ASSOCIATE DEGREE IN NURSING Registered Nurses (RNs) provide direct patient care which includes: • Formulating nursing care plans which ensures that nursing care provides for client safety, comfort, hygiene, and for disease prevention and restoration measures. • Delegating tasks for care of the client based on the legal scope of practice of the LVN, and CNA. • Instructing patients and their families in proper care. • Serving as the Client’s advocate • Evaluating the effectiveness of care given and modifying plans according to the needs of the client. An RN working in San Bernardino County is expected to earn up to $32/hour to start. There are several ways to become a Registered Nurse. The career ladder offers the individual with the opportunity to gain experience and to work while pursuing a degree. • An LVN may work in the field and continue with educational opportunities at Chaffey College by completing ADN3 and then the last 2 semesters of the nursing program and general education course for an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN). • A CNA may elect to enter the ADN program directly by completing the required prerequisites for enrollment. • A student without any previous nursing experience may enter the program upon completion of program prerequisites. RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY

The Radiologic Technology Program is a respect-ed, well known x-ray program that is two yearsin length (including both summers). It is accreditedby the Joint Review Commission on Education inRadiologic Technology and by the State ofCalifornia. This full-time day program provides lec-ture classes with concurrent hands-on training in hos-pitals.

Students must earn an Associate degree (with the major inradiography) in order to graduate from the program to become board eligible.Graduates are eligible to take the national registry (ARRT) and the StateFluoroscopy permit examinations. Upon passing both examinations, gradu-ates are fully licensed to perform fluoroscopy, digital, and film-screen radiog-raphy. Graduates are able to find employment within 6 months of graduationwith salaries ranging from $25 to $30 per hour depending on location andshift.

The program accepts a limited number of students each year during themonth of February. Prospective students are encouraged to see a counselorearly to determine eligibility. For more information visitwww.chaffey.edu/radtec.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN

The Pharmacy Technician Program offersthe opportunity to join one of the fastestgrowing health careers. This program offerseither a certificate or Associate of ScienceDegree in Pharmacy Technology.

Students take courses which assist with the developmentof strong technical skills that are necessary in hospital, community, andambulatory settings. The technical training is focused on IV additive prepa-ration, data entry skills, pharmacy profile skills, medication dosage calcula-tions, home health care and long term care order processing, communitypharmacy operations, and patient services.

Because of the shortage of pharmacy technicians, there are great job opportu-nities for the future. The salary range, depending on education, experienceand type of facility, varies from $22,000 to $38,000 a year. For more informa-tion, please visit www.chaffey.edu/healthscience.

REGISTERED DENTAL ASSISTING

The Dental Assisting Program is accredited bythe Commission on Dental Accreditation. Theprogram is designed to prepare students for theDental Assisting National Board Examination forNational Certification as well as the RegisteredDental Assistant Examination for State license. Thisone year program begins each semester. Students mayparticipate in the part-time program, which generallytakes two years. An Associate of Science degree can beacquired by taking additional required courses.

Students are able to earn the California State Radiation Safety Certification andCoronal Polishing Certificate, which are both required in order to take State LicensingExamination.

Chaffey RDA graduates can work in dental offices, clinics and hospitals, or choose totransfer to become a dentist or dental hygienist. For further information please call(909) 652-6680.

GERONTOLOGY

Gerontology prepares students for careersworking with older people. This is an inter-

disciplinary field, incorporating research on agingin psychology, physiology, and sociology as wellas public policy and social ethics.

Gerontology courses provide short-term occupationtraining for immediate employment. A Community

Caregiver Certificate, a Certificate in Gerontology, or anAssociate of Science degree in Gerontology are offered.

Nurses, social workers, and administrators of care facilities may earn ContinuingEducation units.

Gerontology career opportunities are increasing in both direct and indirect service toolder people. Gerontologists work in professions such as medicine, law, architecture,mental health, and social work. Transfer students will find Gerontology courses atmore than 15 California universities. CERTIFIED NURSINGASSISTANT/ HOME HEALTH AIDE

ANursing Assistant (NA) assists nursing servicepersonnel with a variety of patient care activities

and related nonprofessional services necessary in caring forthe personal needs and comfort of geriatric patients primarily in

long-term care settings. A Nursing Assistant working in San Bernardino County isexpected to earn $11 - $13 per hour.

To start the NA program: You need to be at least 18 years of age, complete an applica-tion to the California Department of Health Services which includes a criminal back-ground screening. You do not need a high school diploma or GED.

Home Health Aides (HHA) provide patients with personalcare in the home environment. They help elderly, convales-cent, or disabled persons live in their own homes insteadof in a healthcare facility. Under the direction of nursingor medical staff, they provide health-related services,such checking pulse, temperature, and respiration; helpwith simple prescribed exercises and help patients movefrom bed, bathe, dress, groom, and assist with providingoral medications. (The HHA program is optional, not requiredto move up the career ladder in nursing).

A HHA working in San Bernardino County is expected to earn $13- $15 per hour.To start the HHA program you need to be a Certified Nursing Assistant and apply tothe California Department of Health Services for the Home Health Aide Certificate.Visit www.chaffey.edu/healthscience for more information.

VOCATIONAL NURSE

Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) providebasic bedside nursing care to clients underthe direction of a physician or registerednurse. The LVN utilizes scientific and techni-cal expertise and manual skills. Duties typical-ly include, but are not limited to, provision of

basic hygienic and nursing care; measurement ofvital signs; basic client assessment; documentation,

performance of prescribed medical treatment; administration of pre-scribed medications; and, performance of non-medicated intravenoustherapy and blood withdrawal (requires separate Board certification).

Course content for the VN program includes: anatomy & physiology,nursing process, nutrition, maternity nursing,medical/surgical nursing, leadership/supervision,psychology, communication, normal growth &development, nursing fundamentals, gerontolog-ical nursing, communicable disease, pharmacol-ogy, patient education, rehabilitation nursing,pediatric nursing. An LVN working in SanBernardino County is expected to earn approx-imately $18 - $20/hour.
