Use Boron in Ceramics, Frits & Glazes Boron has long been recognized as one of the main constituents of ceramic glazes. The functions of the boric oxide in glaze formulations are: ü Regulating the thermal expansion coefficient of the glaze and thus ensuring a good thermal fit between the glaze and the body. ü Initiating the glaze formulation in the early stages of melting. ü Improving the refractive index of the glaze increasing the lustre and improving the overall appearance. ü Reducing the viscosity and surface tension enabling the rapid maturing of the glaze and the formation of a smooth surface. ü Increasing the mechanical strength and the scratch resistance. ü Improving the durability and resistance to aqueous and chemical attack. The main benefits of boron addition in body formulations are: ü Reducing the firing cycle thus increasing the throughput ü Reducing the tile thickness ü Reducing the firing temperature thus producing energy saving ü Increasing the dry mechanical strength Application & Benefits TM CERACOL finds application in glaze formulations and tile and sanitary ware body formulations. TM Depending on the characteristics of the local raw materials used, CERACOL has the following advantages: TM ü CERACOL can lower the melting temperature of glaze up to 100°C.
