If you have any suggestions or ideas on how we can better serve our members, Temple Pres ident, Mark Greenf ield would like to hear from you. He can be reached at (818)749-2839 or you can call Temple off ice at (818) 843-4787.

Dear friends and fellow temple members, We have just had the privilege of celebrating Pesach, an opportunity to gather with family and friends. On that night, once again we told how Moses led our people out of oppression and into freedom. Yet underly-ing this adventure story is a valuable concept about another type of freedom, the freedom to do what is right, regardless of the consequences, and not be held down by greed, pettiness, or selfishness. Pesach is a time for us, as individuals, to re-dedicate ourselves to the ethics that make us who we are. If more of the Exodus were to be told in the Seder, we would recall how Moses surely reached the “peak” of his career when he received the Ten Commandments on Mt. Sinai and how disappointed he must have been when he descended and found his people worshipping a golden calf. I have al-ways suspected there is a reason for these two points to hap-pen so close together in both time and geography. It’s a les-son to remind us that it is easier to fall back on self-serving habits and tangible rewards than to accept a code of ethical behavior based on faith but promising no earthly compensa-tion. And like the people awaiting Moses’ return, every day we are offered the same two choices: the easy path of doing what we want regardless of its affect on others or the whole community, and the more difficult path of doing right for its own sake, regardless of our personal desires or gains.

and our diligent observation of their conditions. We did not do that during the Vietnam War, but w e need to do that now . Even if w e don’t agree w ith our gov-ernment’s handling of wars and warfare, the soldier, sailor, airperson or marine w ho serves our country is obeying the law and carrying out his or her duty as he/she seems fit. As we know , emotional and spiri-tual death can be as complete and as devastating as physical death. We can do no less in our perform-ance of our religious duty to “choose life, not death” (Deuteronomy 30:19), than to serve our living veter-ans.

As Memorial Day approaches, let us promise to remember to do the follow ing for our veterans, living and dead: Visit the graves of our fallen heroes; re-cite the Kaddish or place a f lag there or just say, “Thank you for your sacrif ice”. And, when those ac-tions of the heart are done, telephone, text message or say to a living veteran, “Thank you for w hat you have done for our country” and when that is done, do a Tzadakah activity for veterans, whether it is creating hats for those w ith cancer or contributing to veterans’ support funds or just going and sitt ing w ith a service person and talking. Share w ith them w hy you love OUR country. It w ill make your t ime w ith them and their time w ith you MEMOR(ial)ABLE. L’zkor B’ahava, Rabbi Mark

Mitzvah of bikkur holim We would like to know if you are ill, in the hospital (or being treated at home), not as an exercise in gossip, but as an opportunity for bikkur holim, to extend a helping hand or a word of encouragement to the sick person. Yet it is quite possible you are not yet ready to share the private fact of being sick with us. We are ready, whenever, you are ready. Bonnie Friedman and Lucy Rafaeli have been in the hospital. We wish them a speedy return to good health.

Remember the sick with cards, calls and visits.

Pursuant to the by-laws of Temple Beth Emet, notice is hereby given that the an-nual meeting of the membership of Temple Beth Emet will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. at the Temple. The purpose of this meeting is the election of the officers and directors for the term July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010, and such other and further business as may be presented.

Here at Temple Beth Emet things just keep getting better and better. On April 11th we held our Temple Beth Emet Community Seder and it was an eve-ning to remember. Rabbi Mark made the story of the Exodus come alive with his teachings, there was an all-around warm family-like atmosphere and a complete de-licious dinner was served. What an excep-tional, memorable evening it was for our community. A huge thank you to Barry Verdi and all who helped put this Seder on for us.

Happy 90th birthday Leon Blacher

Lois Jones thanks everyone for their visits, calls & cards while in the hospital.

As of last month’s meeting w e have taken names as listed for nominations. We look forward to

every sisterhood member in good standing to at-tend, place their vote and share their ideas.

NOMINATED SLATE OF OFFICERS FOR

2009-2010 The follow ing have been nominated for Sister-hood Officers of Temple Beth Emet for the term June 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010. For President: Lisa De Luca For Vice President: Leona Zollman For Secretary: Natalie Greenfield For Treasurer: Jodi Gross Election of Off icers w ill take place at the next membership meeting on May 3, 2009 at 10:00am at the Temple. Nominations w ill be taken from the f loor, but the nominee must consent to serve, ei-ther in person or by telephone.

I have become very aware of these ethical choices. Recently, someone informed me that one or some members of the congre-gation refuse to support our temple as long as a particular individual with whom they disagree is also a part of this community. As I understand it, our ethics call for us to treat each person fairly and to help our community whether or not we agree with everyone in it. Therefore, this individual or individuals is, in essence, like the child who threatens to hold her breath until she gets her way. It is much harder for some-one to look past differences in opinion and behave in an ethical way. To choose the self-centered path and allow personal prejudices to overshadow the good of the whole is a type of attitude I find not only blatantly selfish, but also divisive to the community. We must not forget that our people have survived through centuries of oppression by putting aside petty differ-ences for the sake of the community. As a leader, I will always try to make deci-sions based on what is ethical rather than be swayed by what is most popular. Pesach reminds us: we accepted the Ten Commandments (not the Ten Sugges-tions) and we define ourselves as a people who have chosen to live ethically! Shalom, Mark Greenfield, President, Temple Beth Emet

Edward G. Robinson. Oscar-w inning tough guy actor. Born Emanuel Goldenberg on December 12, 1893 in Bucharest, Romania, Robinson came to the United States as a child. In July 1918, armed w ith a letter of introduction from George M. Cohan, Robinson enlisted in the U.S. Navy w ith the hope of w orking for naval intelligence. After seamanship training at Pelham Bay, Robinson spent his time in traditional military pur-suits like KP and “shovel details.” He turned dow n opportunities to join entertainment units because he w anted to make a signif icant contribution to the war effort. He still hoped for a transfer to naval in-telligence. Robinson's transfer to intelligence came through shortly before the war ended on November 11, 1918. With the w ar over, he hoped to be sw iftly demobilized but w as to be disappointed. Miserable with the boredom of the peacetime navy, Robinson accepted invitations to entertain troops at camps and hospitals. It w as his experiences in the burn and casualty w ards that gave Robinson his real introduction to w ar. “What I saw made me hate w ar with every f iber of my being,” he recalled. He w as discharged from the navy in 1919.

Italian Jews Aid World War II Saviors Hit By Quake

More than 64 years after villagers provided shel-ter to Italian Jews fleeing from the Nazis, a group of those who evaded capture rushed to repay that sacrifice in rural communities hard-hit by an earthquake. A delegation of around 20 elderly Jews and their descendants – as well as community leaders – made their way to makeshift camps in the area around the mountain city of L’Aquila on Monday, peering into tents in a bid to find their saviors. “I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for these people,” said Alberto Di Consiglio, whose parents were sheltered in the small hamlets of Fossa and Casentino during the war. “We have to help them.” More than 100 tent cities have been built around L’Aquila and the 26 towns and villages affected by the 6.3 magnitude quake, which struck cen-tral Italy on April 6. Like most ma-jor stars, he did his bit for war bonds, starring in Any Bonds Today?, made in a record three weeks and released on December 15, a week after Pearl Harbor. It w as during WWII that Bugs Bunny cartoons passed Disney in popularity for the f irst time, as GI’s could identify w ith the rabbit with a Brooklyn accent. Bugs adorned bombers and PT boats, served as a mascot for the 385th Air Service Squadron and the 5th Parachute Battalion as well as the hospital ship USS Comfort.
