First-class study resourcesAll students rely on being able to access a range ofinformation. At Kent we make sure this process is aseasy as possible. Our library is well stocked and themost popular books are on short-term loan, whichmeans you never have to wait too long for essentialtexts. Our online resources are excellent too, with ahuge range of journals available.

Technology is one of our priorities: we providepublic computers with Wi-Fi access so when you’reon campus you can always connect to the internet,the University’s network and public printers. We alsouse technology in our teaching via online resourcesand podcasts of lectures.

Exciting social facilities At Kent, there are plenty of places to have fun andmeet up with friends. Our campuses offer a rangeof high-quality cafés, bars, restaurants and sportsfacilities. At the Centre for English and World Languages (CEWL), we provideinternational learning opportunities for students, staff and the widercommunity. We are the first port of call for anyone wanting to find out aboutthe full range of language learning opportunities at the University of Kent.

What do we offer?CEWL offers a wide range of opportunities forstudents of the University of Kent to improve theiracademic English or to learn a variety of worldlanguages:• ‘wild’ credit-bearing world language modules

(wild modules are modules which are outsideyour normal programme of study. Not allprogrammes permit wild modules)

• non-credit bearing world language courses • Language Express• In-sessional English Skills modules for Kent

students who are non-native English speakers(credit bearing and non-credit bearing modules).

We also offer a range of programmes and languageservices which are open to Kent students, membersof staff and the wider community:• world language courses (Language Express)• Cambridge exam preparation courses• English language teacher training (CELTA)• intercultural awareness and communications

In-sessional English Skills (non-creditbearing modules)In-sessional English Skills (IES) provides Englishlanguage support for all Kent students – fromfoundation to postgraduate level – who are non-native speakers of English. This programme helpsyou improve your academic English language skillsand gives you the chance to discuss your specificlanguage difficulties with an experienced languagetutor. It helps you improve the accuracy of yourgrammar and develop your listening comprehension,seminar discussion skills and writing style foracademic assignments.

We offer:• a free English language support service

throughout the academic year• a ten-week cycle of taught modules, delivered in

the autumn term and repeated in the spring term• individual writing tutorials with staff from CEWL in

the autumn and spring terms• independent study materials on Moodle for all

registered students.

The programme consists of four taught modules anda series of individual tutorials.

Essay Writing – ED001Aims: you are taken through the process of writingessays in a format that is normally accepted at UKuniversities.

Learning outcomes: you recognise theconventional structures of academic texts and areable to: select suitable material from source texts,paraphrase accurately, write an assignment thatfollows academic conventions, proof read youressays for relevance, register, coherence andcohesion.

Grammar – ED002Aims: this module teaches you to write essaysin structurally correct English and enables you toidentify, and correct, grammatical errors in yourwriting.

Learning outcomes: you learn how to: review yourwriting critically for grammatical accuracy, correctgrammatical errors, search online for assistance withgrammatical issues.

Seminar Discussion and PresentationSkills – ED003Aims: the modules covers guidance and practicein seminar discussion skills and the preparation,organisation and delivery of presentations in anacademic context.

Learning outcomes: you understand how to:discuss academic topics in an appropriate register;select and organise suitable content, plan thestructure and deliver a presentation on yourspecialist subject.

Listening Comprehension/Note Taking –ED004Aims: this module improves your understandingof a range of spoken texts. While placing emphasison listening to formal lectures, the module alsorecognises the importance of colloquial English inacademic situations.

Learning outcomes: You learn how to identify thestructure of a formal lecture, recognise languagemarkers, select and use appropriate note takingstyles, recognise a range of language registers andbe aware of a variety of British accents.

Individual Writing Tutorials – ED005Aims: You have the opportunity to discuss youracademic writing with a member of staff at CEWL,who will give you advice on the structure, coherenceand cohesion of your work. Individual sessions last20 minutes each.

Learning outcomes: You learn how to identifyorganisational and syntactical strengths andweaknesses in your writing and edit your own work.

World languages (credit bearingmodules) CEWL offers the following credit-bearing modulesin world languages which do not already fit withexisting language-related degree programmes atKent. These modules enable you to study one ofthe following languages as an assessed part ofyour degree. Modules are available at differentlevels, including a beginners’ module, so no priorknowledge is required.

COURSES FOR KENT STUDENTS ANDTHE WIDER COMMUNITY

CEWL offers a wide range of courses in English and world languages as well asspecific courses for those who would like to train to teach English as a foreignlanguage.

Both courses prepare you for the CambridgeAdvanced (CAE) and Proficiency (CPE) exams.You have the opportunity to practise exam tasksin all four areas. You receive feedback on aspectsof the test to give you a guide to your level andperformance, as well as the chance to try testtasks in timed conditions.

Cambridge Certificate in EnglishLanguage Teaching to Adults (CELTA)CELTA is an internationally recognised qualificationfor teaching English to adults. It provides you withthe minimum entry level for the English languageteaching profession and enables you to apply forteaching posts in the UK or abroad. It is arequirement for teaching in British Councilaccredited schools in the UK. A CELTA qualificationis regarded by employers as providing sound initialtraining and a strong basis from which to develop asa teacher of English.

Course detailsOur CELTA course is an intensive full-time, four-weekcourse taking place 9am – 5pm Monday to Fridayduring the summer. Please see our website forup-to-date details of course dates.

Entry requirementsYou must:• be at least 18 years old at the start of the course• have an awareness of language and a

competence in English, both written and spoken,that enables you to undertake the course

• have the potential to develop the necessaryskills to become an effective teacher and tosuccessfully complete the written assignmentsof practice teaching

• have qualifications which would allow you accessto higher education courses.

You are not required to be a native speaker ofEnglish, but you must have a minimum of C2/C1level in the Common European Framework ofReference for Languages (CEFR).

How to applyYou need to complete an application form online,followed by a pre-interview task. If successful, wewill invite you to an interview.

Language Express Language Express offers a wide range ofinternational language courses. The courses areopen to staff and students of the University of Kent,as well as the wider community. These coursesdevelop your language skills in a communicativeand interesting manner.

Classes are currently available in the followinglanguages: Arabic, French, German, Italian,Japanese, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish.

The level of course available varies according to theneeds of the participants. We always offer coursesfor beginners and post-beginners, and offerintermediate classes if there is demand for this levelfrom applicants.

All of our teachers are native speakers or havenative-speaker proficiency.

Language Express classes are two hours long, oneevening per week (18.00-20.00) and you can take a20 or ten-week course. 20-week courses start inOctober and ten-week courses start in January.

Language Express is non-credit bearing and doesnot require extensive homework assignments. Thecourse is not exam-driven, but at key points in yourstudies you receive feedback on your progress. Atthe end of the course, students who have attendedsufficiently receive an attendance document. Kentstudents can use Language Express to earnEmployability Points.

Language Express ‘Bitesize’We also offer ‘Bitesize’ which are five-weekLanguage Express beginners’ courses which startin May. They are for complete beginners who wouldlike to try a taster course in a new language beforecommitting to a longer programme.

Language Express DirectLanguage Express Direct offers one-to-one tuition inthe language of your choice. Start dates are flexibleand are set up in accordance with the needs andavailability of student and teacher.

The features of Language Express Direct include:• sourcing of suitably experienced and qualified

language teachers• provision of ten hours of tuition to be timetabled

according to student and teacher availability • use of CEWL rooms and resources• support through CEWL permanent staff• feedback and progress mechanisms for both

Cambridge English Exam PreparationcoursesCambridge Assessments are some of the bestknown and trusted English language qualifications.We offer part-time exam preparation coursesfor both the Cambridge Advanced (CAE) andProficiency (CPE) tests. All classes are taught byexperienced teachers.

The course runs twice a year (autumn and spring).There is a free taster session the week beforeteaching starts, giving you the chance to meet yourteacher and ask questions.

Our Cambridge Exam Skills Brush-Up course is 12hours over four weeks in May.

Talking Cultures: ExploringIntercultural CompetenceTalking Cultures is a series of training andconsultancy activities devised by CEWL. It fostersand enhances intercultural awareness both within,and beyond, the university context.

Talking Cultures involves the development ofintercultural awareness in higher education teachingand learning. We can also provide specific CPD(continuing professional development) for thoseworking or studying in other internationalenvironments, ranging from academics in specificfields to trainee medical practitioners. If you are anoutbound study abroad student, you can enrol onTalking Cultures workshops which allow you toconsider the intercultural skills needed both beforeyou depart and during your time abroad. Theworkshops help you to:• understand your own culture and learn about

other cultures• be aware of judgementalism and cultural bias• be aware of the social, cultural and political

contexts in study and work settings.

English, communication andinterpersonal skills for healthcarepractitioners We have a range of courses aimed at developingthe language and interpersonal skills required byhealthcare professionals. Our courses enhance thetraining opportunities for international participants indifferent areas of healthcare, such as preparation forthe Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA) for GPs andelements of part 2 of the Overseas RegistrationExam (ORE) for dentists. They are also suitable forany other healthcare professionals or internationalnurses and social care workers seeking to adapt toworking in the UK.

Language courses and services forbusinesses

Multilingual survival sessionsOur language teaching professionals can providelanguage training to your specifications to prepareyou for international travel and international businessencounters. We can offer tuition in any of thelanguages that we offer, at times which suit yourneeds.

Using languages in emailDo you need to communicate with colleagueswho speak languages other than English? Usinga few words in another language can show yourinternational understanding. We can teach you howto use key phrases in any of the languages that weoffer.

Using languages in meetingsKnowing a few key words in another language canhelp break the ice in meetings with internationalcolleagues. Tell us about your communication needsand we can help you demonstrate your internationalawareness and understanding of other cultures.
