Life at CESL My name is JieMei Zhang. Everyone calls me “Jamie”. I am originally from China. I worked at CESL for al- most three years. I was a Student Activity Coordina- tor Assistant. My job was to plan for wonderful activ- ities around Tucson to help students to relax and to practice English at the same time. I love my job! I really wish I could work there forever. I was a stu- dent at the University of Arizona and I majored in Nursing. I graduated in December 2012, and was recently married. I will, hopefully, become an RN at the University of Arizona Medical Center. I hope to see everyone again, how- ever, not in the hospital :) ______________________ Patrick Su Wang I am Patrick and I am from China. I study dance at the University of Arizona. I studied English at CESL for about one year. I just started my university clas- ses this semester and started working at CESL. The school for me is won- derful! Studying at the University of Arizona is a totally different experi- ence. I have a lot of new knowledge that I had nev- er dreamed of before. My dance class is going well and I am practicing things I have never previously tried. I can study whatever I am interested in studying at this university. This sur- prised me very much. It helps me to develop my- self fully. I would say that I like this university and I like America. The best and most surpris- ing thing is that I was of- fered a job at CESL. I am a Student Activities Worker, which is my dream job and my first job in the USA. On my job I can meet people from many different coun- tries and make new friends. It is a lot of fun to plan activities for students. When I studied at CESL I used to participate in many activities and now I am helping to plan them! Featured Local Programs We are wrapping up our class with St. Gregory School, where a CESL teacher goes to teach international students there.

Our classes continue with Ref-ugee Focus, where a tutor goes twice a week and leads small group sessions.

We recently finished a pro-gram with Continental in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico

We held conversation classes for visiting international engi-neers in Aerospace & Mechani-cal Engineering.

Tutoring Options CESL offers many kinds of tutoring to students, including: Individual tutoring for

many skills and levels(pronunciation, grammar, TOEFCL, etc.)

Small-group workshops for test prep and other skills

Feedback from a tutoring stu-dent: “I improved my English a lot during my tutoring and had a lot of positive experiences in a foreign culture, so I can whole-heartedly recommend CESL tutoring to other people.”

Global Programs Updates This spring we were busier than ever with our teacher training programs in high demand. We continued to run our basic online teacher training with students in Chungnam, South Korea. We also began a new online teacher training program with 14 teachers in Zacatecas, Mexico. They will soon be mov-ing on to the advanced online course. We once again expect to host a group of Fulbright Pre-Academic students here at CESL this summer. A group of seven CESL instruc-tors will travel to Guangzhou, China again this coming sum-mer to offer basic and ad-vanced face-to-face teacher training certificate programs. CESL will provide online teach-er training to 25 teachers from Hermosillo, Mexico beginning in May. This is a hybrid, face-to-face and online program. Look for updates on the above programs and more exciting program developments in the next CESL Voice newsletter!

Local News

CESL just re-ceived a grant from the Com-mission on the Status of Women to start an Inter-national Wom-en’s Club in con-junction with partners on cam-pus. We look forward to devel-oping this club to help our stu-dents and other international women on cam-pus connect.

________________

CESL hosted gradu-ate interns from the English Lan-guage & Linguistics program, and an undergraduate pre-ceptor who served as a conversation partner to our stu-dents. These indi-viduals gained im-portant educational experiences and also enriched the experiences of our students.
