However I will chase them the next months to be sure we not have the same situation as in the past. We need to have good samples half way 2010 to be able to see the progress. It will be difficult and it will cost some power, but for the benefit of 1/8th scale on road racing this is a MUST. Everybody should also be aware that during 2011 we not only have to use a homologated muffler and INS box system, but there will be measurements on the track to take out those cars which are louder than the “average”. It is the same like in the Electric classes, you use a homologated battery, but after the final the battery is 0.15mm to big, so you loose the result. Fuel Tanks. Manufacturers, WATCH your fuel tanks !! We have seen the last years that manufacturers are taking advantage from the heat expansion of the tanks. More and more they are using plastics that will expand by temperatures over 40 degrees and shrink below 30 degrees. However in some cases it means that during technical inspection we can measure a bigger volume as 125cc and also after an initial cool down period. We will not measure over and over to give the tank the time to shrink. If the tanks are out of the limits during the time mentioned in the rules you are OUT. So please make sure you are not running on the limit.
Sander de Graaf / EFRA 1:8 scale section chairman.
