Summary

2005 was the second year of activity of the Centro de Química da Madeira (CQM) covered by

the financial support of FCT and the main objective defined in the initial project was the

stabilization of the research activities and the consolidation of the research lines by the

attraction of young PhD and post-doc students. This main objective was fully achieved

considering the fact that 1 PhD project was approved in 2004 and 4 were granted in 2005 (to

be started in January 2006). In consequence, the CQM will have in 2006 six permanent PhD

students (1 project is expected to finish during 2006). Another PhD student is actually

working at the University of Bordeaux (France). The actual number of post-doc students is 4

(0 in 2004). The increasing number of post docs was foreseen and represents an important

addition to our planning and working capacity. This is a major issue in the evolution of the

research team.

In terms of research projects, an important work was carried out in order to assure the

integration of CQM in the National networks for NMR and MS. The project (CHEMIA) was

approved in 2004 and the networks were formed under the supervision of FCT during the year

of 2005. In consequence, the CQM is expecting to receive a 400MHz NMR and a LCMSMS until

the end of 2006 (total investment of about 500000€, financed by FCT). Three new research

projects started during the year of 2005, involving a total amount of about 1300000€

(Financial support from FCT and FEDER). It must be stressed that two of these projects are

headed by CQM. With these three projects, members of CQM were involved in financed

projects totalizing more than 2000000€ in the last three years. The important number of

projects running in our facilities requires special attention on the attraction of PhD students,

but essentially post-docs due the associated scientific autonomy that they can bring to the

team.

During 2005, three important international meetings were held in Funchal under the

organization of members of CQM. The VI Conference on Inorganic Chemistry, from 31 March -

3 April 2005, involved about 110 attendees (30 of them from abroad). The Matrix-2005 Low

Temperature Spectroscopy and Matrix Isolation, was held in Funchal from July 24-29 and

involved more than 100 attendees and the congress of the Phytochemistry Society of Europe –

Phytotherapy 2005, held in Funchal from November 1-5.

An important issue was the regular emission of the CQM newsletter, Memento, as an

important tool for the spreading of information concerning our current activities. This is well

expressed by the people that accessed the web page of CQM during the year of 2005: 18031

(+16% than 2004). CQM was also involved in the activities planed for the National week for

Science and Technology (November) and received 8 undergraduate students for a two weeks

training period in our research labs (July).

In what concerns the number of papers published in international journals, the number is

lower (7) than expected (12). This number does not reflect the work carried out has three

others papers appeared in the first 2006 issue (January) and other 9 were accepted for

publication. They will be published along the first semester of 2006. To these figures, 3 book

chapters and 40 presentations in several meeting must be added.

The financial results show a rather low use of the amount supplied by FCT. Two main reasons

can justify this fact: an important amount was reserved for the needs not covered by the

project CHEMIA, in order to add flexibility in the optimization of the internal conditions for

the installation and use of the NMR and LCMS; and the contract of a lab technician foreseen

for these equipments. The fact that both equipments were not acquired in 2005, the good

use of these amounts was delayed and will be applied during the year of 2006. FCT has

already agreed with this request.

Reminding the main objectives for 2004-2005:

1. The stabilization of the current research activities and the consolidation of the

research lines – Natural Products and Materials research areas will be developed

having in view an increased integration and equilibrium between applied and

innovative chemistry, as suggested by the unit evaluation panel;

2. To increase the scientific production of the team; it is expected to publish an average

number of at least two papers per PhD per year by the end of the period;

3. To reinforce the collaboration with regional entities as well as national and

international research groups in order to increase the involvement in research

activities and full recognition by our pairs;

4. To attract young and good PhD and Post-doc students in order to increase the human

potential of the group.

Considering the above, the main objectives defined for the CQM for the period 2004-2005

were achieved and the adequate conditions were prepared for the next three year period.

We believe that these results show that young and new research teams can advantageously be

supported, if an ambitious but feasible project is outlined. We do hope to maintain the high

levels of expectancy created with the current projects and justify the confidence received

from FCT and the evaluation panel.

2005 Relatório científico

Main unit projects approved in the 2004-2005 period involve the acquisition of large equipment

(CHEMIA) and CQM2005 submited to FEDER for the support of the research unit. Two important

international research projects were approved in 2005 (Antivinmac e Biopolis) financed by FEDER,

Interreg IIIB. Due to the importance for the sustainable growth of the research team the PhD project

started in 2005 and the 4 new grants (Projects to be started in 2006) deserve special attention. In

complement, 4 post-doc projects have been granted and the involved foreign students reveal the

confidence on the work under run in the group and the recognition by other international groups.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

CQM and the Chemistry Department of the University of Madeira were pioneers in the introduction in

Portugal of science events for academic and non-academic general public. A Química é divertida

(Chemistry is fun) is organized regularly since 1995. Since late 90’s we use to regularly include planed

activities in the Science and Technology National Week (November). The 2005 event included a

scientific meeting and a visit to the research labs, including fun lab experiments. In July, 8 under

graduate students, from a secondary school (Calheta), were received and integrated in the research

projects for two weeks.

In the regular collaboration with regional authorities a protocol on the area of Natural Products was

established with SDM (Sociedade de Desenvolvimento da Madeira) and 3 students received financial

support (1500€) in order to pursuit research activities.

CQM has also de coordination of a post-graduate course on Occupational Safety and Hygiene (21

students were graduated in 2005 and 28 started a new course).

Members of CQM were also involved in the preparation of the new graduate courses, following the

adoption of the Bologna Protocol by the Portuguese National Authorities.

HUMAN RESOURCES

The number of full members of CQM is the same as in 2004 but the team changed dramatically during

2005 with the arrival of the new post-doc students and the launching of the new PhD projects, as

expected. The CQM has the purpose to engage an increasing number of Chemistry students in current

activities in order to increase the experimental skills and interest for scientific activities.

Several students were sent to other research unit in Finland, France, Spain and mainland Portugal.

We also expect to include regional technicians in the team despite the fact that the number of PhD

working outside the University is small. However, the interaction with regional entities will also

increase with the installation of large scale equipment (NMR and LCMS) together with the expected

increase of PhD and post-doc students and also well known researchers in sabbatical leave.

2005 Published communications

2005 Publicações realizadas

Despite the fact that the objective for the publication of 12 papers in international journals was not

achieved (7 were published), it must be stressed that 12 other papers were accepted for publication

during the year of 2005 (3 of them were published in the first issues of 2006). Considering that 9 other

papers were submitted and are under evaluation, we believe that the objective was fully achieved.

This shows that an average value of about 1.5 papers / full member can be maintained in the near

future. Unfortunately no papers were published in national journals, also because the number of

national journals covering our research area is limited and were substituted by international options.

The PhD thesis foreseen for 2005 will be presented during 2006.

The number of oral and poster presentations (40) is significantly higher that expected which would

reflect the large amount of work done and will turn to an important number of papers to be published

in 2006.

Reflecting the high amount of work carried out within the team, two important prices were won by

CQM members. The first, PREMIO ZARCO, is attributed every two years to the most recognised work on

science and culture in Madeira. Two candidates were CQM members and the price was won by: Helena

Caldeira with her PhD thesis: Purines, creatine, defective methylation and their biochemical and

clinical relationship. The work was carrtied out under the supervision of Marinus Duran (University of

Amsterdam), Isabel Almeida (University of Lisbon) and Helena Tomás (member of CQM, University of

Madeira).

A smaller but rather important price was won by Rosa Perestrelo, as the best poster presentation in the

Chromatography National Meeting, December 2005) covering the work carried out for the chemistry

degree, under the supervision of José Câmara (CQM member, University of Madeira).

We believe that with the new Post-doc and PhD students and with the equipment expected to be

installed during 2006 the team can maintain the high levels of performance and justify the confidence

placed on the group by the evaluation committee in 2003.

Financial report

Relatório financeiro

The financial report involves exclusively the amount sent by FCT for the unit – project CQM2005. No

expenses involved in the research projects are included.

As indicated above, the planed expenses were only partially executed due to the fact that the planed

acquisition of the NMR and MS (National networks) was delayed and the equipments will be installed in

2006. Thus, the reserved amount for the lab technician was not used. As agreed with FCT, the unused

amounts can be used until the end of 2006. The decision of careful use of the amount sent by FCT for

this period was conditioned by the need of extra expenses to be carried out for the new equipment as

most demands were covered by the approved projects. Other than the technician and the reserved

amount for maintenance, CQM intends and is prepared to spend an important amount in a new

corporate image (including logo and web page), large printing plotter and auxiliary equipment

(foreseen for the beginning of 2006). Part of the available amount will used for the invitation of well

recognised researchers (not foreseen for 2005, but requested for 2006).

As no indication was given until this moment about the financial support for the next three years, the

use of the available amount will be conditioned until complete information is received from FCT.
