C ity planners in Fremont, Calif.,

rejected early designs for this

Shell gasoline station and con-

venience store, citing its importance as a

“gateway” to the new adjacent office complex.

Specifically, the planners objected to the gas

canopy at the front of the project. The design team

responded with a higher level of design. Using

Locally crafted native art is displayed

in a museum-like setting at Gifts

of the Raven. The 775-sq.-ft. shop

takes advantage of a prime location at

Vancouver International Airport without in-

terfering with the sight lines of the terminal.

An elliptical structure with minimal vertical

support makes the overall shell of the store

almost transparent. The carefully placed ver-

tical supports create totem-pole-styled col-

umns to display merchandise. Fir, cedar and

other indigenous woods were used for the

structure finish and display units, providing a

neutral backdrop for the colorful native art. ■

bold forms and bright colors, they turned the typ-

ically utilitarian canopy into a sculptural element.

The same bold design was carried over to the con-

venience store facade. ■
