Dear Publishers and Friends,

when will this pandemic finally be history? This question surely is as much on your minds as on ours.

How did mankind survive pandemics in history? That’s a question we have some answers for.

In his new book The Power of Epidemic, Volker Reinhardt reviews how the Great Plague from 1347 to

1353 changed the World. In Milan, the ruler Luchino Visconti had the city completely isolated, when the

plague loomed. Sick people were walled in. Thus, Milan became the only city in Italy to be spared.

Volker Reinhardt shows how the supposed European conflagration was a sum of local dramas, which

people coped with in very different ways: through political upheavals, persecution of minorities,

restoration of old conditions or even praise of the tyrannis, as in Milan.

An already evident fact is that the pandemic has propelled us much further into the digital age, with its negative side effects. Completely new forms of corporate power have emerged, as the internationally renowned thinker Joseph Vogl reconstructs in his brilliant analysis of Capital and Resentment. The fusion of the financial economy with modern communication technologies establishes a new

platform capitalism, at the expense of democracy and the common good.

Joseph Vogl is Professor of Literary and Cultural Studies at the University of Berlin and Permanent

Visiting Professor at Princeton University.

Just after the last large pandemic, 100 years ago, Joseph Beuys was born, an artist of world fame who

has been discredited as a “charlatan” while shaping and polarising contemporary art like hardly anyone

else. In his groundbreaking biography, Philipp Ursprung impressively succeeds in locating Beuys' works

in the social, economic and political context of his times.

In Damned and Destroyed, the internationally renowned archaeologist and prehistorian Hermann

Parzinger gives a vivid account of cultural destruction from the Ancient Orient to the Present Day,

showing that the deliberate devastation and plundering of cultural assetshas always been mainly an

expression of a new claim to power.

In new fiction, bestselling author Hans Pleschinski with his new novel introduces us to Paul

Heyse, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1910, and contemporary Germany at the

same time. He combines a sharp-tonguedly and comical story based on Heyse's life and work,

his fame and transience in a deteriorating world, with a close look at the present.

Little Freedom is the title of the debut novel in our spring list, and we’re happy to report that it

has already received great reviews. With a touching father-daughter story, Nicola Kabelputs

her finger in both emotional and political wounds inflicted by the past and present.

Reading Jochen Schmidt is always pure pleasure – his new book is called I remember when

King Kong died and our favourite part is where he, the GDR child, idealises in his typically funny

way a “Western childhood”.

Finally, great news from our backlist: Jonas Lüscher’s novel Kraft was just published in the US

by FSG, with praise from the Washington Post and The New York Times, amongst others.

Joseph Vogl Capital and Resentment A brief Theory of Present There is a trail of destruction from the rule of the financial markets and the new network giants to the dynamised opinion forming industry. Democracy, freedom and social responsibility are left behind. In his brilliant analysis, Joseph Vogl reconstructs how completely new forms of corporate power have emerged in the digital age, overwriting our familiar political universe with their own evaluation logic and intervening ever more massively in the decision-making processes of governments, societies and economies across national borders. Joselph Vogl, one of the foremost spokesmen of a new generation of critics of

capitalism and since his bestseller "The Spectre of Capital" one of the most

acclaimed economists presents here three theses on the current age. First, the internet and platform

capitalism of the present (from Google to Uber) is the latest metamorphosis of a financial regime that

developed in the 1970s and recognised the management of information as an attractive source of value

creation. Second, this fusion of financial economy and communication technologies establishes new

paradigms of power, the result of which are fragmented public eras, social schisms and loss of

democracy. Third, affect economies fuelled by resentment stabilise the dominance of this new platform

capitalism at the expense of the common good.

Joseph Vogl is Professor of Modern German Literature, Literary and Cultural Studies/Media at the

University of Berlin and visiting Professor at Princeton University. His last book, "The Sovereignty Effect",

was nominated for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize in the non-fiction/essay category in 2015.

Volker Reinhardt The Power of the Epidemic How the Great Plague changed the World 1347-1353 The Great Plague of 1348 was one of the most drastic events in European history. Volker Reinhardt reconstructs the course of the epidemic from its beginnings in Asia to its temporary extinction in Europe and sheds light on the different conditions in selected cities. When the plague approached in spring 1348, the Milanese ruler Luchino Visconti had the city completely isolated. Sick people were walled in as a precaution. Milan was thus the only city in Italy to be spared. Volker Reinhardt has reviewed all the sources on the Great Plague. He shows how the supposed European conflagration was a sum of local dramas which people coped with in very different ways: through political upheavals,

persecution of minorities, restoration of old conditions or even praise of the tyrannis à la Milan. Volker Reinhardt is Professor of History at the University of Fribourg and is one of the leading international historians of Italy. His previous book "Die Macht der Schönheit. Kulturgeschichte Italiens" (2020) published by C.H. Beck has been a bestseller. He has received a lot of cultural prizes. Philip Ursprung Joseph Beuys Art-Capital-Revolution Joseph Beuys (1921-1986), on the one hand celebrated as an artist of world fame and on the other hand discredited as a "charlatan", shaped and polarised contemporary art like hardly anyone else. But what role does the man from Kleve, who has become the epitome of contemporary art, play today? For the 100th birthday of Joseph Beuys, the author embarks on a journey to 24 central works by this productive and quick-witted artist. Beuys went down in art history with catchy slogans such as "Everyone is an artist", "expanded concept of art" or "social sculpture". and intervened in current events as a notorious "frequent speaker" with a claim to improve

the world. With his art he wanted to change society: Art meant politics and politics meant art to him. Philip Ursprung impressively succeeds in locating Beuys' works in the social, economic and political context of the Federal Republic of Germany. This new contribution to Beuys allows a better understanding of his decisive actions and projects such as "I like America and America likes me", "How to explain pictures to the dead hare" or "7000 oaks". Bénédicte Savoy Africa's struggle for its Art History of a post-colonial Defeat 50 years ago, Africa has been fighting for its art, which very often had ended up in European museums during the colonial period. In the end the struggle supported by the West was not only in vain but was even successfully forgotten. Drawing on countless unknown sources from Europe and Africa, Bénédicte Savoy tells the exciting, ghostly story of a missed opportunity, a defeat that is hitting us all the harder today. The dynamic has been set in motion by African intellectuals, politicians as well as museum employees immediately after 1960, when 18 former colonies became independent. All over Europe, politicians, journalists, academics and some museum staff tried to find a way to give back African cultural assets in the sense of post-colonial and post-racist solidarity.

In the end. Bénédicte Savoy follows the post-colonial awakening and its suffocation, and asks which actors, structures and ideologies ensured that the project of an orderly and fair return of cultural assets failed. Bénédicte Savoy is professor of art history at Berlin University and the Collège de France in Paris. In 2016 she received the Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation. Her research field includes art theft and looted art and she is one of the most prominent voices in the debate on the return of looted cultural assets in Western collections. Hermann Parzinger Damned and Destroyed Cultural Destruction from the Ancient Orient to the Present Day In 2015, the global public looked at Palmyra in disbelief - the ancient ruined city had fallen into the hands of the terrorist organization IS. The ancient temple of Baal, the sacred center of countless cultures, was blown up. But cultural destruction is not an invention of the 21st century. Such events can be found repeatedly over the last millennia. Hermann Parzinger tells the story of destroyed cultural treasures and makes a brilliant plea for the protection of human heritage and artistic freedom in our days. The deliberate destruction of culture can be found in almost all epochs from the ancient times until today. From the Roman destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. to the iconoclasm of the Reformation and

the French Revolution to the devastation of European colonialism and the rupture of civilisation under National Socialism. The deliberate devastation and plundering of cultural assets have always been mainly an expression of a new claim to power. Iconoclasms were driven by solid financial interests besides political, ideological and religious reasons. Robbery and expropriation often proved to be systematic redistributions of wealth. Hermann Parzinger gives a well-founded and vivid account of the different historical backgrounds and dynamics of cultural destruction. Hermann Parzinger is President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and was one of the three founding directors of the Humboldt Forum in the Berlin Palace. As an internationally renowned archaeologist and prehistorian, he has received numerous honours and awards. C.H. Beck recently published his bestsellers "Die Kinder des Prometheus. Eine Geschichte der Menschheit vor der Erfindung der Schrift" (2016) and "Abenteuer Archäologie. A Journey through Human History" (2018). Matthias Nass Dragon Dance China's Rise to world Power and what this means for us China's rise fascinates the world – and inspires fear. Under party leader Xi Jinping, the country experiences a relapse into dictatorship. At the same time, it continues to expand its global influence. Not only in America, but also in Europe there is growing uneasiness about the new world power and its methods. Is there a threat of a new Cold War or even a Chinese triumph over the West? Matthias Nass gives an exciting insight into the country becoming the leading power of the 21st century. Beijing's rulers are perfecting the surveillance of their people and establishing a system of rewards and punishment. Minorities like the Uighurs are brutally persecuted and "re-educated" in camps. In Hong Kong, the opposition is to be silenced, while China's military presence in

the South China Sea is being steadily expanded. With the large project of establishing the "New Silk Road", China is creating new dependencies in the Middle East, Africa and Europe. But there are also problems. There is reason to believe that China will not be able to sustain it’s expansion course in the long run, neither economically nor politically. There are also massive environmental problems. And the Corona crisis has releaved to many Western countries that their dependency on China has reached a critical level. Matthias Nass, an excellent expert on China, draws a captivating account. Matthias Nass is the international correspondent of the weekly newspaper "Die ZEIT". Gerd Krumeich Joan of Arc Seer, Saint, Warrior A Biography Joan of Arc is one of the most exciting personalities of the Middle Ages. A young girl of peasant origin has visions and suddenly finds herself at the head of an army, defeating Englishmen and Burgundians she also leads the Dauphin to the royal anointing in Reims. But shortly afterwards she is captured and after a show trial Joan of Arc is burned at the age of 19. Krumeich’s decades of research on the Virgin of Orleans culminate in this masterful biography. He shows how a pre-modern personality asserts herself against powerful institutions such as the church and insists on an individual relationship to God. The book impressively traces the different stages of her

extraordinary life. Krumeich refutes convincingly the suspicion that Joan of Arc would have been in reality a man. Gerd Krumeich is Professor emeritus of Modern History at the University of Düsseldorf. He has written his habilitation thesis on Joan of Arc. C.H. Beck has published the volume "Jeanne d'Arc" (2012) in the series C.H. Beck Wissen as well as the volume "101 Fragen: Erster Weltkrieg" (2015). Thomas Alexander Szlezák Plato Master Philosopher of Antiquity Plato is one of the most important philosophers in history. This work offers a comprehensive and fundamental introduction to his life, work and thought. Anyone curious to know more about Plato's philosophy and his path to the true, the beautiful and the good is strongly recommended to read this book. In this masterpiece, Thomas Alexander Szlezák, one of the world's most renowned Plato experts, brings us closer to Plato, not only as a philosopher but also as a human being. Plato was strongly influenced by the trial against his teacher Socrates (399 BC) and by his own school of philosophy - the Academy. In his detailed analysis of Plato's dialogues and letters, the author sheds light on central questions of authenticity, style and

chronology of the entire work. The author focusses on Plato’s epistemology, his theory of principles, conveyed orally, and the examination of the very significant Seventh Letter. Furthermore, he gives a detailed introduction to Plato's thinking. He addresses Plato’s conception of man, anthropology, theory of the soul and last but not least his ethics. Based on this background, Plato's theory of state, his cosmology and the theory of principles are vividly explained. And finally, the question of the idea of the good, the "principle of everything" and thus Plato's concept of God comes to the fore. Thomas Alexander Szlezák taught Greek philology as well as ancient philosophy at the University of Tübingen. Michael Sommer Dark Days Rome's Wars against Carthage Summer 216 B.C. - what began 50 years earlier as a dispute between Rome and Carthage over Sicily threatens to end in a total catastrophe for the city on the Tiber: The Carthaginian Hannibal has crossed the Alps in a strategic coup, stands in northern Italy and decimates the Roman troops in a series of battles. The name CANNAE, where at least 50,000 legionnaires were killed, is like a warning sign for Rome. When the three so-called Punic Wars were fought, Carthage lays in ruins. The ancient Phoenician foundation in North Africa is said to have burned for seventeen days after the Roman commander-in-chief Scipio took it. Carthage is completely destroyed, its site cursed. The surviving inhabitants are sold into slavery. For Rome, however, the rise to a world empire

begins. With critical view of sources, research and backgrounds Michael Sommer illuminates the causes, course and consequences of the Roman-Carthaginian conflict - a didactic play about the timeless questions of power, rivalry and violence! Jörg Lauster The Holy Spirit A Biography Jörg Lauster tells the biography of the Holy Spirit from the story of creation through early Christian, mystical, philosophical and romantic ideas of the spirit to today's Pentecostal Christianity and the question of where in a disenchanted world the spirit can be heard. He vividly shows how, in the name of the spirit, new departures have occurred again and again, but also explores the dark side of this enigmatic power. Besides God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit is the third person of the "triune God". He hovered over the primeval flood before creation, lowered himself on Jesus at his baptism and let the apostles preach in foreign languages in the miracle of Pentecost. The Spirit appears as a murmuring wind and roaring storm, as fire and dove, in the church and in nature. He is the great transforming force, inspiring

love, he fuels visions, inspires artists and preachers, undermines traditions and authorities and, as a world spirit, drives history forward. Jörg Lauster's biography of the Holy Spirit goes far beyond the history of theology, because political utopias, philosophical ideas of freedom, the cult of artistic genius or the modern view of nature show how the Spirit finds expression even in a secularised world. The secret centre of this first biography of the Holy Spirit is the philosophy of the Renaissance, which like a hinge connects medieval and modern, divine and human spirit. Jörg Lauster is Professor of Systematic Theology at the University of Munich and has held visiting professorships in Venice, Rome and Chile. His most recent publication by C.H.Beck is "Die Verzauberung der Welt. Eine Kulturgeschichte des Christentums" (2017, C.H.Beck Paperback 2020). Johannes Fried Jesus or Paul The Origin of Christianity in Conflict "Jesus lives!" After Jesus' crucifixion this good news could be understood in many different ways. His closest associates knew that he had survived the cross and preserved the words of the fled master. The apostle Paul, however, proclaimed the resurrection of the Son of God from the dead and had little interest in the life of the Jewish teacher. Johannes Fried reconstructs the conflict and shows how Paul's teaching prevailed in the end. Death on the cross, resurrection, mission of the apostles to Jews and Gentiles, our concepts about early Christianity are still strongly influenced by traditions of faith. The historian Johannes Fried re-interrogates the biblical and extra-biblical sources and puts them together to form a new, coherent picture: there was a basic conflict in

the emerging Christianity between followers of Jesus in Jerusalem, who knew about his survival and who held his teachings in the earliest core of the Gospel of Thomas, and the Apostle Paul, who spread the message of the substitutionary atoning death of the Son of God in the pagan world. The message of Paul prevailed in the Roman Empire. The tradition of Jesus' followers, on the other hand, was branded heretic and only a few traces remain. Johannes Fried follows them with the tools of the historian and shows that everything could have been very different from what we believe. Johannes Fried is Professor em. of Medieval History at the University of Frankfurt am Main and member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature, Mainz. He was chairman of the Association of Historians in Germany and has received many awards, including the Deutscher Historiker Preis (German Historian Prize 1995) and the Sigmund Freud Prize for scholarly prose (2006). Simplified Chinese: Social Sciences Academic Press Dieter Henrich On Thinking A Philosophical Autobiography In conversation with Matthias Bormuth and Ulrich von Bülow Dieter Henrich is known worldwide as an explorer of German idealism and philosopher of subjectivity. In conversations with Matthias Bormuth and Ulrich von Bülow, he sums up the stages of his path to and in philosophy, the course of his thinking and his encounters with teachers, contemporaries and companions. Among them are Hans-Georg Gadamer, Martin Heidegger, Theodor W. Adorno, Hilary Putnam, or even Sergiu Celibidache and Alexander Mitscherlich, who, after several sessions, certified that he did not need psychoanalysis. As a child he was seriously ill for a long time. Today he sees this as one of the reasons why philosophy became his life's work. Dieter Henrich's

philosophical autobiography is rich in concise memories of people and events in many spheres of life and regions of the world. He became one of the most influential philosophers of his time, with an open-ended, undogmatic philosophy, in which the freedom of the subject is understood as one made possible and not one initiated by self-power. In conversations conducted with great openness, we get to know an elegant, age-old metaphysician without system and without doctrines, who pursues human subjectivity in its happiness and hardships, its confusions and liberating moments, exploring the perspectives and conflicts into which a thinking is drawn, that has the courage to expose itself to even the last questions. Dieter Henrich is one of the most influential German philosophers with an international reputation. He is a member of many national and international academies and has received numerous honours and awards, including the German Language Prize. Matthias Bormuth is a medical ethicist and cultural scientist. He has held the Heisenberg Professorship for Comparative History of Ideas at the University of Oldenburg since 2012 and manages the Karl-Jaspers-Haus there. Ulrich von Bülow has been head of the archive department at the German Literature Archive in Marbach since 2006. Ulrich Herbert Who were the National Socialists? This simple question touches the core of the Nazi regime. Ulrich Herbert, one of the most respected contemporary historians, explores the specific characteristics of the National Socialist dictatorship and analyzes central themes in the history of the Third Reich, from the origins of antisemitism to the careers of former Nazi functionaries in the Federal Republic. Was it a small group of criminals who seduced the German people? A project of traditional elites? Or was it a fascist movement supported by broad sections of the population? The answers to the question of who the National Socialists were are as numerous as the attempts to fade out personal continuities and to draw a line between the crimes of the regime and one's own responsibility. By taking this question as the starting point for his studies, Ulrich Herbert shows the character of the Nazi dictatorship

and reveals central aspects of its rule. His lucid essays not only combine his reflections on the history of National Socialism, but also reflect the path that Nazi research has taken in recent decades. Ulrich Herbert is Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the University of Freiburg and one of the most internationally renowned historians of German contemporary History. His book "Geschichte Deutschlands im 20. Jahrhundert"has been highly acclaimed and received various prizes. Christoph Türcke Nature and Gender Criticism of a feasibility madness Corona and the climate change require an elementary return to nature. In a brilliant treatise, the philosopher Christoph Türcke shows how fatal it is to believe that nature is nothing but the disposable mass of our constructions. Constructivism and deconstructivism have equally promoted this belief. They are pseudo-critical spinoffs of a high-tech feasibility mania. Gender is already considered a construct for which there is only one criterion: personal sense of belonging. But that is losing sight of the fact that humans are merely natural beings. If we want to shape nature - including our own - at will and ignore its own inherent stubbornness, it will strike back at us even more violently.

Katajun Amirpur Khomeini The Revolutionary of Islam A Biography No other revolutionary has changed the Islamic world as much as Ruhollah Musawi Khomeini (1902-1989). In this first comprehensive Khomeini biography in german lanuguage, Katajun Amirpur discovers a scholar, poet and mystic largely unknown in the West and explains how this charismatic ascetic figure succeeded in politicising Shiite Islam and terrorising the overwhelming West. Khomeini remains a mystery to this day: the fashion-conscious ayatollah sang of wine and love in elegant poems, combined mysticism with classical erudition and won over liberals and leftists in his Parisian exile. Was he really so complex? Was a lot of him mere pretending? Or did he simply not get emotionally involved? When a journalist asked him how

he felt on his return to Iran after fifteen years in exile, he simply replied: "Nothing! Without any emoitons he burned the youth at the front and had political opponents executed. Katajun Amirpur tells vividly and in the context of Iranian history the life of Khomeini from his childhood in a provincial town to his death in Tehran. She introduces his most important teachers, companions and works and explains how he turned a traditionally apolitical religious world upside down in just a few years. Even more than thirty years after his death, Khomeini still holds sway over Iran: even members of the opposition claim his true heritage for themselves, as Katajun Amirpur shows at the end of her gripping book. Katajun Amirpur is Professor of Iranian Studies at the University of Cologne and writes regularly for major newspapers and magazines. Stefan Matuschek The Poetic Sky A History of Romanticism Romanticism is the art of building metaphysical castles in the sky. In his impressive portrayal of the epoch, Stefan Matuschek depicts Romanticism as the great impulse of European modernism, which continues to have an impact to the present day. From this perspective, he explores its innovations: from the Blue Flower to religious art, from Romantic irony to Gothic Romanticism, from the Renaissance of the Middle Ages to the utopia of popularity. Yet Romanticism was by no means a German affair. We encounter writers such as the Schlegel brothers and Eichendorff, Keats and Shelley, Victor Hugo or Alessandro Manzoni, as well as the great philosophers, painters and composers of the era. Everywhere the Romantics reacted to three major events: the French Revolution, the revolution in reading culture

and the nationalisation following Napoleon's imperialism. In this context, Stefan Matuschek presents a fresh, new overview of Romanticism. Stefan Matuschek holds the Chair of Modern German Literature, General and Comparative Literature at the University of Jena and is a renowned expert on European Romanticism. Franziska Meier Visit to Hell Dante's Divine Comedy Biography of a millennium book More than the Bible, Dante's Divine Comedy has shaped our idea of hell and paradise. How could a 700-year-old book become so popular, even though very few have read it? How could a 14th century book written in Italian, which even it’s contemporaries would only decipher with the help of commentaries, become a global cultural asset? And how does Dante's ruler of hell, Lucifer, get into Japanese manga? The novelist Franziska Meier follows the intricate history of the reception of this millennium book. In fact, it’s fame is only matched by Homer's Odyssey and Shakespeare's dramas. The success of the Divine Comedy has always been and is even today very

improbable. Dante's poetry is basically untranslatable. Nevertheless, the Divina Commedia is now available even in the most remote languages. Scenes and images from the work, still entirely originating from medieval world views, especially the visit to hell, were repeatedly reinterpreted. Thus, so many liberties were taken, that sometimes only small traces remained of the original. This Millennium Book gave Europe a blueprint. Franziska Meier is professor of Romance literature and comparative literature at the University of Göttingen and a member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences. Joseph Croitoru

Al-Aqsa or Temple Mount

The eternal fight for Jerusalem's holy places

Temple Mount for the Jews, third most important sanctuary for the

Muslims: The complex of the Dome of the Rock, Al-Aqsa Mosque and

Wailing Wall is the most mysterious and controversial holy place in the

world. Joseph Croitoru recounts its 3000-year history and describes how

the dispute over Jerusalem's holy sites has escalated steadily since the

19th century. Meanwhile Jewish zealots are planning a "third temple", the

resistance of the Muslims is suppressed with police violence. The age-old

place of prayer becomes a time bomb.

Summer 1981: In search of the lost Ark of the Covenant, Rabbi Jehuda Getz

digs through the holy rock and comes across an old vault. No sooner has

he climbed out than Muslims discover him in the side room of the mosque.

This leads to fights, a general strike and almost to an international crisis. The dispute over the Temple

Mount has long since reached its climax. A Jewish tunnel to the Wailing Wall caused uprisings in the 1990s.

At the same time the Muslims, under Jewish protest, converted the underground "Stables of Solomon"

into a winter mosque. Archaeologists were allowed to view 60 tons of excavated material on a rubble

heap. They are not allowed to dig. Based on numerous Hebrew and Arabic sources, Joseph Croitoru tells

the dramatic story of a struggle that has been charged with religious and political expectations of salvation

since ancient times. Unfortunatelly today there is less than ever a solution in sight.

Joseph Coritoru, born 1960 in Haifa, is a historian and journalist. Longtime author of the feature pages of

the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and NZZ with a focus on the Middle East and Eastern Europe, he now

writes for the Süddeutsche Zeitung and the taz, among others.

Hermann Kurzke Reading Literature like a Connoisseur A Guide for passionate Readers Can literature be read and interpreted "correctly"? Or is reading a novel, a poem, a play a thoroughly subjective experience? In his tour through German and European literature, the German scholar Hermann Kurzke shows that both options can be considered. This scholarly yet lightly written book aims to help people understand literature better, emphasizing on the pleasure to read. Through all genres and epochs Hermann Kurzke proves to be a gifted literary seducer. Whoever reads Kurzke has more to gain from reading. Hermann Kurzke is professor emeritus of modern German literature at the University of Mainz. He is known to a broad readership through his great biography of Thomas Mann "Thomas Mann. Dennis Pausch Virtuoso Vileness The Art of Insulting in Ancient Rome Asinus asino pulcherrimus (One donkey considers the other one as very beautiful) The most beautiful insults in antiquity. Dennis Pausch invites us to an entertaining advanced training in the art of insulting. The Romans put a lot of love and care into making their opponents furious, ridiculous and contemptuous. From ironic mockery to aggressive defamation, they used variously refined forms of insult. Some of the most educated and cultured men of their time are said to have really enjoyed this kind of battle. But how do you play this game correctly? When were verbal attacks "successful"? And what did those who were not talented to find a clever way to insult? Dennis Pausch provides surprising insights into the astonishingly ambiguous Roman culture of insults. He uses real

examples to illustrate the historical and literary contexts. The book is worth reading - regardless of whether you see the ancient diatribes as a deterrent or as inspiration. Dennis Pausch is Professor of Classical Philology/Latin at the University of Dresden. He is researcher in ancient historiography and (auto-)biographical texts. The art of insulting is his favourite pastime in a research project on linguistic degradation in the 1st century B.C. Nora Eckert Like Everyone, but Different A Transsexual Life in Berlin A nineteen-year-old moves to West Berlin in 1973 to escape from the military service. He immediately falls for the rough charm of the run-down devided city. But above all, the supposedly gay man realises that he is a transsexual. In order to be who she is, he hires at Chez Romy Haag, the most famous travesty club in Europe at the time. Not only David Bowie goes in and out there. And everyone who enters this club now has to pass Nora Eckert, the cloakroom attendant in the small establishment in Berlin-Schöneberg. With great naturalness, wit and laconicity, Nora Eckert recounts her change of sex: painful depilations, the initial irritation when buying shoes and clothes, self-treatment with hormones and the feeling of happiness

to live "a third way". She tells of the humiliating assessment process she had to undergo in order to also be "officially" a woman. Retrained as a steno-contorist from the Berlin employment office, Nora Eckert returns to the bourgeois world in 1982. Now she plunges into the "highly cultural" nightlife of the city: theatre, opera, concerts. The stage on which all this takes place is the second heroine of this book, which is also a great declaration of love to the wild, hedonistic West Berlin. Nora Eckert was born in Nuremberg in 1954 and came to West Berlin at the end of 1973, where she still lives today. The publicist has written six books on opera and theatre, on 20th century stage design and on Parsifal. She is on the board of the association TrIQ TransInterQueer e.V. Berlin. Sören Urbansky On the banks of the Amur The forgotten world between China and Russia On the Amur river, China and Russia collide over a length of almost 2000 kilometres. Sören Urbansky travelled for a year from Lake Baikal to the Sea of Japan through the remote border region. In his captivating report on the "Black Dragon", as the Chinese call the giant river, he masterly decifers the great tectonic shifts of the superpowers. Where North of China is becoming Siberian and Southeast of Russia increasingly Chinese, the two authoritarian empires stand back to back to eachother. Until the Second World War, the Soviet Union and Japan fought for supremacy here. In his search for traces of history, Sören Urbansky has come across an astonishing Sino-Russian present. In his

vividly narrated book, he tells of prospering Chinese metropolises and torbid Russian places on the other side of the river - a few decades ago it was the other way around. He visits cities like Harbin in north-eastern China, once "Moscow of the East", and Vladivostok, the Russian San Francisco and is a guest of ordinary people who speak fluent Chinese and Russian and sip their solyanka with chopsticks. His empathetic report comes very close to the profiteers and losers of the border and allows unusual insights into the two great powers and their tense relationship. Sören Urbansky, PhD, heads the Pacific Regional Office of the German Historical Institute in Washington. He studied, researched and taught in Frankfurt a.d. Philipp Lahm The Game The World of Soccer Goals, titles, great matches - business, racism, depression. Both levels belong to the world of modern football. With its sporting intensity, it thrills fans around the globe, but if you want to play football at the highest level, it demands extreme dedication and discipline. Philipp Lahm has been one of the best in this sport and has experienced its sunny and dark sides like no other. Now he presents his view of todays world of soccer in an exciting, clear and competent way. Soccer is a global event - games of the top clubs are marketed in all parts of the world through the media. Soccer is a social event - in which children and young people get excited about a common goal and learn, under good

guidance, to respect rules, teammates, opponents and referees. Soccer is a collective event where people gather to watch the games of their teams and passionately discuss talents, coaches and game systems. Soccer can change lives if someone decides to take on responsibility - for example, for the youngsters in a club, as an official in hosting games, but also to become an athlete. Philipp Lahm, world champion, Champions League winner reports on all this and much more. He explains the possibilities and the risks of professional training today, outlining different types of coaches in order to show what it means to become a national player. Philipp Lahm has celebrated countless national and international successes, was footballer of the year 2016/17 and was considered as one of the fairest in his sport. To this day, Philipp Lahm has preserved inner independence and has an unerring judgement for all developments in the soccer world. Pia Volk The strangest places in Germany A touristic Guide for Locals Are there any places in Germany left to be amazed and wondered about? The geographer and journalist Pia Volk has looked around between the Wadden Sea and the Allgäu, between the banks of the Main River in Frankfurt and the Sorb region, and has come across all sorts of strange and odd places: an oak tree with its own address; a washed-out Atlantis in the North Sea and a chandelier in the Cologne sewers. She has walked along a path that leads across the site of a nuclear power station and has crossed a military training area on her way to imposing tombs. She has jumped over a rocky landscape full of cavities, where all water disappears, and has learned how a church tower can be used to draw conclusions about probably the most gigantic event in German earth

history. She listened to Sorbian fairytales, Saterfriesian proverbs and sounds that last for years. She nerrates about bizarre landscapes, eccentric worlds and obscure objects. She leads to geographical and historical curiosities and teaches us to see Germany with new eyes. Pia Volk writes for the newspapers Süddeutsche Zeitung, the ZEIT and in many different magazines. As a storyteller you can hear her on Deutschlandfunk Nova. She studied geography and ethnology and after graduating she went on to study journalism. From Leipzig she explores the big, wide world. Peter Landau Lawyers of Jewish origin in the German Empire and in the Weimar Republic With an afterword by Michael Stolleis Peter Landau is one of the outstanding German legal historians of the 20th century. Here he potrays the work of German lawyers of Jewish origin during the heyday of their activity from the German Empire to the end of the Weimar Republic. Michael Stolleis wrote an epilogue for the volume. "The reassurance of today's generation about the achievements of German lawyers of Jewish origin can serve to find the 'common intellectual center' (Savigny) that also connects German lawyers at the end of the 20th century with their Jewish predecessors". Michael Lüders The Hypocritical Superpower Why we need to step out of the United States shadow Power and the media - an unsparing analysis by Michael Lüders We are the good guys" - that is how the West and its leading power, the USA, prefer to see themselves. But standing up for human rights and democracy is only one side of the coin. On the other, there is tough power politics. During the Cold War, the USA overthrew progressive governments without moral scruples, with disastrous consequences for the population. This is what happened in Guatemala, Iran and Chile. In 2003, Washington invaded Iraq and gave the puplic falsified reasons for entering the war. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis died and the country fell into chaos. Yet for many, the American myth of the selfless hegemon is catching on. Even in the media, Washington's good-evil scheme is rarely questioned.

Instead, double standards are often applied. In his new book, Michael Lüders uses concrete examples to show how easily the public opinion can be manipulated. Yesterday we could see this happening in the Iraq war and today in the confrontation with Iran, China and Russia. However, the U.S. is a world power in decline. Europe must question how to safeguard its interests in a changing world. We can no longer afford to be Washington's junior partner in the long run. Michael Lüders was Middle East correspondent of the weekly newspaper Die ZEIT for many years. He is President of the German-Arab Society, succeeding Peter Scholl-Latour. Heribert Prantl Need and Necessity Basic Rights in Quarantine In the fight against the corona pandemic, states around the world are taking measures that would otherwise only be conceivable in times of war. Unprecedented restrictions on freedom are being imposed . But the current emergency is one thing, the commandments of the Basic Law another. Can everything work with Corona? Do basic rights also have to be quarantined in order to defeat the virus? In his new book, Heribert Prantl tells of life in a state of emergency and the lessons learned from it. He measures the tension between necessity and commandment. Fundamental rights do always apply, even in the event of a disaster, especially then. If fundamental rights had to give way in times of need, they would not be fundamental. Fear of the virus must not lead to

their abolition. Not every restriction of freedom is also a violation of fundamental rights. Politicians must weigh up the pros and cons, be moderate and use proportionate means. They have to protect citizens from the virus and at the same time from damage to the democratic system. Prantl's book shows how politics are influenced by fear. But it also shows how a good future can be built by reflecting on fundamental rights and values. This is a warning against new nationalism and the poison of populism. For many years Heribert Prantl was head of the department of domestic policy and editor-in-chief of the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Aleida Assmann The Reinvention of the Nation Why we fear it and why we need it Among intellectuals, the concept of nation is ambiguos. But who says that nation automatically means ethnic homogeneity and a comunity which excludes others? Aleida Assmann winner of the Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels (Peace Prize of the German Booksellers Assosiation in 2018) calls for rethinking the concept of nation and defends it against its despisers. The tabooing of the concept of nation has led to a lack of awareness and discussion about the meaning and role of the nation. Aleida Assmann's new book aims to stimulate this debate: it pleads for the reinvention of a form of nation that understands itself as democratic, civil and diverse and is able to face the enormous tasks of the future in solidarity. In order to better understand the current crisis of the nation it is indispensable to examine the

different narratives determining the past, future and identity of social groups. They prove to be a key to the question of all ideas dividing nations - and of all concepts unifing them. Aleida Assmann is professor emerita of English and General Literature at the University of Konstanz. She has received many awards, including the A. H. Heineken Prize for History (2014), the Balzan Prize (with Jan Assmann, 2017). Gerrit Walther Competition between states and reason Europe 1648-1789 The ten-volume series "C.H.Beck History of Europe" offers European history from antiquity to the present. With the book by Gerrit Walther the edition is completed. Gerrit Walther describes the political changes which occurred within the European states and within parts of the non-European world during the "long" 18th century including the period from 1648 to 1789. The epoch saw the rise of the absolutist state which constantly expanded its power. But it was also marked by a never-ending number of wars: from the Wars of the Turks, the War of the Spanish Succession, the Nordic War, the Silesian Wars to the Seven Years' War, the first world war in history. The interstate conflicts were the great driving force for the changes of this epoch. They generated those new forms of thinking, speaking and

values which led to the most important Western cultural movement defined as "Enlightenment". State competition and reason are the defining concepts of this epoch, which affected not only individual countries but Europe as a whole. Gerrit Walther is Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Wuppertal. He is President of the Historical Commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities and a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences. Eva Gruberová Helmut Zeller Diagnosis: Hatred of Jews The return of a German disease After the attack on the synagogue in Halle in 2019 and the massive spread of anti-Semitic conspiracy myths in the Corona crisis, this image of Jewish life in Germany became deeply fissured. What do Jews experience in their everyday life in Germany? Eva Gruberová and Helmut Zeller travelled through Germany and listened Jewish voices - from Rostock via Berlin to Dortmund and Munich, with a detour to Vienna. Jews in this country cannot lead a normal life unless one consideres police and security fences in front of Jewish kindergartens, attacks on synagogues, swastikas on school benches, destroyed gravestones, Hitler greetings and student selfies at concentration camp

memorials as part of German normality. Jews have been the target of right-wing extremist attacks and assassination attempts not only since Halle, but for decades. They experience attacks and hostility also from Muslim milieus suffering themselves from racism. But many do not see: Anti-Semitism came and still comes from the "bourgeois middle class". The reports, interviews and analyses make it clear that hatred of Jews is deeply rooted in society - and concerns us all. Eva Gruberová works as an author and freelance journalist; she is lecturer at the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial and conducts workshops on Nazi history, right-wing extremism and anti-Semitism for young people. Helmut Zeller has headed the Dachau editorial office of the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" for many years. Jonas Lüscher Michael Zichy (Hrsg.) The Populist Planet Has the "elite" really lost contact with the "people"? What does it really mean to take people's fears seriously? An international group of thinkers opens the common stories of populists in different countries up to debate. Right-wing and left-wing populists around the world are united by the same narrative: the state is in the hands of a globalist-thinking, mostly urban elite, which has long since lost contact with the "normal" citizens and can no longer understand the everyday concerns of the "people". The populists not belonging to this elite would therefore be the only ones to understand, openly articulate and take seriously the fears of the citizens. The writer Jonas Lüscher and the philosopher Michael Zichy have put together a diverse group to identify the similarities, but also the differences between the manifestations of populism under different social, economic and

religious conditions. This book originates from conversations between Budapest, Cairo, Brasilia, Nairobi, Moscow, Salzburg and Zurich. With contributions by Jonas Lüscher, Michael Zichy, Maria Stepanova, Youssef Rakkha, Yvonne Owuor, Carol Pires, Naren Bedide and Ágnes Heller. Jonas Lüscher is a writer. His novella "Frühling der Barbaren" became a bestseller, was on the longlist for the German Book Prize and was nominated for the Swiss Book Prize. It has been translated into about 20 languages. Lüscher's novel "Kraft" won the Swiss Book Prize. Jonas Lüscher has also received the Hans Fallada Prize and the Prix Franz Hessel, among others. Armin Nassehi Patterns Theory of a Digital Society We think that the triumph of digital technology has revolutionised the world within a few years. Our interpersonal relations, our work and even the outcome of democratic elections: Everything has followed completely different rules since we have the internet, social media and the various gadgets of the big technology companies. In his new social theory, sociologist Armin Nassehi turns the tables and reveals, that beyond panic and trivialisation, digitisation is only a particularly sophisticated technical answer to a question that has always been asked in modern societies. "With its hermeneutic depth of focus, 'Muster' follows the great social studies

of Adorno, Habermas, Luhmann, Bourdieu ... If it is done as cleverly and entertainingly as here, social science could once again be a true leading discipline." Wolfgang Huber Dietrich Bonhoeffer On the Road to Freedom A Portrait Dietrich Bonhoeffer is one of the most powerful theologians of the 20th century. His resistance against Hitler inspired protest movements against oppression and inequality worldwide. His letters from prison were seen as a new beginning for theology. Wolfgang Huber places Bonhoeffer's thinking at the centre of his wonderfully concise portrait and makes it clear why the courageous decisions of this exceptional theologian can still be an incentive today. In June 1939 Dietrich Bonhoeffer was offered a job in New York, but the young theologian decided against exile. Shortly before the beginning of the Second World War he returned to Berlin to fight for a better Germany. A period of conspiracy, camouflage, imprisonment, loneliness

and confidence follows. Wolfgang Huber explains why these existential conditions inspired him his most popular writings, such as his "Ethics" and his "Resistance and Surrender". The new approaches of the great "unfinished" theologian, who was executed on the 9th of April 1945 at Hitler's personal order, continues to encourage people to believe and act consequently. Wolfgang Huber, Professor of Theology in Berlin, Heidelberg and Stellenbosch (South Africa), was, among other things, Chairman of the Council of the Protestant Church in Germany and member of the German Ethics Council. He is involved in the Wittenberg Centre for Global Ethics and the Global Perspectives Initiative and has received many awards. He is editor of the new edition of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's works. What made the 23-year-old risk his life in the fight against Hitler? Robert Zoske draws a new, fascinating picture of the young resistance fighter using previously unknown documents. Elke Hartmann Women in Antiquity Female life experiences from Sappho to Theodora This volume offers a compelling introduction to over thousand years of women's history in Greek and Roman times. The spectrum of topics ranges from the childhood and education of girls in antiquity, to the position of women as wives and citizens, as hetaera and priestesses, to their role as rulers and martyrs. The author describes on the one hand, how contemporaries thought about the position of women, on the other hand, where women actually found their place at home, in society, economy, religion, philosophy and also in politics. Using numerous individual examples from myth and history - such as

Penelope, Sappho, Medea, Messalina and Theodora - their presentation is always contrasted with concrete life storie. The result is a lively, multifaceted book. Wolfgang Welsch Brilliant Moments of Philosophy From Heraclitus to Julia Kristeva Philosophy is often a difficult and lengthy business. But there are moments when a philosophical analysis suddenly sheds a great light - on a particular problem, on our lives, on society, on the world. The philosopher Wolfgang Welsch has collected such brilliant moments from antiquity to the present. From Heraclitus to Julia Kristeva and Arthur Danto, Welsch depicts inspiring ideas and thoughts that shed new light on the world and whose radiant power is still unbroken today. Both the brisance and the actuality are illustrated with 22 examples. The spectrum ranges from the Presocratics to the present. Some of the authors discussed here, such as the Zen master Dōgen or the multitalented Samuel Butler, are not

generally considered to be philosophers. But it is not a matter of academic categories, but of inspired ideas. Wherever they emerge and grasp us, philosophy happens. Wolfgang Welsch is professor emeritus of philosophy. Until 2012 he taught theoretical philosophy at the University of Jena. Hans Pleschinski At the Tree of Gods On an evening in April 2019, city councillor Antonia Silberstein sets off from Munich's Marienplatz for a very special sightseeing tour. She is accompanied by writer Ortrud Vandervelt and the librarian Therese Flößer. The destination of the whimsical walk of the three women: the former villa of a great forgotten man, hidden behind a wall. Antonia Silberstein has bold plans for this villa, but she needs good advice from an expert. Already on the walk, the women, meandering between cars, passers-by, traffic islands, are at odds over the rank, work and legacy of the man whose former residence they could transform into a spectacular cultural centre: Paul Heyse. Heyse (1830-1914), the first “real” German winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, was highly honoured at his time. A liberal, handsome man

with a lovable charisma, author of novels, plays and 180 (!) novellas, is forgotten today, so even in Munich only a tunnel reminds of him. Did he deserve this? In his new novel, Hans Pleschinski tells knowledgeably, sharp-tonguedly and comically about Heyse's life and work, about fame and transience and the ever-threatened richness of culture in a world that is deteriorating. With a close look at the present, he ignites a highly entertaining firework display in sparkling dialogues. Hans Pleschinski, born 1956, lives as a freelance author in Munich. He published the novels "Leichtes Licht" (2005), "Ludwigshöhe" (2008), "Königsallee" (2013) and "Wiesenstein" (2018) with C.H.Beck, which became bestsellers, and edited the letters of Madame de Pompadour, a selection from the diary of the Duke of Croÿ and the memoirs of Else Sohn-Rethel. Most recently, he received the Hannelore-Greve Prize for Literature (2006), the Nicolas Born Prize (2008) and was appointed Chevalier dans l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres of the Republic of France in 2012. In 2014 he received the Literature Prize of the City of Munich and the Lower Rhine Literature Prize. In 2020 he was awarded the literature prize of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. Nicola Kabel Little freedom Judge Saskia Baumgartner just turned forty and is on parental leave for her two sons, while her husband Christian commutes between his hometown in the North German province and a law firm in Hamburg. A planned wind farm on her doorstep is upsetting Saskia's orderly life. When she gets involved in a citizens' initiative, Joachim von Wedekamp pays special attention to her. She enters into his conservative circle and is irritated to find out that behind his opposition to the wind farm lies a much more fundamental criticism of today's society, immigration and changing values. Wedekamp's fatherly and polite manner contrasts with her own father, Hans Bräuninger, an alto-68, whom she loves and yet is often embarrassed by. With him, Saskia and her chaotic little sister Sophie grew up in colourful flat-shares after their mother left the family. Although successful as a lawyer, he has nevertheless retained his furious

criticism of rampant inequality, global capitalism and the consumer society, is as unconventional as ever and does not spare any relatives. In her sensitive debut novel, Nicola Kabel tells a touching father-daughter story, which at the same time puts its finger in the wounds inflicted on us by the ordeals of the present. Nicola Kabel, born 1978, studied history and public law in Hamburg and was editor of the Deutsche Presse-Agentur for several years. She has been working in political communication since 2012. She lives with her family in Lübeck. Nicola Kabel Little freedom 272 pages € 22,- German title: Nicola Kabel Kleine Freiheit

Jochen Schmidt I remember how King Kong died A Florilegium What do you do if your girlfriend has given you a very urgent order before you leave, partly because you are looking after your child and you have forgotten about him or her? Why did you always have to go to the "countryside" as a child when television was much more interesting, and to what extent did these excursions permanently damage your relationship with nature? And what is it that makes reading tours, for example to the tranquil Pufen, so unforgettable? That you were once again allowed to sign the book of another author of the same name after the reading? Jochen Schmidt is the master of wonder and amazement, of an always slightly irritated self-exploration and the eternal longing to finally be allowed to play, read and collect with such joy of discovery and

incontrovertibility as one was never actually allowed to do as a child. In the stories of this volume, adorned with photo essays and cartoons, the pleasure of pretending to have grown up is shown to its fullest extent. Whether it is a text on the idealised idea of a childhood in the West as a GDR child or the old town of Prague - reading Schmidt is always pure pleasure. Jochen Schmidt was born in Berlin in 1970 and lives there. C.H.Beck has published the story collections "Triumphgemüse" (2000), "Meine wichtigsten Körperfunktionen" (2007) and "Der Wächter von Pankow" (2015), the novels "Müller haut uns raus" (2002), "Schneckenmühle" (2013), "Zuckersand" (2017) and "Ein Auftrag für Otto Kwant" (2019) and, together with Line Hoven, "Schmythologie" (2013) and "Paargespräche" (2020).
