Intaka Island’s Outreach programme takes off

Welcome to the second edition of City Edits, Century City’s very own new look magazine.

a city within a city Century City is a city within a city and as such it generates and attracts significant vehicular traffic. To assist the City of Cape Town in controlling and managing traffic behaviour and flows, the Century City Property Owners’ Association has contracted two law enforcement officers. These officers issued no less than 1425 tickets last year, totalling more than R1million, for stationary traffic and vehicle offences. Their efforts have now been bolstered by the appointment of a dedicated traffic officer who is also able to issue fines for moving violations. This officer will also assist in managing traffic congestion and do point duty if and when traffic signals malfunction.

We should, however, expect to experience a certain amount of traffic congestion at peak hours. We are working closely with city officials to fine tune signal timings to optimise traffic flows.

In addition, the Rabie Property Group, – the principal developers of Century City, are constantly evaluating the macro traffic/transport model for Century City to effect improvements.

Property prices at Century City have broken new ground with the recent sale of a four-bedroom furnished penthouse apartment in Crystal Towers to a foreign buyer for R13,5million.

Prior to this the highest price achieved for a property was for a freestanding home on a double plot in Waterstone Isles, which sold for R10million late last year. Before that the highest prices achieved were for two Crystal Towers three-bedroom apartments that sold for R8,2million each. Testament to the wide variety of homes on offer at Century City is that the average selling price is around R1,5million to R2million, with entry level being around the R1million mark.

The 400 square metre Crystal Towers apartment that sold for R13,5million comprises four bedrooms, four bathrooms, two lounges, a kitchen and scullery, an outdoor entertainment area with built in braai and jacuzzi, three parking bays and a storeroom. The two-level north-facing apartment boasts panoramic views of Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, Robben Island and Durbanville Hills.

Allen Usher of Property World, the official on-site agents at Century City, said these sales helped boost total sales at Century City by them to just under R260million since the start of the current financial year on July 1 last year. In March alone Property World secured nine development sales (excluding the R13,5million penthouse) and six resales for a total value of R24,5million - a marked improvement on March 2011 when they notched up 11 sales for a total of R18million.

He said with the sale of the top penthouse apartment there were now only 10 apartments out of 92 left for sale in Crystal Towers. These comprise eight two-bedroom apartments priced at around R3,5million each, a three-bedroom, furnished penthouse at R7,5million and a one-bedroom, furnished penthouse at R3,4million.

Sales had also gone strongly in their development Quayside where only 11 units out of 63 remain to be sold at prices of around R1,5million, with transfer scheduled for end of next year, offering exceptional value for money.

r518 000 raised for sinenjongoA number of Century City residents, including a 12-strong team from Rabie Property Group, participated in this year’s Platteklip Charity Challenge to raise funds for charity.

The Challenge involves running up Table Mountain’s Platteklip Gorge in a 5,5km loop as many times as possible between dawn and dusk.

This year the organisers chose Sinenjongo High School in Joe Slovo Park down the road from Century City as the beneficiary of the funds. Sinenjongo, which was adopted by the Rabie Property Group as the major beneficiary of its Corporate Social Investment programme six years ago, has undergone a major turnaround in recent years to become one of the top 10 most improved schools in terms of matric results. Every cent of the money raised by the Challenge will go towards paying the salaries of additional teachers and to fund educational programmes at the school.

Kotov first masters home in two oceansThree times Comrades winner Vladimir Kotov, who runs in Century City colours, was the first over-50 Masters runner home in the 2012 Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon.

Kotov, a founder member of the Century City Athletic Club, ran the ultra marathon in a time of 3 hours 32 minutes and 47 seconds, just one minute slower than his 2008 race when he was placed in the top 10. Not only was Kotov the first Masters runner home this year but he was also the fourth Western Province runner. Kotov said he was very happy with his performance in extremely bad weather. “I started off slowly and just paced myself and managed to beat many other top runners, which was gratifying.” He said the Two Oceans had been a good training for him for the Comrades, which takes place on 3 June.

new private school for century cityListed private school company, Curro Holdings, announced recently that it is to develop a new school at Century City, to open January 2013.

The Group currently operates 16 schools around the country, including Western Cape campuses in Durbanville, Langebaan and Hermanus. Curro currently enrols more than 8500 learners countrywide and plans to have 20 campuses by 2013.

Curro Century City, which will be the group’s fifth school in the Western Cape, is its first new concept “City school”. As such it will have a bigger academic focus than the traditional, larger Curro campuses, but will also boast a large variety of sports, including tennis courts and a multi-purpose sports field. It will initially operate from Grade RR through to Grade 4 and will phase in Grades 5, 6 & 7 to ensure continuity for learners.

“Pending learner demand and growth, Curro will consider extending the planned campus to a fully fledged, integrated campus including a high school in the future. century city connect signs first four ISPsCentury City Connect, the open access Fibre-to-the-Premises network, believed to be a first of its kind on the African continent and now available within the Century City precinct, has signed up the first four Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to its carrier-neutral network.

Century City Connect is providing the country’s fastest “last mile” open access network, enabling selected Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to offer those living and working in the precinct a variety of customized packages including the fastest voice, broadband and multi-media services.

Director Greg Deans said agreements signed so far include, inter alia, MTN Business, Frogfoot Networks and Altech Technologies, with further signatories imminent.

“Those living and working in Century City are now able to choose an ISP and customised package that best suits their needs and pockets, and will not have to be locked into a long term contract with an ISP if they are unhappy with the service they receive .”

Deans said Century City Connect has laid a circular fibre optic backbone around Century City and commissioned its Optical Exchange Node, where the selected ISPs host their services. In addition it has completed three distribution builds - taking fibre from the backbone into different precincts - and these builds have provided network coverage to about 200 businesses as well as Little Moorings, the first residential development at Century City to go live on the network.

So far 12 buildings within Century City, including the 9000m2 Colosseum mixed-use development, Crystal Towers, Estuaries 1 and 2, Waterford House and the offices of the Century City Property Owners’ Association, have been connected.

Deans said negotiations with a number of other ISPs were well advanced and they expected more than half of the estimated 400 businesses and most residential complexes located within the precinct to be linked to the network within the next few years.

Intaka IslandGrysbok spotted at century city!One of two Grysbok released into the Intaka Island wetlands reserve in Century City two years ago was recently photographed in the marshlands by a regular visitor, Len van Wyk.

The re-introduction of the Grysbok – a female and a younger male – to the Intaka Island wetlands conservation area in June 2010 followed a lengthy approval process and was fully supported by Cape Nature, the City of Cape Town’s Nature Conservation Department and the Blouvlei/Intaka Island Environmental Committee.

The Grysbok were captured at the Royal Ascot conservation area and released into the thickets between the ephemeral pans and the marshlands.

Century City Environmental Manager Alan Liebenberg said the Grysbok were nocturnal animals choosing to spend most of the day sheltering under bushes and are more active between dusk and dawn.

“They are also solitary animals, with the female choosing to spend most of her time in the salt pans and the male in the marshlands, but we have recently found two sets of spoors close to each other, which indicate that they may have been mating.”

Intaka Island has been included in a Grysbok Project being undertaken by the Cape Town City Council to enable smaller nature reserves to keep Grysbok in a more sustainable way.

island girl Meet Leandri van der Vyver, the new coordinator of the Intaka Island Eco-Centre. Born and bred in Cape Town, Leandri has always had a love for the natural sciences and this led her to complete a bachelor and honours degree in Molecular Cell Biology at UCT. She then went on to complete her Postgraduate Certificate in Education, allowing her to teach biology, which she did for three years.

At the Eco-Centre, Leandri is involved in what she enjoys most: Biology, Conservation and Education. Together with the team at the Eco-Centre, Leandri is responsible for educating the visitors to Intaka Island, of which there are over 15 000 a year, about the diversity of Intaka’s 16ha wetland and bird sanctuary as well as providing information about sustainable living practices.

When Leandri is not working, she’s partaking in endurance horse riding and taking her Border Collie, Jamie, for a run. She enjoys reading classic novels and South African literature and like most of us, a glass of good red wine with good company.

Conquering Platteklip Gorge is no easy feat. The trail covers a distance of 2.1km and features over 800 double-sized steps. Once is more than enough for most of us. But not for the field of around 100 in the K-Way Platteklip Charity Challenge. Athletes are challenged to ascend the gorge as many times as they can between sunrise and sunset. Funds raised benefit the local community and the more than R520000 raised this year will go to Sinenjongo High School in Joe Slovo Park.

One of this year’s participants was comedian Nik Rabinowitz and we asked him about his experience:How many summits did you make? Summits. You see that? Plural. Did they ask Sir Edmund Hillary how many summits he made? No. Those were the days when one summit was enough. So much expectation these days... What do you want from me?? What is this, a questionnaire or an interrogation? After one summit I pulled the paternity leave card. As far as physical challenges go, what would you equate this race to? This one was like a walk in a park, except a very steep uphill park. And a very long, painful walk.On the last stretch, what was going through your mind? God? Is that you?Your funniest moment of the day? Being mugged. Unless you mean like laughing funny, in which case it was when I came across a Constantia woman who thought she had altitude sickness.Any tips for those wanting to enter next year’s event? Platteklip in Afrikaans mean ‘flat rock’ - but don’t be deceived, the incline is in fact a little steeper than that. Also, vas is your friend.

While Nik has taken time out to focus on his family this year, his first book (co-authored with Gillian Breslin & published by PanMcmillan as part of The Youngsters series edited by Mandy Wiener) launches in June. Titled South Africa: Long Walk to a Free Ride, it’s self-described by the author as “like Madiba’s book of the similar title except that everything is different”. Also out later this year is his second DVD, Stand & Deliver.

Nik Rabinowitzon the K-WAY Platteklip Charity Challenge

ride-bys, piano lessons, and unrelenting love and financial support from family

members. Despite all this hardship he still managed to be moderately successful, achieving fame as the world’s foremost

Xhosa-speaking Jewish comedian.His career highlights include

representing Bafunny Bafunny at The Royal Albert Hall, appearing on BBC2’s

Mock the Week and spending a week with a goat at the Grahamstown Festival.

False or not, two perceptions about the financial services sector, accounting and auditing in particular, are still fairly prevalent: it is male-dominated and boring. A scandal, like the current JP Morgan multi-billion dollar loss or the Enron disaster a decade ago, elicits interest for a short while before most of us shift focus once more, all but oblivious to the aftermath. It is the aftermath, the investigation to find the facts behind the headlines, that is often the most fascinating, however.

Forensic accounting, just one aspect of forensic investigation, has as long and fascinating a history as money, dating back to ancient Egypt where scribes accounted for Pharoah’s assets, although it wasn’t until a Canadian case in 1817 - Meyer v. Sefton - that forensic accounting had its first day in court. In the 20th Century, the Lindbergh baby kidnapping case, the conviction of Al Capone, and WWII are just three examples where forensic investigation played an extensive role.

The 21st Century has barely begun and the complexity of modern business along with the escalation of cybercrime and cyber-vigilantism means the multi-disciplinary skills involved in effective forensic investigation are increasingly essential. It makes sense, therefore, for companies to provide a full range of forensic services - not only to resolve disputes and solve crimes, but to help companies prevent them happening in the first place. And there’s no doubt that to establish such a division, as Moore Stephens National Advisory did late last year, requires a team of uniquely skilled individuals.

Gillian Bolton and Preeya Ramjee, Directors of Forensic Services at Moore Stephens, work exceptionally well together. They pride themselves on ethics and discipline, characteristics essential

to the industry. Prior to being recruited by Moore Stephens, both women worked at Mazars: Gill as director and head in South Africa of Forensic Services and Preeya as Senior Forensic Consultant. Teamwork is particularly important in forensic investigation and Preeya considers her team dynamic with Gillian priceless. Preeya says

that not only has Gillian mentored her, she’s exposed her to invaluable experience in uncovering fraud and corruption. But both women bring remarkable qualifications and skills to the division they have only recently set up.

After visits to Devon & Foster’s (a well-known UK bakery and tea shop at the time) with her mother as a child, Gillian’s ambition was to waitress at the shop. In Standard 9 she was advised to pursue a career as a drama critic

or journalist. Instead, Gillian went on to obtain BA, LLB and MBA degrees, and a considerable number of Post-Graduate and other diplomas.

An admitted attorney and conveyancer of the High Court of South Africa, Gillian is also a solicitor (non-practising) of England and Wales, a Commercial Forensic Practitioner with South Africa’s Institute of Commercial Forensic Practitioners and a Fellow of the Association of Arbitrators (Southern Africa).

On the other hand, Preeya always knew she wanted to be a lawyer and now holds B.Proc and LLB degrees and a number of diplomas and certificates, from Effective Dispute Resolution to World Intellectual Property Law and International Advanced Computer Forensic Studies. Preeya is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa, an Associate Commercial Forensic Practitioner with the Institute of Commercial Forensic Practitioners, and an Associate of the Association of Arbitrators (Southern Africa).

Gillian spent over 20 years in the public sector, where she held various management and advisory positions, including as the first female Assistant City Administrator in the then administration, and being asked by then Minister of Sport, Steve Tshwete, to join the Cape Town 2004 Olympic Bid Committee. A defining moment of an already illustrious career was the establishment (at her suggestion) of a Forensic Unit to address fraud and maladministration in the City. After a sabbatical in 2005, Gillian was recruited to set up the Forensic Services division at Mazars.

Prior to taking up a position at Mazars, Preeya was, inter alia, Chief Financial Officer for the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board for six years, where part of her responsibilities included

Gillian and Preeya certainly give lie to the perceptions referred to at the start of this article. In fact, says Gillian, not only are more and more women being attracted to forensic investigation, they are often well suited to the profession.

Kenyan Maasai Warriors ride ratangaRatanga Junction recently played host to the 12-strong Kenyan Maasai Warriors cricket team, which was participating in the biennial Last Man Standing World Championships – an amateur global league.

The trip was an all-round first for the team, which is coached by a South African cricket player, Aliya Bauer. It was their first time to travel by air, their first trip out of Kenya, their first experience playing on a proper cricket pitch, and their first ever visit to a theme park.

Decked in their traditional attire - members are all herdsmen in Kenya and have only been playing cricket for a year - the team took to the Ratanga rides as if born to them.

The team took the opportunity while on tour to raise awareness for the HIV/Aids pandemic and other challenges in their country.
