Properties of Fibers:Appearance-colour, luster, shape, surface contours, length, diameter.Performance- Strength, specific gravity, flexibility, elasticity, absorbency, electrical conductivity, dimensional stability, flammability, effect of heat.Maintenance- Effects of biological organisms, chemical conditions, environmental conditions.

3 Tests forIdentificationof Fibers

Identification of man made and natural fibers: burning test, microscopictest, and chemical test.

Exercises:

Ex.1 Try to distinguish between natural and manmade fibers, and make a list of the two. Listten different articles of apparel in your home, note from their labels the kind(s) of fiberfrom which each are made, and indicate the fiber trademarks, if any.

Ex.2 Obtain as many samples of fabrics as you can, and cut them into small square pieces.Mount them on small cards. Determine the fiber content of each sample, and record yourdata on the card. Give all possible uses for each fabric. Give the reasons for your answersin terms of the basic qualities of the fibers.

Ex.3 Do the burning test for Cotton, Wool, silk and nylon fibers, and prepare a chart of theburning characteristics of the fibers. Examine a wool, cotton and silk fiber under themicroscope. Draw the fiber as you see it. Do a chemical test and write the observations foridentification of wool, cotton and silk fiber.

Straight / horizontal lines  Thick / thin lines  Wavy lines  Zig-zag lines  Straight vertical lines  Diagonal lines

Ex.2 Draw a scrawly pattern, filling the spaces with dots and lines creating different tints andshades. Use separate sheets for each medium (pencil, poster colours and pens).

Ex.3 In an 8” by 8” square white format, use lines of the same thickness (the length couldvary), to depict a feeling or a word (e.g. loneliness, motion, charity, surprise etc.). Thelines should be in black.

UNIT–3: Placement of Design

Sub-Unit

Video Title Details

1 Concept of Placement of

Designs

Lines put together make a shape. For example: When a circle isrepeated often a motif is created which can be used for placement.

2 Different Typesof Placement of Design-I

Importance of placement for a design, right placements can dowonders for a design.

3 Different Typesof Placement of Design-I

Creating different placements, for woven as well as surface designedones.

Exercises:

Ask the students to make 3 different motifs: 1 floral head, 1 monument, 1 geometrical.No. of each motif should be placed in all the different kinds of placements. The above motifs can be placed differently:Ex.1  A) Equidistant (placement is when there is equal distance between each motif on all

sides), B)Half drop (brick layout or close half drop).Ex.2 A) Checks (vertical, diagonal), B) Stripes (vertical, horizontal & diagonal).Ex.3 A) All over placement is when the motif is placed in such a manner that there is no

particular direction, B) Weave method.

UNIT–4: Types of Designs

Sub-Unit

Video Title Details

1 Introduction toDifferent Typesof Designs

Understanding of various types of designs: Traditional and Modern,Realistic and Abstract, Folk and Symbolic.

2 Traditional

Designs

Traditional Designs

3 Centre LinePatterns

Centre line patterns: is a pattern in which all lines begin and end atthe centre line. This can be obtained by putting a carbon sheet of paperand the design can be drawn so both sides of paper get the samedesign.

Exercises:

Ex.1 Ask the students to experiment with carbon paper and different types of centre linedesign. After doing about 10 of them on 1/4 imperial rough sheets, one of them can bedone on full imperial cartridge sheet. This should be repeated by tracing it in a borderand then painted in two colours.Paisleys: Paisley is a traditional shape used in designing.

Traditional designs can also be made from flowers, birds, stems and 1eaves having agrape vine movement, fishes, shells, webs, animals and human figures.Geometrical design: having relation in traditional  design as in Tantric art which issymbolic art. This design represents the sun which has been taken from geometrical shape.

Ex.2 Ask the students to take pictures from magazines which have scenes of faces etc. Cutthese pictures and rearrange them so that they do not look realistic. The effect of abstract design will then be created. The scrawly pattern is also an abstract design.

Ex.3 Ask the students to take different animals and depict them in folk style. This should bepainted in such way that the background is also part of the design. Folk art: issymbolic art where the forms are mostly geometrical or simplified, in shape

UNIT-5: Value of Space

Video Title Details

1 Positive and Composition of Negative space and Positive space.

13

Negativespaces

2 The Importanceof Background

Using background: before doing any composition on any design onemust realize the space given and then design accordingly.

3 Creating aBalanced

Background is the negative part and the design is the positive part. Half of the space should be negative and the other half should be positive,

understanding this concept.

Ex.1 Ask students to make a composition with 4 different kinds of leaves. On 1/4 imperial sheetthe design should be drawn first and then painted in 3 colour.

Ex.2 1/4 imperial sheet the same design should be drawn and here the background should bepainted in the same three colours and the design left blank. After doing this exercise theywill realize the relation between negative and positive. Another aspect of the value of space is to place the design according to the space given.

Ex 3 Let the students make a composition with flowers and ask them to place it in a given areaof 6" x 6" They should try and use the space by placing the flowers in different ways.
