CHAPTER 1: Preliminaries

Introduction

Centurion is a user-friendly tool that can diagnose engine and system problems and perform many other tasks. This Windows-based program communicates with a large variety of ECMs / ECUs (Engine Control Modules / Engine Control Units). The interface between the ECU and the PC is via the USB port. The graphic user interface (GUI) with the help, hotkey, and mouse support provides a user-friendly system. The GUI consists of a pull-down menu and a tool bar. The execution of the menu items is performed via numeric controls, command button controls, pop-up panels and other mechanisms. About this Manual The Centurion User’s Guide is a comprehensive guide that contains all of the procedures you need to work with this software. This manual is organized by chapters that describe the use of the software and the general description of the commands. Many topics covered in this manual can also be found in the help menu inside the program.

System Requirements The following system configuration is required: - IBM or compatible PC with a minimum of 8MB of RAM (16MB recommended) - VGA Monitor, SVGA monitor or better - Windows Vista/XP/2000/NT/98 Technical Support You can reach us at www.technoresearch.com, or at (248) 658-1800 during normal business hours EST.

CHAPTER 3: Data Monitoring In order to display the data you wish to monitor, you have to establish connection with the ECU and set the program to either gauges/meters mode or strip chart mode. To establish communication, use the ‘connection’ command by either clicking on the communication icon or using the communication menu. In strip chart mode, you can select the data you want to be displayed using the channels/view command and choosing the on or off position. You can also change the colors of the lines of the strip chart using the colors command. Gauges/meters mode will show the same data. You can choose it by either clicking on the dashboard icon or using the dashboard option in the communication menu. This mode shows the data through slide bars, thermometers, check lights and nubs.

O.C. = Open Circuit / S.C. = Short Circuit / High V. = High Voltage / Low V. = Low Voltage When a sensor related problem exists, the following error messages would appear for any of the next parameters. The following are some of the diagnostic trouble codes:

Air temperature: “O.C/High V.” or “S.C./Low V.” Engine temperature: “O.C/High V.” or “S.C./Low V.” Barometric pressure: “O.C/Low V.” or “S.C./High V.” Throttle position: “O.C/High V.” or “S.C./Low V.” Cam position: “O.C/High V.” or “S.C./Low V.” Tip sensor: “O.C/High V.” or “S.C./Low V.” Battery Voltage: “O.C/High V.” or “S.C./Low V.” Injector #1: “O.C/Low V.” or “S.C./High V.” Injector #2: “O.C/Low V.” or “S.C./High V.” Coil #1: “O.C/Low V.” or “S.C./High V.” Coil #2: “O.C/Low V.” or “S.C./High V.” Tachometer: “O.C/Low V.” or “S.C./High V.” Trips since last fault: Indicates how many trips the motorcycle has performed since an error has been detected. Function Errors ECU microP: “ECU microP Signal Error (LED red) ”ECU EEPROM: “ECU EEPROM Signal Error (LED red)” ECU ROM: “ECU ROM Signal Error (LED red)” ECU RAM: “ECU RAM Signal Error (LED red)” Crank/Cam: “Crank/Cam Signal Error (LED red)” Crank position: “Crank Pos Signal Error (LED red)”

System Status (read-only) The System Status Command displays a window, which shows all the status flags

Anti-Theft Status (read-only) Shows status flags for anti-theft parameters

Anti-Lock Brake Status (read-only) Please note: this feature is currently only available on Japanese models included in Centurion Pro-Plus

Vehicle Communication Module Specification Establishes that Centurion has responded. If this screen shows data in the fields and you are still having a communication problem, it means that it is on the bike side rather than the module side. Be sure that the system is powered up, or this screen will not read.

Establish connection with the ECU

Cut connection with the ECU

Log on/Log off Toggles the data capture feature. *NOTE: you must be in Strip Chart mode to use the data logging feature. (Strip chart mode screen shown above.) The triggering can be set up to automatically capture as many data points as specified in the Log Data Points field when an error event is set. The data can be recorded in three different ways (start, middle and end), from the moment of the trigger, half the data points before the moment of the trigger and half the points after the trigger, or all the data points that preceded the trigger. Browse allows the selection of a filename. Trigger Mode selects Auto or Manual. Error event specifies the nature of the trigger.

Channels/Mode Use Min. & Max. fields to set the minimum & maximum scale values for data monitoring. Note that Strip Chart Mode provides the highest number of configurable channels: 16. Horizontal Slide Bar Mode has 4, and Gauges/Meters Mode has 6. However, the options selection is the same for the channels no matter which mode is selected. View Mode Options Parallel: Activates an individual chart for each channel to be displayed in the same screen using independent scales for each parameter. Overlay: Shows all the parameter graphs using the same scale for each one.

Units °F Displays the data in degrees Fahrenheit using the English unit system °C Displays the data in degrees Celsius using the SI unit system. .
