Central Frederick Winter 2016 - 2017

Greetings Central Frederick Neighbours!

Congratulations to the Hohner Avenue Porch Party (HAPP) organizers who won a $20,000 Capital Improvement Grant at the Festival of Neighbourhoods Finale! I am beyond thrilled that this deserving group took home the prize and can’t wait to see how this funding can enhance an already amazing neighbourhood. Follow on twitter @HohnerPorchParty to see what happens next!

Central Frederick Neighbourhood Association (CFNA) is always at the forefront of innovative community-building ideas. Case in point: Skill Share Pop-Up events. What a great way to meet your neighbours and gain new skills! The last event featured tips and tricks for public speaking. Upcoming events will teach you about felting and painting. As a reminder, find out the latest CFNA news and events on the Facebook page: facebook.com/CentralFrederick/

Do you have a bored teenager at home? Why not send them to Youth Board Game Night at the Downtown Community Centre on the last Friday of each month! This free program runs 7 to 9 PM and includes snacks in a safe and accessible environment.

Finally, not that you could have missed it – but have you checked out the crosswalk at Lancaster and Chapel? If you think crosswalks have to be boring, think again. This crosswalk is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

City of Kitchener crew installing the new sunshine crosswalk at Chapel and Lancaster— it was a school PD day, so neighbours gathered to watch the work and enjoy popsicles together. Even the mayor came out to celebrate!

Central Frederick Winter 2016 - 2017

Hello everyone!

With winter on its way, I look forward to fires in the fireplace and beautiful falling snow coating the trees outside.

This fall turned out to be an exciting one! From the wonderfully sunny new crosswalk installed at Chapel and Lancaster to the start of the Skill Sharing workshops, ending with the Frederick Art Walk and the Hohner Ave Porch Party winning the $20,000 capital grant from the Festival of Neighbourhoods! It is going to be great seeing what ideas the neighbourhood is going to come up to do with the grant.

Shortly after the crosswalk was installed, the new 40km/h speed limit signs were as well. Lancaster from Victoria to Krug is now a 40km/h zone. I think the sub-committee still has a few more ideas to help calm our streets, though, so get in touch if you have some, or want to help out!

A few neighbours came together to build the Community Boards that have now been installed in Weber Park and Gordon Park. Many thanks to those who came out!

Skill Sharing workshops will continue and we are looking to those in the community to let us know about skills or hobbies that you would like to share with your neighbours.

Do you have a winter event that you would like to have, or need some help to make it happen? Contact us to see how we can help. Check out the rest of this newsletter and more info on our website and Facebook page.

Have a happy winter everyone!

Central Fred Trading Post on Facebook

The best ‘R’ word, of the “three R’s,” is reduce! So, with the mindset to share, lend, trade, find, or even sell, the material things we have in our homes—while reducing waste and building our community—The Central Frederick Trading Post is a Facebook group where members can support each other and our amazeballs neighbourhood.

You can share posts of your amazing curbside finds (someone might really want that IKEA Kallax shelf before it rains) or items from your latest purge. (Little Tikes trike anyone? Or trade that bottle of cab sauv for a pinot gris.) New families are always coming in and growing in our ‘hood, and those baby things could really come in handy for a new parent. (And when you meet up on the Brubacher Green, you’ll already have broken the ice.) Post and find someone to share that bushel of peppers from the Market; or share the sofrito you made with it. All you need to do is search for The Central Frederick Trading Post.

Festival of Neighbourhoods Grant

Have you heard? The Hohner Avenue Porch Party won the $20,000 capital grant at the Festival of Neighbourhoods finale event! There will be an involved community process to decide how to spend the money.

Here are some next steps:

1. A staff person from the city will be working with our neighbourhood to help take our grant project from idea (many ideas!) to reality.

2. The first meeting will include a city staff member, a Festival of Neighbourhoods representative, and John McDonald, a local architect and one of the founders/sponsors of this initiative.

3. At this first meeting, we will go over how this grant process works and what the next steps will be.

After we learn what to do expect the process, we will reach out to the community to discuss possible ideas. Start dreaming, Central Frederick!! What can we do to enhance our community! There's so many great possibilities.

If you'd like to stay informed, email us to join our e-newsletter and/or follow our Facebook.
