Activity 13.1

Isomerism, naming and drawing structures

Apparatus (for each group of students)

•  ballandstick components as follows: 5 carbon atoms (preferably black) 12 hydrogen atoms (preferably white) 12 short single bonds for C–H bonds 5 medium bonds for C–C bonds 2 longer bonds for forming one C=C bond

•  three overhead transparency sheets plus appropriate pen •  access to an overhead projector

Procedure

You are given three assignments. For each one, allow approximately 10 minutes.

1  a  Construct models representing all the alkanes with the formula C5H12.  [3] b  Write/draw the structural and skeletal formulae for each compound.

Record your results on an overhead transparency sheet.  [6]

2  a  Construct models representing all the alkenes with the formula C5H10.  [6] b  Write/draw the structural and skeletal formulae for each compound.

Record your results on an overhead transparency sheet.  [12]

3  a  Construct models representing all the compounds with the formula C5H10 that have a cyclic component.  [5]

b  Draw the skeletal formula for each compound. Record your results on an overhead transparency sheet.  [5]
