Professional Practice Days

From the commencement of the 2018 school year, each teacher in Victoria became entitled to one day per term (four days per year) release from their scheduled duties, including teaching, to focus on the improved delivery of high quality teaching and learning. These days are in addition to existing pupil free days and pro-rata for a teacher employed part-time. The work undertaken on these days will be consistent with departmental and school priorities and selected from the following areas - planning, preparation, assessment of student learning, collaboration, curriculum development, relevant professional development and peer observation including feedback and reflection. During these days your children’s class will be covered by specialist teachers. The four professional practice days will create opportunities for teachers to reflect on and improve their practice and to have the opportunity to engage in purposeful collaboration so as to impact student learning.

Conversations About Learning

Engaging in a conversation with your child about school and their learning can be difficult at times. So why not start with sharing your story about your day before you begin with asking them about their day.

•What are you most proud about today? •What did you discover today? •How did it make you feel today? Why? •What next? What could you differently? Then…. Try these questions which might help you get a different response beyond what you are currently getting!

•What feedback were you given today? •How did that make you feel? •Who was that from? What could you do differently tomorrow?

Bicycle Helmets

It is an expectation that all students who ride bikes or scooters to school wear a helmet. Victorian law states that anyone riding a bike or scooter needs to wear an approved helmet. Failure to do so can result in a fine.

We Want Our Students To Tell Us What They Think!

We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction and are conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School Survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's schooling experience.Students from Year 4 to 6 at our school will participate in the survey. Your child will complete the survey online during school hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool. It is important to note that we are not in any way “testing” your child. Your child has the right to refuse or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during, or after completion of the survey.

Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. The student login is an assigned identifier that may be used to link data for statistical and research purposes only. All responses to the survey are kept anonymous in the response file. Personal identification data will not be recorded in the survey response file. This ensures that the confidentiality of your child’s responses is protected at all times.

This year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted at our school over the period Monday 29 April to Friday 7 June. The survey only takes 20 minutes to complete and occurs during your child's class time. The survey results will be reported back to the school before the end of term 2. All survey data that is made available in reports are for groups of students only so that no individual student can be identified. Data suppression rules are used for schools with low student numbers per year level. If you would like more information, please speak to your child’s teacher or visit: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/teachers/management/improvement/Pages/performsurveyat.aspx

Apps To Be Aware Of in 2019

BIGO LIVE - Live Stream

Kind of like Twitch and YouTube, BIGO LIVE lets teens stream live video of themselves that other users can see and comment on in real time. You can also receive and send "Beans" -- BIGO's term for virtual gifts -- that cost real money. You can

level up and improve your ranking by logging in every day and sending gifts. The platform is designed for people who supposedly want to get famous, but it seems to be filled mainly with people competing for gifts.

What parents need to know

BIGO has a lot of mature content, including sexy talk and clothing, and users' comments are often predatory and explicit. Also, its focus on status and spending money, as opposed to creativity and talent, makes it feel shallow.

Like - Magic Music Video Editor

Similar to the video lip-synching service Tik Tok, Like lets you create short videos that often involve lip-synching. You can also follow other

users, climb a leaderboard (based on how many likes you've gotten), send direct messages, and send virtual gems -- that cost real money -- to other users.

What parents need to know

Also like Tik Tok, Like features mature music and dancing and allows strangers to interact. The leaderboard motif encourages kids to post frequently and gather likes -- basically to keep kids on the app longer and increase their circle of friends (which only benefits the company). So while it can be creative and fun, it's best used with strict privacy settings by teens who are savvy about keeping themselves safe online.

FOCUS: EVERY DAY COUNTS: Reasons for absences!

The three main reasons for absence are: 1. Sickness – There are always times when students need to miss school, such as when they are ill. It is vital that they are only away on the days they are genuinely sick, and setting good sleep patterns, eating well and exercising regularly can make a big difference. 2. Holidays - It is vital that holidays are planned during school holidays where possible, and not during the term if it can be avoided. 3. ‘Day off – Think twice before letting your child have a ‘day off’ for a birthday, shopping days or just staying home. Remember when your child is absent they could fall behind their classmates as every day counts!

If for any reason your child does not attend school, then you can work with our school to ensure he/she does not fall behind. Daily reading should always be completed if your child is at home.

Grade 5/6 Camp Video

Our Grade 5/6 students had an amazing time on camp. We would like to thank all of our staff for giving up their time to take the students on camp. You can see images later in the newsletter and on our website.

Ride2school Day was on the 22nd of March 2019. The Bicycle Network came to our school to help - big thanks to the Bicycle Network!

The first event of the day was walking to school, there were places to meet and equipment to decorate with all sorts of glitter, garlands, confetti and much more. Everyone was amazed when they walked through the gates. People saw stands with smoothies and warm hot chocolate with big crowds of people. We heard the sound of music playing and people laughing and chatting with friends. I am sure that the smoothie stand was most popular because there was a humongous line of people waiting, plus it was no ordinary smoothie stand- there were these cool bikes with built in blenders so that when you peddled the smoothie started to blend! There were many delicious, fruity flavours. They where so bright and luminous in colour and very tasty. After the stands were packed up, there was a fun filled parade and prizes to be won for the best looking bike/scooter and the most active and energetic class. The prizes got donated by Velo Cycles and The Bicycle Network. Woolworths also donated up to 200 pieces of fruit to CGPS. Thank you so much for your support! Later we had an early assembly and that was when some brave kids from Grade 6 announced the lucky winners of the best looking bike/scooter /skates/skateboards, the winners were…

Amanda and Florian - Grade Prep Else and Evalie - Grade 1 Ryx and Marcus - Grade 2 Adam and Devanshi - Grade 3 Parth and Medhansh from Grade 4 Zoe and Pranavi - Grade 5 James and Molly - Grade 6

This day was one of the best days yet,I hope we do this next year! This will get us active and fit and will help the environment !!!!! - Lise 4A and Kira 4C

CGPS After-School Robotics (Term 2 2019)

TIME: 3:45pm to 4:45pm

LOCATION: Carlton Gardens PAC

COST: $200 for 8 sessions (Exc GST)

Maximum of 30 students

DATES: The grade 1-3 program will run every Thursday from the 9th of May to the 27th of June.

The grade 4-6 program will run every Wednesday from the 8th of May to the 26th of June.

**This is an important note for students who have already completed at least two terms

of a Robokids program**

For several weeks throughout the term, as well as learning more complex coding skills, returning students in grades

1-3 will build & program robots of their own design and returning students in 4-6 will be given design briefs that

require them to design, build & program robots that can perform a range of tasks (this is prototyping).

Grades 1 - 3

Robokids will be running our build and code after-school program for children in grades one, two and three.

Students will be using the Lego WeDo 2.0 robot kits and iPads. Each week the children will have the opportunity to

complete a new build and learn a new coding concept/skill. Perfect for kids who like to build, be creative and enjoy

figuring out how things work! No experience necessary.

Booking Link for Grades 1 - 3: https://www.trybooking.com/BBRUM

Grades 4 - 6

Children will work in pairs and use the advanced LEGO EV3 MINDSTORMS robots and software. During the initial

part of the course, students will focus on understanding how the individual components (sensors, motors, gears) of

the robots work and how to program them. Once the students demonstrate mastery of this, they will be presented

with more complex challenges that require multiple components functioning simultaneously. The programming

required for these challenges becomes significantly more complicated.
