Genesis of the Ceramic Armor Subgroup
• In 2000, a separate Center was formed at Rutgers entitled:“High Fidelity Design and Processing of Advanced Armor Ceramics: A U.S. Army Research Laboratory Material Center of Excellence” – providing 6 funded projects
• A component of this ARL funded program was to implement technology transfer to industries involved in Ceramic Armor
• In January 2001 a 1 day Workshop was held at Rutgers, ½ day Technical Session with Industry and ½ day on needs of Industry. (30+ Companies were invited, 21 Companies attended)
• The Spring IUCRC IAB was approached to discuss the formation of a Ceramic Armor Subthrust. Approval was provided and RFP to faculty was announced.

Genesis of the Ceramic Armor Subgroup (cont.)
• 30 proposals were submitted from Faculty.• At the Fall 2001 IUCRC IAB meeting a separate One Day Subgroup
Meeting was held, with current and prospective members invited.• The 30 proposals were prioritized and regrouped into a final 5
projects. The IAB approved the funding of these projects based upon interest of existing members and interest of potential members.
• Projects were initiated in 2002. • 12 new members have joined the Center specifically for the Armor
Subgroup.• Funding has grown to allow for 7 projects• 1 Day Armor Subgroup meetings are held preceeding Spring and
Fall IAB meetings• 8 prospective members are being recruited by the Center
