Porcelain tiles make an excellent choice for a floor covering because they are

tough and durable and can take substantial amounts of foot traffic, while also being very easy to maintain. They retain their appearance and

remain in good condition for many years, and are

scratch resistant with qualities similar to those of

natural stone.

They absorb very little water, are resistant to

abrasion and their colours remain vibrant due to

their being embedded throughout the tile when

they’re being made. Porcelain tiles are also a sustainable product, as

they are produced from clay and water that is fired at very high temperatures, can be recycled into other

building materials and don’t contain any waxes or other

chemicals.

Both matt and textured porcelain tiles can be used in high traffic areas in the home or anywhere it’s important to

have a non-slip finish, and so are often found in outdoor living areas, and in pool surrounds or wet areas.

A highlight of the Durastone range is their polished porcelain tiles, ideally suited to spaces in the home where they can be showcased as a design feature. They’re produced from high-grade materials that produce an inherently shiny finish that adds light and lustre to any room, and when installed in lighter tones, also help to give an illusion of space.

However, it’s important to note that polished porcelain tiles will not create a mirror finish, but will rather display variations under certain lights in particular conditions, which is known as optical hazing. This does not represent a flaw in the manufacture of the tiles or a result of the materials used, but is rather a characteristic and feature of the tiles.

The shine on polished porcelain tiles is produced when the surface of the tile is polished with a hard grinding

stone (similar to the process used to polish granite and marble), which opens up small pores on its surface which then reflect light in different ways, which creates the variation or ‘haze.’ If sealer on the surface of the tiles is thicker in places, this too can produce what might look like a variation in the shininess, but again this is typical of polished porcelain tiles and isn’t a sign of a flaw or problem.

Stain resistant

Durastone porcelain tiles are sealed with a penetrating sealer so as to make them largely resistant to staining, although it is

nevertheless important to clean them promptly and thoroughly should you have a spillage, or they get dirt or mud on them—hot

water and a neutral detergent, followed by a thorough rinsing will generally do the job. A penetrating sealer does not, however,

affect the appearance or slip resistance of porcelain tiles, while helping to make everyday maintenance and cleaning much

simpler.
