Born to a West Vancouver family involved in the

fishing industry, Bill Millerd C.M., D.Litt. (Hon.) graduated from the University of British Columbia with a BA in Political Science and International Studies, and later from the National Theatre School in Montreal in the Production/Technical department. Bill has worked for several Canadian theatre companies, including the Shaw Festival and the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company.

Since 1972, Bill has been the Artistic Managing Director of Vancouver’s Arts Club Theatre Company, now in its

50th season. During his time with the company, Bill has expanded its operations to include year-round programming and regional and national tours.

Bill oversaw the construction of two theatres on Granville Island—Granville Island Stage, in the fall of 1979, and the Revue Stage, in 1983—and the reopening of the historic Stanley Theatre, now the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, in 1998.

During his tenure, 500 plays have been produced, over 100 of which Bill has directed.

Under Bill’s leadership, the theatre has staged over 120 Canadian works, including more than 80 premieres of new Canadian plays.

Bill is a Governor of the National Theatre School of Canada, has received a Jessie Richardson Theatre Award for Career Achievement, the Mayor’s Arts Award, and is a member of the Order of Canada.

He has been awarded an Alumni Award of Distinction and an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from UBC, and last year was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from Tourism Vancouver.

DR. RED ROBINSON D.LITT, (HON.)Master of Ceremonies

Red Robinson is a legend in his own time, and an integral part of Vancouver’s broadcasting history. Red’s devotion, interest and help to so many charitable causes, particularly as a Founding Director of the CH.I.L.D. Foundation, is also legendary. Red is one of the few Canadians to be elected into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in the USA, and the Canadian Broadcast Hall of Fame and the only one we know who has had a theatre named after him for his many contributions to our community.

DR. GRACE M. McCARTHY O.C., O.B.C., LL.D., D.TECH., F.R.A.I.C. (Hon)Chairman of the Board, CH.I.L.D. Foundation

The CH.I.L.D. Foundation continues to raise much needed funds to support research for children with intestinal and liver disorders. The Foundation has partnered this year with the Canadian Governments’ Canadian Institutes of Health Research to propel a Nation-wide Network for Inflammatory Bowel Disease, enabling researchers to share their knowledge with each other, clinicians, parents and families. The remarkable success of the CH.I.L.D. Foundation is because of the support of individuals like you. Thank You.

TIM MURPHY M.B.A., C.M.A.

Executive Director, CH.I.L.D. Foundation National Pediatric IBD Network

This evening we are most pleased to welcome many members of the Canadian Children Inflammatory Bowel Disease Network: A Joint Partnership of CIHR and CH.I.L.D. Foundation. The Network is composed of researchers working at 10 academic institutions across seven Provinces. We pay tribute to Dr. Phillip Sherman, Director for CIHR Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes, Paul Bélanger, Assistant Director for CIHR/INMD and Allison Forsythe, Associate, CIHR/INMD. We so appreciate the considerable expertise of the Chair of the Network Advisory Committee, Cathleen Morrison, and welcome Advisory Member Neelu Chauhan, as well as members of the Network leadership team led by Dr. Anne Griffiths: Dr. David Mack and Dr. Bruce Vallance. Grateful thanks to Dr. Brett Finlay and Dr. Aubrey Tingle for their continued important guidance to the CH.I.L.D. Foundation throughout the many years of planning this first network for IBD pediatric research in Canada.

SARA-JEANNE HOSIE Actress

We thank the very talented Sara-Jeanne Hosie for giving us a sneak peek at her upcoming lead role in Mary Poppins. The tale of everyone’s favourite magical nanny will sweep you off your feet, and will be playing at the Arts Club Industrial Alliance Stage starting November 7th. Sara-Jeanne has performed the title role in A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline, as Rona Lisa Peretti in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Jessie Award, best production), Fantine in Les Misérables, Sally Bowles in Cabaret, Sarah in Company, and Woman #1 in Jacques Brel.

THE GREATER VANCOUVER DOORMAN'S ASSOCIATION

It was Sam Caros and Doug Edgeworth who began with a small gathering of

Doormen to host an appreciation party for their loyal customers in the early

eighties. Together with “Mr. Dinner” Gordie Weber, Mike and Cathy Miller,

Charles Tomozer, and Mark Brailey, the popular events grew larger.

In recent years, the Doormen of Greater Vancouver have used the annual

dinner to raise over $800,000 to find a cure through research for children who

suffer from Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis and liver disorders.

This evening would not be possible without the gracious and professional

assistance from the Doormen of the following Hotels: Century Plaza Hotel &

Spa, Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel, Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel, Fairmont

Vancouver Hotel, Fairmont Waterfront Hotel, Hotel LeSoleil, Marriott

Vancouver Pinnacle Downtown Hotel, Millennium New York Hotel, Pan

Pacific Vancouver Hotel, River Rock Resort and Hotel, and Sutton Place Hotel.

The extraordinary decor has been produced by ROA Floral and Event Designs.

Our appreciation to CC Roa, CAFA, CFD, WFC, and to Tony Graaf and Sean of

Kirby Signature.

SPECIAL THANKS!

The CH.l.L.D. Foundation was established in 1995, founded by Grace M. McCarthy, O.C., O.B.C., LL.D., D.TECH.,

F.R.A.I.C. (Hon.), Lindsay Gordon and Mary Parsons to fund research for children who are stricken with Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis and liver disorders. Driven by dedicated volunteers, the CH.I.L.D. Foundation has created unprecedented public awareness, due in large part by donated support from the media and the business community. The CH.I.L.D. Foundation has taken this severely under-funded health issue in children and raised the profile to such an extent that health providers and hospital leaders, as well as the general public, are now responsive to the needs of these children.

The Foundation has established the very first Endowed Chair in Canada for Pediatric Gastroenterology Research at the University of British Columbia and the first Endowed Research Program at Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. We have built B.C.’s first research lab which now has twenty researchers receiving national and international recognition for their work.

After a decade of innovative planning, The Canadian Children Inflammatory Bowel Disease Network: A Joint Partnership of CIHR and CH.I.L.D. Foundation has commenced, and is the first network of its’ kind in Canada. The Network’s leadership are with us tonight, representing ten major academic institutions across seven Provinces, as well as the Network Advisory Committee. The CH.I.L.D. Foundation and CIHR are delighted to support this national effort to improve the lives of pediatric IBD patients. We applaud their efforts for enhancing better patient care and outcomes on the way to finding a cure.

Net proceeds from the Annual Doormen’s Dinner benefit The CH.I.L.D. Foundation and we are privileged to be supported by generous Sponsors and Donors, particularly the continued help from Concord Pacific, Great Canadian Dollar Store, WirelessWave and WestJet.

Our appreciation to our hard-working volunteers this evening, behind the scenes and on stage, particularly the talented Sara-Jeanne Hosie and the remarkable Theresa Odishaw. To all the amazing Doormen, and to our Guests — thank you for helping the very ill children and families we serve.

Enjoy the evening!
