6. First-time setting

The tracker can be configured by using the official application – cGuard Configurator. You can

download the latest version of this program from the manufacturer’s website. To find the help

file click the logo (cGuard Configurator) in the interface of a program.

Pic.2. Setting the device parameters by cGuard Configurator

“Tracker” tab contains general information about tracker, its location, IMEI, ID and current

firmware version. Also, there’s the ability to change the unique ID (for identifying the device in

monitoring system), upload the firmware, and to upload the configuration saved to file before.

More about working with configurator can be seen in the remote configuration guide on the

website.

6.1 Choosing device mode

cGuard Beacon can work in two modes: “Asset” (default mode) and “Tracker”. Mode can be

changed by parameter DEVICE_MODE in advanced settings window in configurator (see pic.

3):

value ASSET corresponds to an “Asset” mode,

value TRACKER corresponds to a “Tracker” mode.

Page 9: cGuard Beacon · cGuard Beacon – User Guide 3 2. Introduction This guide represents the user instructions for the user monitoring terminal cGuard Beacon,

Pic.3. Advanced settings window

Also the working mode can be changed by the following SMS-commands:

PM_ASSET turns device mode to “Asset”,

PM_TRACKER turns device mode to “Tracker”.

“Asset” mode

In this mode device works by the following algorithm:

device leaves the deep sleeping mode and registers in a GSM network at a certain

time or after the specified time interval (how to set conditions for starting working

session – see below);

device sends data – object’s location and current speed to a monitoring server;

device returns to a deep sleeping mode.

Parameters to determine work conditions in asset mode:

ASSET_WAKE_AT – time, when the device starts working session in format hh:mm:ss,

example – 13:30:00 (device gets in touch at 13:30 every day). If the value of this parameter is

24:00:00, this parameter is ignored;

ASSET_WAKE_DAY1 – day, when the device starts working session (appropriate values –

MONDAY, TUESDAY etc., and also EVERYDAY). This parameter works together with

ASSET_WAKE_AT, and if ASSET_WAKE_AT is turned off (valued 24:00:00), then day

choosing parameter is ignored too;

ASSET_WAKE_PERIOD – time interval, after which device starts working, in minutes.

Example - 120 (device gets in touch every two hours). Minimal value – 15 min.

1 Available on devices with firmware 3.3.0 or higher

Page 10: cGuard Beacon · cGuard Beacon – User Guide 3 2. Introduction This guide represents the user instructions for the user monitoring terminal cGuard Beacon,

cGuard Beacon – User Guide

9

It’s impossible to use both these conditions (at precise day and time / after some period) at the

same device. Parameter ASSET_WAKE_AT has higher priority, i.e. if its value is different from

24:00:00, parameter ASSET_WAKE_PERIOD is ignored.

ASSET_MV_DETECTOR1 – parameter for motion detector activation in asset mode. Can have

values 1 or 0 (1 – on, 0 – off). If this detector is activated, then device starts to work in “Tracker”

mode since it began moving. When it stops, device returns into “Asset” mode (but the value of

DEVICE_MODE parameter doesn’t change).

ASSET_NAV_TIMEOUT1 – parameter to set the time for geoposition capturing after device

starts its work (by the working session conditions or by motion detector). If device fails to locate

it’s position by satellites after this time period ends, then it starts locating by basic GSM stations

(CELL_LOCATE).

“Tracker” mode

In “Tracker” mode device is connected permanently and is functioning the same way as usual

trackers producted by cGuard company (cGuard Atom as example). Geodata sending is managed

by settings in section “Navigation reporting criteria” as seen in pic. 4:

Pic.4. Navigation reporting criteria section in configurator

This mode is much more power-consuming than the “Asset” mode and sufficiently

decrease the battery lifetime.

6.2. Low battery alert customizing

When the battery charge level becomes lower than the adjusted threshold, tracker sends an

SMS to the assigned number:

"Tracker ID is discharged."

Phone number can be set in configurator (Settings\Advanced – see the pic. 5):

Pic.5. Setting number for low battery alert

NUMBER_TO_NOTIFY: phone number (+71234567890 ex)

11

or by remote command:

PARAM_SET:NUMBER_TO_NOTIFY:+71234567890

(more about remote configuring in corresponding guide)

To set the threshold of battery charge level find the following parameter (Settings\Advanced –

see the pic. 5):

BAT_LOW_TLD: charge level in V;

or use the remote command:

PARAM_SET:BAT_LOW_TLD:charge level in V.

Important! The phone number in this parameter must NOT be the same with

the number of the SIM-card installed in tracker. The tracker will freeze and the

money limit of its SIM-card can exceed.

6.3 Channel setting

For device status detecting it is necessary to set the working with data channels. It can be done in

“Channels” tab in configurator.

Pic.6. Channel setting in cGuard Configurator

Configurator shows the channel data values in real time, allows turning on/off data sending from

each channel and setting the sending conditions. The list of available channels of cGuard Beacon

can be seen in table 1.

To allow the data sending for the channel, go to “Channels” tab in configurator, then select the

needed channel in the channel list, get sure that the name of this channel is shown at the right

side (“Per-channel settings”) and set at least one of the sending conditions.

7. Cell Locate and A-GPS

cGuard Beacon has an ability to locate by signals from nearest base GSM stations (Cell-Locate

function). This type of locating is less precise than GPS/GLONASS, but it allows to locate even

when satellites signal is unavailable. This ability is useful for objects in hard conditions for

satellite capturing (tunnels, underground parkings, etc)

In cGuard Beacon this function is set as default and starts to work when the attempt of satellite

connection fails.

Also the device supports A-GPS – technology which accelerates the cold start of GPS-receiver.

At the first-time positioning the device sets internet-connection with A-GPS server by mobile

net. The data received from this server allows GPS-receiver to learn in what frequency range

satellites signals come, so it decreases the time of first-time locating from 30 seconds to 2-3

seconds. Also this technology allows to locate position even if the signal is low or unstable.

Page 15: cGuard Beacon · cGuard Beacon – User Guide 3 2. Introduction This guide represents the user instructions for the user monitoring terminal cGuard Beacon,

cGuard Beacon – User Guide

14

8. Remote configuration

Remote configuration of cGuard Beacon can be done by two data channels:

SMS

GPRS

Note, that in “Asset” mode only SMS is usable (device accepts and processes the commands

only during the working session), in “Tracker” mode – both channels are acceptable.

Acceptable commands and remote configuration guide can be downloaded from our website.

GPRS configuration allows customizing device parameters and uploading device firmware.

SMS-commands can change device parameters and make requests for device status and location.

Page 16: cGuard Beacon · cGuard Beacon – User Guide 3 2. Introduction This guide represents the user instructions for the user monitoring terminal cGuard Beacon,

cGuard Beacon – User Guide

15

9. Device status indication

There are two status LEDs on a tracker: SAT and DAT (see components of cGuard Beacon).

DAT indicator

DAT indicator lights while sending data sets by GPRS and indicates the work with mobile net. If

it’s lighting permanently, the connection is not established yet, if it’s blinking – data is sending

successfully.

SAT indicator

SAT LED indicates the positioning status (GPS/GLONASS satellites).

When power is connected appropriately, LEDs light and go out twice in order from SAT to

DAT: it signals that work started successfully. Then SAT begins to blink once or twice in 5

seconds – it is a stable device work indication. If it blinks twice, the device is searching for

satellites; if it blinks once – satellites are captured.

Colours of the LEDs may vary depending on device release party. It can be red, green or orange,

and the colour is not associated with functionality of LED.

If both LEDs are blinking or light permanently, there’s a system error of device. You should

connect the service center.
