APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR 2019 INTAKE

M A S T E R S I N H E R I T A G E M A N A G E M E N T

Aspiring candidates are invited to apply for the two-year full-time degree programme ‘Master of Management Studies in Heritage Management’ at Ahmedabad University. Applicants are also encouraged to set up an appointment to visit the centre and discuss with faculty about potential enrolment.

The Master’s Programme in Heritage Management is a two-year degree programme, the first of its kind in India. It emphasizes a critical understanding of heritage and a holistic management approach to the heritage sector. Areas of exploration within the curriculum include a diverse range of sectors spanning tangible and intangible heritage, cultural and natural heritage, historic and contemporary/living heritage, and so on, with emphasis on the management of these categories.

The programme practices mixed pedagogy and includes lectures, seminars, discussion and group work as well as field-learning through immersion and practicum programme, and a culminating thesis.

Eligibility

Admissions are open to a multi-disciplinary cohort: Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree in History, Design, Anthropology, Archaeology, Architecture, Literature, Environment, Engineering, Economics, Crafts, Performing Arts and others (with a minimum of 50% marks, with exception to those applying under SC/ST category) with a demonstrated interest in heritage (through academic or professional works) may apply.

Students who have appeared or will appear for the final year examination of bachelor’s degree by June 2019, can also apply – provided that they are able to furnish the final results by September 30, 2019. International Students are advised to apply early to enable visa related processes to be completed on time.

A FUN GET-TOGETHER BEFORE THE DIWALI BREAK

The annual Diwali break offered a short but sweet breathing space in an otherwise very engaged semester for both faculty and students. Students were creative to begin the break with a small get together, in which some alumni also joined.

FACULTY AND STAFF ENGAGEMENTS

EXPERT MEETING ON STRENGTHENING HIGHER EDUCATION FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE MANAGEMENT IN THE ASIA PACIFIC REGION

Professor Neel Kamal Chapagain was invited by UNESCO Bangkok office to the Expert Meeting on Strengthening Higher Education for Cultural Heritage Management in the Asia Pacific Region that took place on 3-4 November 2018 at Southeast University, Nanjing, China. The meeting reviewed the progress on competency frameworks for higher education for cultural heritage management that is under preparation since last year, in which Professor Chapagain has been actively involved.

PRESENTATION AT INTERNATIONAL PLATFORMS

• Nikhil Parashar, a second year student of Masters in Heritage Management participated in 4th FilmPreservation and Restoration Workshop, India, 2018, as a TATA Trusts Scholar held on 15 - 22November, 2018 at ICCR, Kolkata. A fully funded scholarship allowed him to participate in theworkshop on 'Cataloguing' which was taught by Thelma Ross, Cataloguer, Museum of Modern Art,New York & Head, Cataloguing and Documentation Commission of FIAF. The overall course wastaught by more than fifteen experts from around the world touching on various aspects of MovingImage Archives Preservation and Restoration.

• Sukrit Sen, a first year student of Master in Heritage Management presented his paper ‘ FestivalArchitecture of Tangible and Intangible Heritage: A Case of Durga Puja’ at the InternationalConference on Urban Conservation organised by the Centre for Built Environment on 28th

November 2018 at the Indian Council of Cultural Relations, Kolkata.

WORLD HERITAGE WEEK ACTIVITIES

Students, faculty and staff enthusiastically celebrated World Heritage Week from 19th November – 23rd November 2018 by organizing various heritage related activities dotted across the city engaging citizens from all age groups. The main initiative was taken by students.

HERITAGE WALK LED BY STUDENT

Jyoti Shukla, a first year student of Master in Heritage Management led a heritage walk on 21 November 2018 in collaboration with Sahapedia with participants from Ahmedabad University. She also conducted another walk with participants from Indian Institute of Travel and Tourism Management, Ahmedabad in collaboration with Sahapedia on 28th November, 2018. This walk aimed to acquaint students with the history of one of the most popular leaders of the Indian freedom struggle and different individuals associated with the Shahibaugh palace of Ahmedabad.

A MORNING EXPLORING NATURE WITH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Students of Masters Programme conducted an interactive outdoor session "Kahaani Patton Ki" (stories of leaves) on 23rd of November at the Shreyas School campus. Around twenty students from Rahe khair Girls’ School, Raikhad, Jamalpur and about the same number from Shreyas school students participated in this exploration at the lush green campus. The participants walked through the green patches around Venu Ban. Theytried to discover the various sounds of nature, sing songs related to nature and then painted small book marks with dry leaves that they picked from the premises. The event was jointly organized by the centre, INTACH and Shreyas Foundation.

2ND EDITION OF WATER VARTA AT NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF DESIGN

Living Waters Museum initiative at the Centre, Ahmedabad University organised second edition of Water Varta at National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad for the entire week. The programme started with inaugural session which was attended by professor Sara Ahmed, the designer of the exhibition Swarnika Nimje, NID student; Priyanka Kumari, Project Coordinator, Living Waters Museum and Bhargav Padhiyar, Executive, Living Waters Museum and Centre’s students and staff members. Surkrit Sen, Student at the Centre also performed at the inaugural programme using water based utensils and water.

ACADEMIC UPDATES

As the Monsoon semester full of academic, extracurricular activities and events approaches to its completion, students are busy preparing the final deliverables of various courses. With unique topics for their theses, second years students have finalised their thesis proposals, while the first year students have written papers on various academic discourses, carried out field research and prepared documentation on two not-so-well-known stepwells in Ahmedabad, among other course assignments. The students shared their academic learning with the larger university community at the University wide Semester End Expo (Monsoon 2018 Edition) on 14th November. The expo featured students’ work from all programmes across the university, and thus offered an enriching opportunity for students to share their learning with others while also learning what their peers have been doing in various programmes. The outcomes were in the form of posters, performances and prototypes. Participating students and faculty members were available to talk about their courses and outcomes. Over 100 exhibits across 20 courses and 7 programmes were displayed.

EDUCATION AND PRACTIC, 14-16 DECEMBER 2018

Day 1 (14 December):

• Inaugural Session: Keynote Speaker: Dr. Webber Ndoro, Director General, ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of Preservation of Cultural Property), Rome, Italy

• Plenary Discussion hosted by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, followed by inauguration of the best practices expo.

• Technical Sessions on integrating (i) heritage and development, (ii) heritage and education, (iii) tangible and intangible, and (iv) natural and cultural

• Conclusion by a Welcome Reception along with cultural programme

Day 2 (15 December)

• Plenary speakers: Dr. V.B. Mathur, Director, UNESCO C2C on World Natural Heritage Management and Training, Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun

• Ms. Sushma Iyengar, President, Khamir, Kutch

• Technical sessions on (i) Our fluid heritage, (ii) community participation and partnerships, along with posters and masters theses presentations.

Day 3 (15 December)

• Plenary discussion on Heritage Management Education and Practice: featuring faculty across universities from India, Nepal, USA, Phillippines and Australia

• Technical Sessions on (i) Museums (ii) heritage and economics, and (iii) local and global discourses.

• Special plenary session on World Heritage Management: The Case of Ahmedabad (in collaboration with ICOMOS India and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation)

• Address by Mr. Vijay Nehra, Municipal Commissioner, and panel discussions with experts.

• Concluding Plenary featuring summary discussion on the conference, and announcement of theme for next year’s conference.

• Networking High Tea and Farewell.

EVENTS

SHAHAR ME JAL AUR JAL ME SHAHAR BY THE LIVING WATERS MUSEUM

The upcoming event called “Jal me Sheher, Sheher me Jal” will open on Dec 7th, at 5 p.m. at Project Otenga, Ahmedabad University. The event seeks to reflect on the ‘Water’ of a transforming city through art, play and dialogues. Shalvi Suman is a first year student at Centre for Heritage Management, Ahmedabad University. As part of her internship with Living Waters Museum, she has explored the past and present of the Sabarmati River and has documented it in the form of a short film. The event involves showcase of the Water Varta Project.

CENTRE FOR HERITAGE MANAGEMENT

It is with such spirit, that Ahmedabad University set up the Centre for Heritage Management (CHM) with focuses on academic, practice and research issues in the domain of Heritage and Culture. CHM is one of its kind in India and specialises in Heritage Management to promote conservation and management of heritage assets. Through CHM, Ahmedabad University offers a unique two years Master’s Degree Programme on Heritage Management and a few executive programmes for mid-level professionals. It also conducts collaborative action research such as the recently completed Cultural Heritage Management & Venture Lab, Ahmedabad, which was funded by the European Union and was pursued in partnership with the University of Valladolid and Valladolid City Council in Spain and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation as well as a few other partners. CHM has recently launched an international Journal of Heritage Management, in association with the SAGE publications. It is in this scheme of initiatives to strengthen the field of heritage management, that the international conference on Heritage Management Education and Practice is being organised.
