Continuing education (CE) of health professionals is essential to the health. With accelerating advances in health information and technology, physicians, nurses, and other health professionals must maintain and improve their knowledge and skills throughout their careers in order to provide safe, effective, and high quality healthcare for their patients.

The method of delivery of continuing education can include traditional types of classroom lectures and laboratories. However, many continuing education programs make heavy use of distance learning, which not only includes independent study, but can also include videotaped/CD-ROM material, broadcast programming or Online Education which has more recently dominated the distance learning community.

Industries are constantly changing. Continuing education is required for workers to stay current with the latest developments, skills, and new technologies required for their fields. Certain professions also require continuing education to comply with laws, remain licensed or certified, or maintain membership in an association or licensing body. Overall, continuing education is considered a way for professionals to keep abreast of their fields so they don’t lag behind.

An important aim of continuing education is to improve professional practice so that patients can receive improved health care. Educational meetings and printed educational materials are the most common types of continuing education for health professionals. Educational meetings include lectures, workshops and courses. The meetings can be highly variable in terms of content, number of participants, the degree and type of interaction, length and frequency. Other activities used for quality improvement and professional development, like audit and feedback, educational outreach and continuous quality improvement, may include educational meetings.
