Dear Parents,

Happy New Year! 2017 is off to a busy and productive start.

Some highlights for January so far have been the focused start students have made to the new term and the number of our sixth form students who have exciting offers from top universities, including Cambridge, Kings, Queen Mary and Birmingham.

A key theme for this term is challenge and we will be working with students to get them thinking about how they challenge themselves and each other. We will be considering the importance of effort and struggle and having really high expectations of ourselves and others. One aspect of this is our Attendance Challenge which will be running this term to remind students about the important link between progress and attendance.

Next week sees the start of this year’s parents’ evenings. Your daughter will be bringing home letters and appointment sheets for these evenings over the next term.

Finally, at this point in the year we begin to think about plans for next academic year. You will be receiving paper and electronic copies of a parent survey to make sure that we have your feedback on strengths and areas for development. Please look out for these.

Year 8 knitting club help the homeless of Hackney

For our attendance challenge we are challenging students to have 100% attendance for this half term.

Students will receive prizes and rewards for 100% attendance on a weekly basis.

20th January 2017

Year 8 knitting club have been knitting scarves and hats for homeless people in and around Hackney.

The club was started by Year 8 student Eliza Eaton. She shared her knitting skills with other students which proved popular enough to become a weekly club, which is now 15 members strong!

Local shop ‘Wild and Woolly’ donates wool to the students in return for their knitted wares which are then given out to homeless people.

Eliza said: “It’s nice that we have all got together and used our time to help others less fortunate than us.”

This A-level art piece based around ‘truth, fantasy and fiction’ was produced by ex-CGA student Ling Guo and has recently been installed in the main sixth form stairwell. Ling is now studying Computer Science at Queen Mary University London.

I’m Ben Fowler, Chair of Governors. It’s very enjoyable working with the exceptionally talented staff and students at Clapton.

Being a governor involves attending training and meetings, sometimes both on one day! On Wednesday we were in the Portico for our annual Governors Day. We received updates on key issues and discussed how we can support priorities. We’ll let you know what else governors have been involved in through regular Governors’ Corner updates.

Claptongirls’Academy @ClaptonGAA record 43 members of staff (and counting) have signed up for the @RunHackney Hackney Half Marathon! Go team CGA! #Charity #Teamwork

Over the last 6 months, we have been working closely with other students in the school to complete the ‘J.P.Morgan Schools Challenge.’

Before the summer we were given the task to come up with a functioning product that involved one working component and was made from at least 50% recycled material.

We took part in a range of two hour sessions in which we developed our product further. Throughout the project we were thoroughly supported by our extremely kind J.P.Morgan volunteers who helped us to come up with a pitch to finally present our product to the judges in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic park.

We were very proud of our performance and although we didn’t get into the finals we all really enjoyed the whole experience. We learnt all about the real world; pitching products, sustainability, and just coming up with ideas. The final day was really fun, from eating bugs to pitching our products. There were many activities and talks ending with a final talk from the one and only Professor Brian Cox. We even got a picture with him! It has been an incredible experience that we have all thoroughly enjoyed.

Work of the month

Korean VisitorsStudent maths teachers from South Korea chose CGA as the only British stop off on their European tour of maths departments.

They came to Europe on a completely self-funded trip to observe the differences between Korean and western teaching methods.

They said: “It has been really interesting observing lessons at Clapton Girls’ Academy, it has been very enjoyable and everyone has been very welcoming.”
