Program Objective:

The workshop focuses on imparting knowledge in Electronic components, Robotics and Fab

Lab for school students. The students from class VII to X will get all necessary basics to

develop a project from scratch. 3D models and laser cutter give them necessary aid in

developing parts of their projects and assemble and then implement.

The students were gave an awareness about the e-Yantra, a project by IIT Mumbai funded by

MHRD under National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT). The basics of

Robotics and programming concepts were introduced to the students using the FIREBIRD V

robotic kit of ELSI Lab established by e-yantra.

1-04-2019, Monday Official Inauguration, 9:15 am

Dr. Praveensal C J, Principal, SSET formally inaugurated the Robotics Skill Development

Workshop 2019 for School Students. In his inaugural address, he stressed the need and

importance of conducting such training programs among young students. He mentioned that

such workshop will create awareness of various engineering streams and help them to

familiarize machineries and equipments used by engineers. Dr. Sunil Jacob, Director, Centre

for Robotics, SSET gave the welcome speech and presented the theme address. He introduced

the team members of workshop to the participating students coming from various schools.

Introduction to Robotics and its Role 9.30 am-10.30am Dr. Sunil Jacob

Robotics is the process of developing robots to carry out a particular function. Dr. Sunil

Jacob, Professor & Director, SCMS Centre for Robotics, had taken a session about Robotics

and its Role in this era.

Introduction to Electronic Components 10.30 am - 12.15pm Mr. Vinoj P.G

Mr. Vinoj P.G delivered a session on fundamentals of electronics. Then students were divided

into four groups with one faculty assisting each group. Each group was given a set of

electronic components and gave detailed explanation.

Introduction to Programming in C -1.15 pm – 2.15 pm Mrs. Sreeja Rajesh

Mrs Sreeja Rajesh, Assistant Professor, CSE, Dept took a session on Introduction to

Computers and Programming concepts

Basic Electrical Workshop – 2.15 pm -3.30 pm Mrs. Priya Venugopal , Mr. K.A

Babu Ms. Priya Venugopal, Assistant Professor, EEE Dept gave an introduction to Electrical

Engineering and K A Babu, Lab Instructor of EE Engg. Department, SSET has demonstrate

how to make an Electrical circuit for lighting the lamp. Then students had design the circuit

to glow a light lamp.

02-04-2019, Tuesday

Electronics Lab 9.00 am – 12.20 pm Mrs. Jyothylekshmi S.

Familiarization of Electronic Components was continued by Mrs. Jyothylekshmi S.Lab

Instructor, ECE Dept. The students were divided into five groups with one staff assisting each

group. Each group was given a set of electronic components and familiarizes it. After that,

Electronic components identification competition was held.

Physics Lab Visit - 1.30 pm – 2.30 pm Mrs.Resmi M

Mrs.Resmi M, Assistant Professor, Physics Department has taken a session for familiarizing

the equipments used in Physics lab. They got the experience about the Fundamentals of

Interference, Diffractions etc.

Chemistry Lab Visit - 2.30 pm – 3.30 pm Jesna K Sebastian

Mr. Joshy K George, Associate Professor, Jesna K Sebastian, Assistant Professor and Athira

Subash, Lab Instructor of Chemistry Department SSET has familiarized the equipments used

in the Chemistry lab and demonstrated some experiments on Analysis of Hardness of water,

Determination of PH of water, Urea Formaldehyde Resin preparation etc.

Programming in C 9.00 am – 12.20 pm Mrs. Sreeja Rajesh

Mrs Sreeja Rajesh, Assistant Professor, CSE Dept took a detailed session on Programming in

C Language.. Mrs. Asha Jacob and Mrs Sushitha P.K Lab Instructors, CSE Dept assist the

Electronics Lab 1:30 pm – 3.30 pm Mrs. Mrs.Smitha P.C

Mrs. Smitha P.C, Lab Instructor, ECE Dept, conducted a session on electronic circuit

experiments. Students with 2 members in a group have done the experiments –LED Display,

Power Supply Construction – Halfwave Rectifier, Fullwave Rectifier, Bridge Rectifier &

Zener Diode Regulation.

Digital Circuits in Electronics Lab 9.00 am – 12.20 pm Mrs. Listy Jeemon

Mrs. Listy Jeemon conducted a session on digital experiments based on Transistor-Transistor

Logic (TTL). And also they have done the experiments using digital IC’s - OR, AND, NOT,

NAND, NOR and X-OR Lab Staff of ECE Circuit Design Competition

Automobile Workshop 1.30 pm – 2.45 pm Mr. Haridas V.K

Mr. Haridas V.K, Foreman, Automobile Engg Department demonstrate the functions of ‘4

Stroke Petrol Engine’, ‘Vertical Boring Machine’, ‘System of Horizontal Boring Machine’.

Mechanical Workshop 2.45 pm – 3.30 pm Mr. K K Gopalakrishnan

Mr. K K Gopalakrishnan, Workshop Superintendent, Mechanical Engineering Department

demonstrated the working of ‘CNC machines’, ‘Conventional Lathe machines’, ‘Pelton

Turbine’ etc.

05-04-2019, Friday Programming in C 9.00 am – 12.25 pm Mrs Sreeja Rajesh

Mrs Sreeja Rajesh, Assistant Professor took a session on Programming in C Language. Later

they have done C programs Mrs Asha Jacob, Lab Assistant, CSE, Dept and Mrs Sushitha P.K

Lab Instructor, CSE dept also assist the students.

3 D Designing 1.15 pm – 3.30 pm Mr.Nikhil Asok N

Mr.Nikhil Asok N, Assistant Professor, Automobile Engineering Dept, had taken a session in

3D printer software - Onsahape. Students design their own key chains in this software and

later printed it in 3D printer in FAB Lab. Mr. Premand R, Lab Intructor, Me Dept assist the

students.

3D Designing - 9.00 am – 12.25 pm Mr.Nikhil Asok N

Mr.Nikhil Asok N, Assistant Professor, Automobile Engineering Dept continues the 3D

designing session and Mr. Premand R, Lab Intructor, Me Dept assist the students.

Introduce Firebird V Robotic Kit 1.15 pm – 2.30 pm Mrs Priya Venugopal

The students were gave an awareness about the e-Yantra, a project by IIT Mumbai funded by

culture activities and showcase their talents.

08-04-2019, Monday Centre for Robotics 9.00 am – 10.00 am Dr. Sunil Jacob

An interactive session was conducted by Dr. Sunil Jacob with the students for their

innovative ideas and explains how to make a project successful in time and different aspects

of doing projects.

Robotic Kit – Firebird V Programming - 10.00 am – 12.25 pm Mrs Asha Jacob

The session was handled by Mrs Asha Jacob and done sample programs on LED, LCD

display, Buzzer and Timer in Firebird V Robot.

2D Designing 1:30 pm -3.30 pm Dr. Saira Joseph

Dr. Saira Joseph, Associate Professor and HOD ECE Dept. had taken a session in Laser

Cutter designing software – Corel Draw. The students designed their own mementos in Corel

Draw.

2D Designing Continues 9.00 am – 10.00 am Dr. Saira Joseph

Dr. Saira Joseph explains the working principle of Laser cutter. Students were fabricated their

on mementoes using Laser Cutter in the FAB Lab.

Mini Project Electronic Circuits (DIY) 10.00 am – 3.30 pm Mr. Jibin Lukose

Mr. Jibin Lukose, Research Intern, SCMS Centre for Robotics, explains the various steps

needed for doing a project. It begins from circuit design and drawing it using Corel Draw

software. Mrs. Asha Jacob and Mrs. Sreeja Rajesh, CSE Dept. assisted the students.

10-04-2019, Wednesday

C Code Testing 9.00 am – 10.00 am Mrs. Sreeja Rajesh

A C Code testing session was taken by Mrs. Sreeja Rajesh to the participants. The result was

awesome. The participants were able to crack the code and get the output within short span of

time.

DIY Robots (Ardino Programming & Introduction to Sensors) 10.00 am –

12.25 pm Mr.Jibin Lukose

Arduino is a popular open-source development board used by engineers, hobbyists and

makers to develop electronic projects and prototypes in an easy way. The Arduino platform

consists of many development boards like Arduino UNO, Arduino Nano, Arduino Mega,

Arduino Pro Mini etc.. Mr.Jibin Lukose takes a detailed session on Ardino Progamming.

Students fabricated the Gesture Controlled Robot circuit in FAB Lab using Laser Cutter.

3D Designing Competition 01.30 pm - 3.00 pm Mr.Nikhil N Asok

Mr.Nikhil N Asok conducted a 3D Designing Completion. All participants designed their

own ‘Water Bottle’ with a fantastic way.

11-04-2019, Thursday

Familiarize Firebird V Robotic Kit 09.00 am -10.30 am Mrs. Asha Jacob

Mrs. Asha Jacob explains about Pulse Width Modulator; Servo motor, ADC convertor etc.

used in Fire Bird V robotic kit and sample programs were done. Also demonstrate different

projects using Fire Bird V Robotic Kit. Mrs Sreeja Rajesh, assist the session.

DIY Robots (Gesture Controlled Robot) 10.30 am – 02.30 pm Mr.Jibin Lukose

The brain of the robot is an Arduino Uno (Atmega32). It is fed with a set of code. The

gestures/motion made by hand is recognized by the acceleration measuring device called

accelerometer. Mr.Jibin Lukose takes a detailed session about this and student’s teams with

group of 4 members develop their own gesture controlled root.

FAB Lab 02.30 pm – 03.30 pm Dr. Sunil Jacob

Dr. Sunil Jacob demonstrated different social relevant projects done by students of SSET

under his guidance in FAB lab. Some of the projects explained were: D-Adicto, MMIP,

Bugg-Boat, Bionic Haptic Arm etc. and also explain the functionality of different machines

installed in FAB Lab. Mrs. Smitha P.C and Mr. Jibin Lukose assist the session.

12-04-2019, Friday

Implementation of DIY Robot 09.00 am -11.00 am

A track following robot competition was held for student group. All teams participated with

their own Gesture Controlled Robot and successfully completed the track in time. Dr. Sunil

Jacob and Mrs. Sreeja Rajesh judges the competition.

Idea Presentation 11.00 am -1.00 pm

An Idea Presentation session was conducted. Five groups consisting of 4 to 5 students each

prepared a Power Point presentation and explain their innovative ideas. Dr. Sunil Jacob, Dr.

Varun G Menon and Mr. Jibin Lukose assess the session.

Prizes for all competition were distributed during the Valedictory Function.

Valedictory Function 2.00 pm – 3.30 pm

Two week long workshop successfully completed and the valedictory function was held on

April 2019.

Dr.Praveensal C J, Principal, SSET shared his views in robotics and told that ‘Robotics

education will be a key determiner in employment and will make a significant difference in

facing the challenges in the coming decade ‘.

‘Today’s children are tomorrow’s heroes, and conducting such workshops will nurture good

enthusiasm in students regarding engineering and robotics ‘- Dr. Sunil Jacob, Director, SCMS

Centre for Robotics said. He also mentioned about the importance of conducting such

workshops.

Certificates were distributed to all participants of the workshop by Principal and prizes for the

competitions were distributed by HODs of different departments. Dr. Sunil Jacob, distributed

certificates to all the staff members who actively contributed in the workshop.

Students and Parents conveyed their feedback about the workshop. They were very impressed

to get an opportunity to attend a workshop in an engineering campus. One student told that,

all participants were initially feared about approaching the professors of a professional

institution, but while interacting with Dr. Sunil Jacob and the team all their perception

changed and would surely join the team if they given another opportunity in next vacation.

This workshop was a stepping stone for him in the field of robotics another student shared his

view.

Program Coordinator of the workshop delivered the Vote of Thanks.
