Beginning with the Institute for Empirical Research in Political Economy (IERPE), which was founded in 2004 and inspired the creation of ASE, the school has emerged as a leading research hub in Africa. ASE’s four research institutes—the Institute for Empirical Research in Political Economy (IERPE), the Development Research Lab (DRL), the Institute for Finance and Management (IFM), the Institute for African Studies (IAS)—have completed 49 research projects in 9 countries, with significant contributions from ASE students. Key ongoing projects include: Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE): Five multi-year projects in Nigeria that focus on how demand for improved learning drives educational systems change (IERPE); Training for Financial Inclusion: Experimental Evidence from Benin: A randomized controlled trial that examines how ASE’s original Personal Finance Tracking app and training affect financial inclusion (DRL and IFM); Social Impact of the Amazons of Danxomè: This ground-breaking study analyzes Benin’s women warriors and surveys their families (IAS).ASE is also developing an Institute for Biotechnology and Agricultural Science (IBSA), which will soon launch. Students have the opportunity to learn the latest research insights and to present their own work in the regular international conferences hosted by ASE. For example, in 2018 ASE hosted the Africa Meeting of the Econometric Society, which featured Nobel Laureate Dr. Roger Myerson.

Dr. Leonard Wantchekon grew up in Benin, escaped from jail in 1986 after being wrongfully held as a political prisoner, and followed his dream of becoming a leading economist worldwide.

This beautiful dream came true when Leonard Wantchekon earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Northwestern University (1995) and then became a faculty member at Yale University (1995-2001). From Yale, Dr. Wantchekon served as faculty at New York University (2001-2011). From 2011 to the present, Prof. Wantchekon has been a Professor of Politics, International Affairs and Economics at Princeton University. He is also the Vice President of the American Political Science Association and a member of the Executive Committee of the International Economic Association. Prof. Wantchekon is the first African social scientist elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, which is one of the oldest learned societies in the United States. He is also the first African elected to the Econometric Society, which advances economic theory using statistical and mathematical techniques.

Le Prof Léonard Wantchékon, qui a grandi au Bénin, s‘est échappé en 1986 après avoir été détenu à tort comme prisonnier politique, et a suivi son rêve de devenir un économiste de premier plan dans le monde ;

Le rêve est devenu réalité lorsqu’il a obtenu son doctorat en économie à l‘Université Northwestern (1995), puis est devenu Professeur à l‘Université Yale (1995-2001). De Yale, le Prof. Wantchékon a été professeur à l‘Université de New York (2001-2011). Depuis 2011, il est professeur à l‘Université de Princeton. Il est également vice-président de l‘American Political Science Association et membre du comité exécutif de l‘Association économique internationale.

Le professeur Wantchékon est le premier scientifique africain en sciences sociales élu à l‘Académie américaine des arts et des sciences, qui est l‘une des plus anciennes sociétés savantes aux États-Unis. Il est également le premier Africain élu à l‘Econometric Society, qui fait progresser la théorie économique à l‘aide de techniques de statistiques et de mathématiques rigoureuses.
