Swinburne Technical College

The college was· founded in 1908 as the Eastern SuburbsTechnical College and took its first students in 1909. Itadopted the name (Swinburne' in 1913 to commemoratethe Hon. George Swinburne, a former Mayor of Hawthornand member of the Parliament of Victoria, whose energieswere largely responsible for the establishment of thecollege.

The objects of the college are (to improve educationgenerally and, especiallY,-to promote technical education.The college offers middle-level or sub-professional andtrade courses and a sixth form or tertiary orientationprogram as well as specialized courses as requested byindustry.

The College coat of arms is an heraldic representation ofthe link between the Swinburne family and theeducational objectives of the college.
