GLOSSARY We aim for the text to be as plain as possible, with everyday words which explain themselves.
Having said that, we have a range of quite abstract concepts, and finding the right word isn’t always
easy. So in case of any doubt, here is a list of the key words used in this text.
1.0 model Linear, fixed, mono-functional system: mechanical image: ‘clever’
2.0 model Evolutionary, entrepreneurial system: biological image: ‘smart’
3.0 model Co-evolutionary, cognitive-creative-collaborative system: human image: ‘wise’
Actors People, organizations, communities, networks etc: which are most involved in the relevant system or issue
Co-evolutionary (3.0) a.k.a. ‘3.0’ model: system change with 3C qualities: cognitive, creative, collaborative
Co-learning
Co-gnostics
Co-innovation
Co-production
Complexity Recursive / emergent structure: 1.0 level is complicated: 2.0 level is complex: 3.0 level is ‘deep’ or ‘post’ or ‘cognitive complexity’
Domain System of values, thinking, knowledge: e.g. economic, social
Emergence Qualitative change in a system: evolutionary or co-evolutionary
Evolutionary (2.0) a.k.a. ‘2.0’ model: system change which is entrepreneurial: biological image: ‘smart’
Factors Components of the system: institutions, structures etc, which are most significant for the relevant system or issue (aka ‘actants’)
Intelligence Capacity for ‘learning, thinking, creating, mobilizing’: can be social, technical, entrepreneurial, ecological, political etc.
Learning Process of cognitive development in a system
Linear (1.0) a.k.a ‘1.0’ model: system which is fixed, mono-functional: mechanical image: ‘clever’
Model A coherent set of concepts combined with applications: e.g. ‘economic model’
Pathway A set of actions and opportunities, linking a complex present to an uncertain future: more generalized than a ‘road-map’
Relationality Internal structure / ‘relations’ between actors / factors in a system
‘R&I’ or ‘research and innovation’
‘R&D’ (research and development), ‘RTD’ (research and technology development’ or ‘S.T.I’ (science, technology, innovation).
Shared-mind A system with synergistic intelligence and ‘3C’ (cognitive-creative-collaborative) qualities for ‘learning, thinking, creating, mobilizing’.
3
Urban 3.0 CH.12 - ANNEX V0.6C – 16-07-16
Social / shared intelligence a.k.a. shared-mind
Synergy Positive relation / exchange between two or more actors / factors
Synergistic mapping Methods for visualizing / analysing synergistic systems: works in ‘4S’ cycle: ‘Systems / Scenario / Synergy / Strategy’ mapping
Synergistic System or quality which results from a co-evolutionary process: can be defined as 3C (cognitive-creative-collaborative)
Synergistics The science of synergistic systems.
System A set of inter-dependent components where the whole is different / greater than the parts: can be human, tangible, or intangible.
System thinking A broad field of studies and methods for understanding & working with systems, covering many disciplines & professions
Value model: loop: constellation
a.k.a. domain
Vector a.k.a. ‘domain’
