Origin• The IRA was formed to

drive English authorities out of northern Ireland in 1969

• The IRA was a force of men and women that used gorilla warfare to strike hard and leave an impression

• They were fighting to unionize both the Northern Ireland counties to the Southern Ireland counties

• They Continued their fighting until 1998 when a cease fire was issued

Tactics

• The IRA would target buildings, government officials, military out post, prisons, and court houses.

• They would assassinate, fight, bomb, smuggle, kidnap, rob, and kill to drive the English out of Northern Ireland

• They went through all costs to accomplish their goal

Cease Fire

• On August 31, 1994 the leadership of IRA announced their complete cessation of military operations as our contribution to the search for lasting peace.

• After 17 months of cessation in which the British government and the unionists blocked any possibility of real or inclusive negotiations, we reluctantly abandoned the cessation.

• Now the divided nation is at peace but there are still struggles in an effort to unite the county of Ireland into its own free country.
