Mt Alberts close community spirit kicked into action recently when a burglar was caught red-handed and captured by a group of locals. The incident happened in broad daylight when the owner of the burgled house returned home while the intruder was still inside.

Although startled and in shock he managed to chase the burglar down the street. Quick-thinking neighbours joined in the pursuit and finally captured the offender outside the back of our office on Alberton Ave. A group of them pinned him to

the ground until the police arrived and put him in hand-cuffs. Thanks to the quick-thinking efforts of those involved the offender was caught and is being dealt with by the law. As he was taken away by police kicking and screaming there was a rapturous round of applause from the crowd that had gathered and a real sense of achievement was felt by all.

It was only recently at a Residents Association meeting that locals were urged to be more vigilant when it comes to security. Following an increase in burglaries across the

district police are encouraging residents to use burglar alarms with monitoring systems. • What does a normal day look like for a photographer? I start the day by checking emails and website to check that all photographs uploaded overnight are available for Agent access. Check and pack up my gear before heading off for the first shoot. After the last shoot head back home to the office to start processing.

Depending on the number of properties youve photographed that day this can result in a very late night. A normal evening would end about 10pm.

How did you get into your profession? Ive been involved in photography since my teens, with a particular interest in wildlife and landscapes. On moving to Auckland my wife and I developed a love of real estate as well. The two just came together when I saw an ad one day, about 11 years ago, where Open2view was looking for photographers. Anne was one of my first clients.

Best thing about your job? I do what I love doing. Taking photographs and looking at property. It also allows me, within reason, to schedule my own days to do the other things we do.

Most memorable moments good or bad? The feeling you get when

you know that youve done a great job and helped the agent get the best price for the vendor. Agents who havent really caught up with life and dont understand why there should be a cost attached to professional photography. This does not apply to Anne Duncans office where everyone uses professional photography.

How do you unwind? Spending time with my wife and girls, visiting our bach on the Coromandel. Although we dont get there often enough.

Favourite holiday destination? USA I love the open spaces and the friendliness of Americans. Particularly areas such as southern Utah, Arizona and Nevada. There are some wonderful desert landscapes and parks in these areas. The US is also very good value for money.

What advice would you give to people considering a career as a

photographer? Just buying a flash camera isnt going to cut it. Its a long hard slog to get established and build a reputation for quality and service. If youre passionate, go for it but be prepared to spend a lot of time with little income until you have a good client base. If youre looking for quick rewards, do something else.

Dennis has lived or worked in many parts of the world, ranging from Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia where he had a very successful safari company to the UK before moving to NZ.

His background is varied; having been in the army, gone down abandoned mineshaft collecting crystals, worked for Namibian Breweries, Construction, North Sea oil rigs, Photographic and ornithological safaris, retail and finally Open2view.

May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live

A Farmers Market on your doorstep

A LITTLE CORNER of Mt Albert comes alive on a Saturday morning and is bustling with locals doing their weekly shop.

The Farmers Market is a colourful and vibrant place to be with lots on offer for everyones taste buds. Its the place where friends meet up for a coffee and a chat and neighbours catch up on the latest news.

Since it first started over a year ago this quirky little market has become a haven for the community and offers a chance to sample the best of fresh, local culinary delights in a relaxed atmosphere.

People travel in from other suburbs to support the independent traders who offer a wide range of artisan products at reasonable prices. Fresh baked bread, just laid eggs, organic meats and fish and a huge range of fruit and veg are just some of the foods on offer every week.

Quality coffee is also a major draw for the regulars and the acoustic sets performed by young local musicians adds to the ambience of this community market.

Organisers say theyre delighted with the response and feedback from the community and hope the market will go from strength to strength. With the number of visitors growing every week and word getting round, its certain to be a long-term fixture

in the suburb. The great thing is that being located under the canopy of the old petrol station means that come rain or shine its a great way to spend your Saturday morning.

Mt Albert Farmers Market, 847 New North Rd. Every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Other markets include La Cigale in Parnell, Hobsonville, Coatesville, Matakana & Avondale.

THE MT ALBERT Aquatic Centre is now closed for some much-needed renovations and is expected to take up to four months to be fully completed.

A total renovation is underway with repairs to the roof, walls, pools, changing rooms and floors taking place. The 25m pool will be the first to re-open its doors around July 20th to coincide with the beginning of school term three.
