EDITORIAL
Greetings from the Editorial Team!
This issue (October-December 2014) of the CUTM Newsletter coveres a host of events,
including the 2nd Convocation of the University with Dr. M.S. Swaminathan as the Chief Guest.
During this quarter, CUTM hosted two major conferences – Meaningful Education for the
Excluded and the 38th Indian Folklore Congress (IFC), both at the Paralakhemundi Campus.
These events made us realise the importance of revisiting and revising our initiatives in
education and development activities for the marginalised sections of the society, particularly the
tribal communities of the state. One major outcome was a decision to set up a Centre for Folklore
Studies at the Paralakhemundi Campus. A model village 'Abjangsing' was created and set up
inside the campus as a living museum to show case tribal art and artefacts.
President Dr. Mukti K. Mishra brought laurels to the University by being awarded the Quimpro
Education Award, making Centurion University to strive for newer benchmarks.
Gram Tarang, the innovative social entrepreneurship outfit of the University, has moved from
strength to strength with its newer training programmes and placement activities. It has signed
MOUs with some of the industry leaders such as GAP and Yamaha to carry forward industry-
integrated activities for enhancing employability of youth. This activity is in line with the
University’s endeavour in integrating skills with higher education.
Snapshots of activities under Culture, Sports and Responsibility, Faculty Development
Programs, Workshops and Visits of dignitaries to the University are also covered in this edition.

The Android Excursion – by Prof. Kalyan K. Banerjee
Thirty students of third year CSE students
from Jatni campus got together last quarter
to learn how to write Android applications.
Since knowledge of Java is a pre-requisite to
writing applications on Android, the
students first got together at a cosy, little
place, the CARD training centre, on the
lush, green foothills of the Eastern Ghats,
about 40 km from the Jatni campus. They
were mentored on Java applications by CSE
faculty, Prof. Rakesh Ray and Prof.
Sangram Swain, accompanied by Brahmani
of TPC and two industry practitioners from
Innovators’ Lab. It was an exciting learning
journey from breakfast till midnight, with
breaks for videos, cricket, football, quizzes
and panel discussions in between. And
bonding time, too, with 20 male students
along with “Arup, Sir” huddled in one room
and the ten girls in another. All this for
seven days from November 24th till
December 1st, with students creating Entity
Relationships and User Interface diagrams
in quick time, before running into the rough
and tough moments of writing real programs
that work.
The students divided themselves into eight
teams, and worked on eight projects. The
highlight of the event was the surprising
level of engagement of students who are
seldom seen in class. All progressed in the
learning journey, and were ready for the
next phase where Mr. Amit Sharma from
Edureka flew down from Delhi to teach
them programming on Android.
Centurion University of Technology and Management Page 23
The students and their faculty caught the
train to Pondicherry on 2nd December, and
spent the next week at Pegasus’ Learning
Centre doing their Android project with
Amit. The schedules remained the same, but
for the outbound programs that led to
inspiration and introspection, and some
cricket by the sea just before dusk every
day. And the days began with the wellness
sessions from Colonel Suresh that everyone
welcomed, despite many students struggling
to wake up early. Students returned
energized, not just with knowledge of
Android but with self-awareness and the
search for Purpose. The video on Vision led
them to the quest for their own Starfish
(metaphor for Purpose) – and coincidentally,
they found a real Starfish in the Bay of
Bengal.
And like the actor in the starfish video, they
threw it back into the sea! Back in campus,
students continue in their Android journey,
have created their learning plans, and are
learning to manage their time, so they can
focus on what matters.
The model of intense engagement and
customized mentoring leads to accelerated
learning and sustained inspiration – this
pedagogy is being proved repeatedly, in
different circumstances – with different
learning objectives, with students across the
spectrum, at different venues with diverse
topics and multiple faculty with diverse
styles – there’s something in these pilots that
can project Centurion as the pioneer of the
sustainable, affordable, and effective
education of the future.
