We will be receiving a written report which will be used to confirm with the insurers that the roof is intact. The Committee will be discussing at their next meeting the outcome of the report to prepare for future problems and fund raising.

The unmistakable boyish good looks of Jim Wilson, handing out samples to the hopeful entrants...

...and the winner is... David Jennings!

Defending Champion, Shane McAlistair maintained a confident poise, perched on a bar stool for the entire evening. Little did he know at the time that he would not even make the top 5 this year!

Jim Wilson did a splendid job of distributing each anonymous sample for each entrant to score based on clarity, smoothness, warming, and overall taste. After all the samples had been tasted, scored and tallied up, the victorious winner was David Jennings - congratulations David!

Rev'd Miri Keen writes …

Benefice. For the last three and a half years I’ve been based in St George’s Church, Preshute, on the western side of Marlborough. I’ve loved working with church members to develop a week day service for young children and their parents and carers, collaborating with the local primary school to provide a Community Lunch, and supporting older neighbours through illness and bereavement as well as leading Sunday services across the Marlborough Anglican Team churches. I’ve been both a primary and secondary school governor and have been part of a team providing foundation level Safeguarding Training for churches in the Marlborough Deanery. But today all of that has stopped. I have taken my final service at St George’s, enjoyed a farewell wellie walk with parishioners, and said my good-byes during a wonderful afternoon tea in the church. The next fixed point in my diary is Moving Day! In the meantime there will be all the unsettling busyness of a house move: deciding what to keep, what to recycle and what to dump; moving things from one place to another in the hope that they’ll be easier to find later; negotiating with grown up children about their stuff, and arranging for utilities, and all the

comfortable, to be working in good time. I’m very much looking forward to getting to know each of the communities of West Downland and Dave, my husband, and I feel blessed, but sometimes I am nervous because there’s so much uncertainty at the moment.

perspective of one of my favourite Bible verses

Managing change is a demanding business and stress levels are running high so I’m thanking God for painting. Not the artistic sort but rather the emulsion and rollers and ‘no brush strokes in the gloss’ kind that frees my mind to reflect on where God fits into all this. Working on the Rectory kitchen will enable me to look back to my last Christmas in Preshute and to look forward to my first Easter with you from the

‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever’.

Jesus’ heart of love doesn’t change and so we can rely on him to stand by us whatever our circumstances, and to transform our situations so that we can find hope. Sometimes we don’t notice that this is happening till we look back and remember that we prayed and God graciously answered. So a few days with paint and brushes will give me space to thank God that he has answered my prayers in the past, is watching over my family and me now in all the chaos of moving house, and will continue to do so in the future as we find our place in the communities of West Downland. I hope that in the coming months I shall be able to get to know many of you well. But for now I can only guess that I am not the only one who is trying to manage major changes in their life, or who is feeling uncertain, or nervous or stressed about the future. Even when life is going well we need to feel that we are on stable foundations and that the busyness of twenty-first century life isn’t running away with us. If you’re feeling any of these things perhaps some decorating, or time thinking over this Bible verse, could be a blessing to you too?

Guinea Pig Village will have a beach theme and one of our volunteers has already built a promenade, beach hut houses, a bandstand and a pub amongst other things, while Rabbit World will have an educational area where we can do talks to groups and school children. In February we are also hoping to see the opening of our new converted barn where we will be selling donated items from the public, there will also be the ability to get refreshments which will help raise more money for our animals.

We were all shocked by the decision to allow a Knackers Yard to be sited at the Great Shefford Saw Mill site. We fought this vehemently and it was twice rejected by WBC. We will undoubtedly be affected by the smells during the summer months due to the prevailing wind.

WBC have also rejected our request to have Main Street (outside The Ibex) resurfaced.

We have been coerced into looking after the salt bins and providing the salt. As you will see we have replaced the bin at the bottom of Norris Field and introduced a new bin in Nodmore.

With the bus service being cut, the library no longer visiting we all wonder what we get for our Council Tax?

a Christmas cake all prepared and baked by our members. The children from the Primary School came to sing to us and also to play a violin and trumpet for us. This was very enjoyable and I hope the children enjoyed the experience as much as we did.

As a special treat Tracy the donkey came all the way from the River Island Donkey Sanctuary to see the children and enjoyed their pats and kisses. Tracy then walked back to the School with the children and had a good look round inside The Ibex before going home in her horse box. We finished the afternoon with more tea, a grand raffle, secret Santa and a good chat. This was a great way to spend a gloomy December afternoon and to start Christmas.

The Afternoon Club will now be taking a break with no further meetings planned until we find someone or a small group who can take over the running of the Club and organising the meetings. Thank you very much to everyone who has supported us and come to the meetings over the last 10 years. If anyone is interested in taking the Club forward please do contact myself or Christine for more information.

Graham-Campbell with her lucky number 52 (Dec), Iain Lochhead with his lucky number 25 and Anne Egerton with her lucky number 18 (Jan), they all win £31.

I am always trying to get more Members so we can support YOUR Village Hall with the fund to replace people who have left the village. The 100 Club has recently paid for a fire check, including a new fire extinguisher that came to £248.62 so as can be seen the Village hall needs constant upkeep!

I would like many more people to join so that OUR Village Hall continues. If you do nothing else in the Village please support this. It costs £24 per year and as you can see by the above you stand a 62/1 chance of winning £31 which is way beyond the 'paltry' £25 Premium Bond win for which you have to deposit at least £100.
