TM CERACOL is a homogenized powder, the main ingredient being Di-Calcium Hexaborate

Use Boron in Ceramics, Frits & Glazes

Boron has long been recognized as one of the main constituents of ceramic glazes.

The functions of the boric oxide in glaze formulations are:

ü Regulating the thermal expansion coefficient of the glaze and thus ensuring a good

thermal fit between the glaze and the body.

ü Initiating the glaze formulation in the early stages of melting.

ü Improving the refractive index of the glaze increasing the lustre and improving the

overall appearance.

ü Reducing the viscosity and surface tension enabling the rapid maturing of the glaze

and the formation of a smooth surface.

ü Increasing the mechanical strength and the scratch resistance.

ü Improving the durability and resistance to aqueous and chemical attack.

In addition to glazes, boron is also used in ceramic tile bodies and sanitary ware body formulations.

The main benefits of boron addition in body formulations are:

ü Reducing the firing cycle thus increasing the throughput

ü Reducing the tile thickness

ü Reducing the firing temperature thus producing energy saving

ü Increasing the dry mechanical strength

Application & Benefits

TMCERACOL finds application in glaze formulations and tile and sanitary ware body formulations.

TMDepending on the characteristics of the local raw materials used, CERACOL has the following advantages:

TMü CERACOL can lower the melting temperature of glaze up to 100°C. TM TMü CERACOL can be used in glaze formulations to replace Na-Feldspar. About 15% CERACOL can replace 40% of Na-

Feldspar in glaze composition. TMü CERACOL can be added up to 5% in tile body formulations resulting a decrease in firing temperature and good mechanical

properties. TMü CERACOL added up to 2% in sanitary ware formulations results a decrease in maturing temperature up to 50°C and widens

the range of verification.
