Sweden 17 th – 22 nd of April 2006 1 Chairman The 59 th Nordic Technical Universities Shipbuilder Congress, NTHS, took place in Sweden the 17 th to 21 th of April. The congress was hold in Stockholm, The Swedish delegation offered us a wide technical and social program. The program consisted of visits to a naval base, a propulsion manufacturer, small boat manufacture and a museum. At almost every location we got “hands-on” experiences from the production line. This brings up one of the main goals of NTHS, which is to give the students a physical understanding of their educational field. The congress was closed with a grand banquet where the NTHS regalia were handed over to next years host the Norwegian delegation and Chairman Ole Jørgen Årvik from NTNU. Since 1948, NTHS has been arranged in different Nordic countries. It’s a remarkable tradition, where we establish contacts with universities from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, as well as with the “Nordic ship industry”. Some of our sponsors have previously been NTHS members, and remember their time as a very good learning experience and a lot of fun! I believe the next year’s congress in Norway will be a success and a great celebration of the 60 years tradition of NTHS. I also want to use this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors that have made it possible for us to attend this congress. NTHS is not just an investment for the delegates, but also for the sponsoring companies. They make sure we get a wider background when we apply for their jobs. N T H S Background - Every year since 1947, there has been arranged a congress for marine technology students from five Nordic technical universities; The Nordic Technical Universities Shipbuilders Congress, NTHS: Helsinki University of Technology - Helsinki, Finland

Chalmers University of Technology - Gothenburg, Sweden

Royal Institute of Technology - Stockholm, Sweden

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology - Trondheim, Norway

The Technical University of Denmark - Copenhagen, Denmark

Up to ten students from each university, 50 students in total, will meet to visit industries as well as for social events. Students at the start of their future carrier as naval architects will get to know more about marine related industry, other students and cultures during the week. The responsibility for the congress circulates between the five universities. This year the Swedish delegation is arranging the 59th congress, and the weeklong program will start in Stockholm, then exploring Kristinehamn and Öregrund.

NORDENS TEKNISKA HÖGSKOLORS SKEPPSBYGGARE

Antagna vid den XIII:de kongressen i Köpenhamn med ändringar fram till 1997 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- § 1. Föreningens namn är ”Nordens Tekniska Högskolors Skeppsbyggare”. § 2. Föreningens medlemmar utgörs av samtliga skeppsbyggare vid: Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU) Köpenhamn Chalmers Tekniska Högskola (CTH) Göteborg Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (KTH) Stockholm Norges Tekniske Naturvitenskaplige Universitet (NTNU) Trondheim Tekniska högskolan i Finland Helsingfors § 3. Föreningens ändamål är att främja kontakten mellan medlemmarna, samt förmedla kunskaper inom skeppsteknik i de nordiska länderna. § 4. Föreningens styrelse består av sex ledamöter; president och kassör från den högskola som anordnar kongressen, samt en ordförande från varje högskola. Presidenten väljs av styrelsen, övriga ledamöter väljs av respektive högskola.

§ 5. Kongressen I Varje år skall en kongress anordnas i något av de fyra nordiska länderna. Medverkande högskolor turas om att stå för värdskapet. II Varje medlemsland har rätt att deltaga med tio deltagare var. Om något land önskar deltaga med fler medlemmar får detta endast ske efter

överenskommelse med värdlandet. III Kongressen bör omfatta:

a. Föredrag följt av diskussion, samt studiebesök vid laboratorier, varv och andra industrianläggningar. b. Ett styrelsemöte, där styrelsen samt blivande ordföranden för varje högskola deltar. På mötet behandlas följande: - Val av nästa års president. - Beslut om tid och plats för nästa års kongress. - Eventuella stadgeändringar. IV Inbjudan till kongressen skall sändas ut senast två månader innan kongressen äger rum och skall åtföljas av ett (preliminärt) program. § 6. Kongressens officiella språk är, så långt detta är möjligt, svenska. § 7. Medlemsavgift kan ej krävas. Eventuellt kan dock en deltagaravgift till kongressen begäras in, för att täcka kongressens utgifter. Föreningen får inte ta på sig något ekonomiskt ansvar. § 8. De olika högskolorna skall utbyta studiehandböcker där aktuella kurser samt litteratur inom skeppsteknik finns listade. § 9. Efter val av ny ordförande vid någon högskola skall övriga medverkande högskolor snarast informeras. Det samma gäller om någon av högskolorna byter namn, adress eller telefonnummer.

Rules and Regulations (in Swedish only) §1. Fysiskt och psykiskt våld får ej förekomma. §2. Det är strängt förbjudet att stjäla personlig egendom. §3. NTHS-fanan får ej stjälas. §4. Övriga regalier får stjälas först efter det att kongressen invigts samt

fram till det att banquetten inleds. §5. Stulna regalier skall återlämnas offentligt under banquetten. §6. Eventuella souvenirer införskaffas med sådan stil och finess att dessa ej kan spåras till en NTHS-delegat, då vi är måna om vårt goda rykte som blivande skeppsbyggare. §7. Stimulerande lösningar av typen C2H5OH skall förvaras samt inmundigas

med den diskreta elegans som endast en skeppsbyggare förvalter över. §8. De företag som besöks skall visas sådan respekt att arrangörerna kan se

dem i ögonen även i fortsättningen. §9. Presidentens direktiv skall respekteras och alla skall följa arrangörernas

planering. §10. Kommunikation under kongressen sker i möjligaste mån på svenska, vilket

är NTHS officiella språk.

«Drukkenbolt» Den NTHS-delegat som under veckan på det mest fascinerande sätt, med jämnt och kontinuerlig flöde lyckas inmundiga den största mängden alkoholhaltig dryck, med bibehållen angenäm och underhållande attityd samt ett rumsrent beteende erhåller den högaktningsvärda titeln Drukkenbolt. Observera dock att pinsamma nybörjarfasoner undanbedes. Denna utmaning bör endast antas av vältränade och erfarna dryckesbröder / systrar.

Presentation of the Faculty of Marine Technology The Faculty is part of The Norwegian University of Science and Technology. It is divided into four departments:

Department of Marine Hydrodynamics The activities are research and education in marine hydrodynamics. The department cooperates closely with the Department of Marine Structures and MARINTEK. The main activities at the department are:

• Wave induced motions and response on marine structures. • Vortex shedding around marine structures. Viscous damping. • Sea keeping and response on high speed vessels. • Hydro elasticity. • Slamming. • Breaking waves. Wave Dynamics. • Stochastic analyses of waves and wave induced response variables • Resistance on ships. • Thrusters and water jets.

Department of Marine Structures The department cooperates closely with The Department of Marine Hydrodynamics, SINTEF and MARINTEK. The department offers different methods of response analysis. The departments branches includes different kinds of ships, oil drilling platforms and pipelines. The department has 5 full time employees, two senior professor jobs, 4 technical administrative jobs and a great number of Post Doctoral Candidates. The main activities at the department are:

• Capacity analysis of steal, aluminium and composite structures. • Response analysis of marine structures. • Reliability and risk analysis. • Fatigue and fracture mechanics. • Fracture limit analysis.

For research and education purposes the department uses advanced laboratories, Marine Structures Laboratories. The Laboratory cooperates with and is used by SINTEF Structure & Concrete.

Department of Marine System Design The department offers research and has many courses in marine system design. The department cooperates closely with MARINTEK. Some of the departments area of work are:

• Ship technology • Shipyard activity • Fishery activity • Underwater technology

Department of Marine Engineering The activities are research and education related on marine machinery systems. The department cooperates closely with MARINTEK. The department branches include machinery systems for ships and other marine installations. Marine machinery systems consists of various part systems for propulsion, electricity generation, steering, stability and ballast, cargo handling, machinery systems on offshore production plants etc. Combustion engines have a central place in marine machinery systems. The main idea of the offered courses and research activities are analysis of systems and processes, aiming at designing, constructing and use of marine machinery systems. This field has great width and covers many disciplines. The lectures are organised in three main fields, as described in the next three paragraphs: Marine Machinery Design and mathematical modelling of machinery systems, model adoption, parameter estimation and sensitivity analysis. It is utilised in marine machinery systems in ships and off-shore installations. Other areas includes simulation of gas turbines, rotor dynamics and mechanical vibrations in compressors, pumps, gas turbines, water jets and gears.

Internal Combustion Engines Analysis of the combustion engine working cycle. Combustion of various types of fuels, including natural gas. Evaluation of fuel quality, fuel economy and pollution. Operational Techniques includes maintenance strategies and maintenance systems, condition monitoring and optimising of operation by utilising maintenance control, control of maintenance, operational disruptions and damage types in marine machinery systems. Other areas are logistics engineering , energy optimising, safety and environment problems. The department utilizes an advanced laboratory for research and education purposes, and cooperates closely with MARINTEK.

The 59th NTHS conference delegates

Norwegian delegation – Mannhullet This year, as every other year, we are ten students from Norway

Erlend Ulstad is 25 years old from Trondheim and Chairman for this year’s NTHS and a participant for his 2nd time. He is completing his 4th year of study in the field of Marine systems. Erlend feels that NTHS is an excellent way to learn more about the naval industry. “NTHS is all about the physical learning of marine technology and the brotherhood of the marine students from the Nordic universities.

Bjarte Ristesund Rudi, is 22 years old and from Bergen. He is completing his third year at the department of Marine Structures and Hydrodynamics, with special emphasis in the offshore industry. Bjarte is planning to study the next two semesters at the University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. He sees NTHS as a great opportunity to combine insight in the business with the creation of friendship ties between Nordic students.

Ole Jørgen is a 23 years old student from Oslo. He is currently studying at the Department of Marine Systems, and wants to combine Logistics methods and Operation Technology. He is a very active student in Mannhullet, the student society of the Ocean-Engineers in Trondheim. He is enjoys sports like sailing, skiing and outdoor life!

Magnus J.F Jordahl is a 24 year old student from Knarvik outside Bergen. He is currently completing his 3rd year, at the Deparment of Marine Systems, and wants to specialize in the field of Operation and maintenance technology. After watching semi-subs and supply vessels cruising by from his livingroom window during his childhood years, it was always quite clear he would study marine technology even though he did not realize it himself.

Lars Martin Thuestad (LaMa), 25, studies at the department of marine design and subsea technology. It´s his forth year of NTHS, and he is a very active student within social activities.

Helene Dehn Hansen, 23 years old and comes from Oslo. She is completing her 4th year at the Department of Marine Systems and her fields of interest are logistics and buildingdesign. NTHS is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience with, and insight to, the shipping industry while meeting many great people at the same time.

Marte Madshus, 26 years old from Oslo. She will complete her third year this summer and follows the courses at the Departement of Marine Structures and Hydrodynamics. She is fascinated of mega offshore structures, and hydrodynamics . She is a member of the student organization Bedriftskontakt

Torkel Ugland, age 22, comes from just outside Trondheim. He is currently studying his 3rd year at the Institute og Marine Technology with emphasis on operation Technology. Torkel is currently the student-body president. By working with a lot of student-social activities (including NTHS), he tries the best to create bond s between the students participating in different grades and fields of study. Additionally he is a coach for a woman basketballteam at NTNUI. Since he now is a part of the Norwegian “NTHS-team”, he sees this as an excellent opportunity to create futher bonds between Nordic students.

Petter Lalic, born and raised in Oslo, started his studies at the faculty of marine technology, and will graduate summer 2006. He has focused on two-stroke disel engine and auxiliary engines.

Gøril Gleditsch, 24, is currently writing her master thesis at the Department of Marine Systems. She is specializing in operational techniques and optimization of marine machinery. “NTHS is a unique way of bond with fellow Nordic students and get insight in the marine business”

Monday 17.th of April

The Norwegian delegation arrived at Arlanda Airport by lunchtime after a nice Easter holiday. The program of the week had been sent to us and it seemed varied and eventful and we were very excited to meet the other delegations. A short taxiride brought us to the first hotel. We met the Swedish host delegation and they gave expression to be impressed by our matching, white blazers with NTHS emblem. The hotel was a charming houseboat, and the size of the cabins very much the same as for 3.rd class on the Titanic. We did not pay much attention to this as the Finnish delegation arrived, like they always do (with a lot of hustle and bustle). After a quick trip to the centre of Stockholm, all the delegations went out for a nice dinner to get to know each other better. The president of this years NTHS congress, Daniel Schwimm, welcomed everyone and the congress was hereby officially started. The night ended at one of Stockholms many nightclubs.

Tuesday 18. april

Tuesday morning at 08.15 we went from our hostel at Söder Mälerstrand, to Rolls Royce in Kristinehamn, where they make waterjets and propellers, with fixed and controllable pitch. In addition to this they do various types of research. After a 3-4 hours bus ride the delegation finally reached their destination. The visit stareted out quit calm, with a hot lunch in the canteen, and then we got a short presentation of the company’s organisation. After the presentation we were divided into two groups. One of the groups stayed for a guided tour at the production plant, while the others went to hydrodynamic research center. Research Center In the search for optimal propulsion efficency, with as less as possible noise and vibration the engineers use advanced theories and calculation models. For one thing they use a numerical flow program, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), where they calculate the flow around the propeller blades, and the forces that acts on the blades. We got an interesting presentation with pictures and animations, to show us how this works.

After this we went to the cavitation lab. The reserach center is equipped with two cavitation tunnels. One of them is a conventional closed tunnel where they test the propellers in free flow. The other tunnel has a free surface, where they test the propellers, in relations with hulls. By doing this they can find out how the propellers acts together with the hull. When we were there, they tested a waterjet.

Production When the visit at the reserach center was over, we went back to the production area. Here they produce Kamewa™ propulsionsystems, which involve both waterjets and propellers, with fixed and controllable pitch. Vi got a guided tour in the production plant, to see how the waterjets and the large propellers were made.

The propeller blades are mainly made by large machines, that can twist and turn, so they can get to all the areas on the propeller. The finish of the propellers were hand made. Each worker then make their own ”signature” on the blades, in terms in different shapes, and from these shapes you can see who made the finish of the propeller blade.

The propeller blades are set up with hollow boss, and if there is controllable pitch this will be controlled by hydraulics. So, after a long and informative day at Rolls Royce, the delegation got on to the bus, to ride back to Stockholm, and Rygerfjord Hostel at Söder Mälarstrand.

Wednesday 20th of April 2006

One of the highlights of the week came on this day. Muskö shipyard is runned by the Swedish navy, and has several kilometers of tunnels dogged out under the mountains. Here you have three dry docks for submarines and larger destroyers. Although the breakfast as usual was a bit early, all delegations were aboard the bus at 09:05, only five minutes too late. The Swedish delegation was quite impressed by this. As we should change “hotel” this day, all luggage had to come with us. As Muskö is a military base, the rules for photography and other Norwegian espionage behavior were explained on the bus. At the base, that was approximately one hour from Stockholm centrum, director Jan Ericsson met us. The group was separated into two, one English speaking, and one Swedish. As we in the Norwegian delegation started to feel a bit Swedish, we of course choose the Swedish group. The two Naval ships, the mine hunter HMS Spårö, and the corvette HMS Gävle were quite impressive. Of ourse HMS Spårö were as 90 % of the Swedish ships made in sandwich. The technical details of the ship impressed every other delegations than our, as we from childhood know that the most technical thing the Swedish has ever built was Vasa (And we know how that went).

“Well there are the three divers, we are three from the machine department, it’s the captain the executive officer and the cock ……Ehhh… the chef ….ehhh sorry about that.” After a good lunch in the canteen, the highlight of the day could start.First we got a presentation of Muskö. One from the Danish delegation was not impressed of the fact that they used 19 yers blowing out rocks to make the docks and tunnels underneath the earth as he said; “Strange, why didn’t the just place the damn docks somewhere else instead?” We got transport through the large gate of Muskö, and underneath the earth by trains built for this purpose. It was quite impressing seeing the size of it all. But it wasn’t until we reached the docks it really chocked people. Seeing a large submarine laying in a dry dock underneath the earth, while a huge number of people worked on it to get it ready for it next trip, sent resembles to a James Bond movie.

A piece of modern Swedish history, and a reminder of the cold war, was also presented to us, as a DC 3 shot down by the Russians in 1952 was shown. The wreck has only recently been fished up of the Baltic Sea, and laid at Muskö waiting for a museum to present it.

We headed back to our next hotel in Stockhom, also this time a houseboat. Were we got changed and went out for dinner and standup at the restaurant SysterOBror, while the NTHS board had the annual leader meeting. Later that night we all meet up at Clarion at Södermalm for cocktails and drinks.

Thursday 20th of April 2006

At eight thirty a sleepy crowd left the Red Boat and headed for Øregrund by bus, two hours later we arrived Anytech Marines’s shipbuilding yard in Øregrund. After a short briefing and introduction to the yard we got a guided tour around the workshops. At lunch, despite snowing and biting wind, we had a bbq with hot dogs, while we at the same time got to see a demonstration of the semi-submersible ship lift system when the yard was launching a finished 1230 CC Rib.

Anytech Marine yard is capable of handling production of vessels up to 50 meters in length. The yard is set up for production of Yacht Hulls for Fagerdala Thiger Marine Sandwich System, but Anytech also build pleasure boats and workboats in steel and aluminium on the yards own design. Anytec Marine’s Sub-lift Division has developed a semi-submersible ship lift system for boats with a weight of up to 200 tons. The Sublift is a patented construction for efficient

launching, lifting and positioning of boats. One person with a remote control easily operates the lift. Yachts and boats can be conveniently moved from the water to cradles. This is driven straight into the water where the boat is docked and then taken up to its intended position. Anytec Marine AB has today 50 employees within sheet metal and welding, electrics, carpentry, hydraulics, sand blasting, painting and diesel engines. The yard also carries out assignments in GRP and other composites. The yard also has considerable knowledge about water jet propulsion. After lunch it was time for return to Stockholm, back at the Red Boat we had a short break in the program to dress for dinner, before our designated bus driver took us to Det Norske Veritas Stockholm.

DNV held a few presentations for us, a short introduction to the DNV Corporation and DNV Stockholm, a lecture about classification of pleasure crafts and a picture presentation of DNV’s survey activities around the world. Following the presentations we were served a delicious dinner and cakes.

After the dinner we went to an Irish pub, Patrick’s, fraternizing and laying the plan of action for the next and last day of NTHS 2006.

Friday 21th of April 2006

The United Spirit We had a rather “late” wakeup this morning, at 07:45. And after a quick shower and a even quicker breakfast we were all on the bus heading for The United Spirit.

The United Spirit is a 110 feet Yacht that was originally built in the 1930’s in aluminum. After a history of misfortune the boat sunk, was sold and placed on land. The new owner had the yacht lengthened 4 meter in the aft. Later the yacht was coated with a divinycell core, and glass fiber as an outer layer. This made the old hull look as good as new and gave a complete new finish to the boat. The method used to attach the divinycell to the aluminum hull was a special rubber glue, that dried under a vacuum environment.

The Vasa Museum Then the bus left for the Vasa Museum, where we heard about the famous vasa ship and her lack of stability. The whole ship, or what was left of her, was on display in the huge museum building. An info film told us that the restoration and preservation of the ship had taken 30 years. We also pondered the question of why she capsized. And realized the fact that the ballast tanks (witch was filled with round stones), wasn’t completely full. So as she started to heel, the stones rolled over to the heeling side which probably is the reason for the capsizing, combined with the high center of gravity.

KTH After a short presentation of FMV we were transferred to KTH where we had lunsj. Every one was quite tired at this point, form a long and hard week of presentations and bus rides. So we took some free time on the KTH campus for relaxation.

The final presentation this day was of Lutab. A company founded by one of the professors at KTH. From our point of view the only reason that this presentation was in the program was that the students from KTH was in the professor’s class. After one hour of trying to convince us that airplane design was exactly the same as ship design he gave up and we went back to the hotel boat to prepare for the banquet.

The Banquet

At 18:00 hours we were all ready to celebrate a great congress and have some final discussions of the Swedish naval industry.

We also got to present the Norwegian gift to the host nation. This year’s mechanical wonder was design by Ole Jørgen but took some severe beating during transport, so some improvisation with “ducktape” prevented total disaster.

Departure day After one week with a lot of exciting visits at different companies the last day of the 59.th NTHS congress had come. The Banquet the night before was a great success and it was a sad atmosphere when all the delegations said goodbye to each other and we went to Arlanda Airport. After a very eventful week we brought back a lot of memories.

Chairman of the 60th NTHS congress

The Norwegian delegation was very satisfied with this year’s congress and again we would like to thank the Swedish delegation from KTH for a very interesting programme. Already at the airport the same day we started thinking about NTHS next year, the 60.th anniversary. We look forward to arranging the NTHS in Norway next year and we will keep in touch for further cooperation. We invite you to give us ideas and suggestions, we believe that input from interested companys will be of great importance(value?) for us to be able to create a great program for the anniversary. NTHS is a congress with long traditions which we will continue the 9.th – 13.th of April 2007 in Norway, where it started in 1947. We are looking forward to work with you next year.
