Welcome to the Winter/ Spring Season at VISUAL

VISUAL is situated in Carlow’s town centre, on the grounds of Carlow College complex. A pedestrian entrance is located on College Street, beside Carlow Cathedral.

By car: Leave the Motorway at Junction 4. VISUAL is located on the Old Dublin Road in the centre of town. Town Council pay parking (including Disabled parking and coach parking) is available onsite, and free after 6.30pm.

By public transport: Carlow is an hour from Dublin by train, with frequent daily services. VISUAL is a 5 minute walk from Carlow Train Station. Bus Eireann and JJ Kavanagh Coaches operate frequent services daily. VISUAL is a 10 minute walk from Carlow Bus Park.

VISUAL relies on the passion and commitment of our wonderful Volunteers in the delivery of our programme and we are very grateful for their support in the gallery and the theatre spaces. Thank you for all your help!

This season celebrates active participation. Our exhibition programme and exploration gallery are all about how we plan for play and recreation in our towns, and as well as some great Irish and international work, includes some great Carlow-focused research and design projects – not to mention a chance to play on the work in the galleries! Our Join In Festival this March is all about getting involved in the life of our town, whether it’s through arts, sports or civic life. We’ve also got some Really Great Theatre this Spring, with funny, heart-warming and thought-provoking new Irish dramas. Plus lots of comedy, music and talks – always more fun when shared and enjoyed in good company. We look forward to seeing you here this Spring!

Last summer, writer John MacKenna began work on a requiem for theatre, in memory of young friends and in honour of those who mourn them. The requiem was inspired in particular, by Leonard’s hope-filled lines,

Behold the gates of mercy, in arbitrary space, and none of us deserving the cruelty or the grace, o solitude of longing where love has been confined, come healing of the body, come healing of the mind.

In late October 2016, just two weeks before his death, the singer approved the final draft of Between Your Love and Mine which will be premiered at VISUAL Carlow. Musical director for the requiem is Aisling Carter and it features the voices of Eric Butler, Katie Jacques and Shane Sullivan. The band features Aisling Carter on keyboard, Lucy Deegan on cello and Annie-Rose Deegan on violin. Spoken word is by Angela Keogh and John Mackenna, who also directs the requiem.

For this season the ground floor at VISUAL has been transformed into an adventure playground for all ages!

In the past playgrounds were places for social experiments, risky projects, and spectacular sculptures. Architects, urban planners, artists, parents, and children were invited to leave their comfort zone and to try something new. Playgrounds became focal points for ideas about education and childhood, about urban planning and public space, about architecture and art, about creativity and control.

The Playground Project presents a place for play and a visual archive of exemplary, but often forgotten playground initiatives by pioneers such as Marjory Allen (Lady Allen of Hurtwood), Joseph Brown, Riccardo Dalisi, Richard Dattner, Aldo van Eyck, M. Paul Friedberg, Michael Grossert, Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, Alfred Ledermann, Yvan Pestalozzi, Group Ludic, Egon Møller-Nielsen, Niki de Saint Phalle, Mitsuru Senda, Colin Ward and others.

The Playground Project is a touring exhibition, curated by Urban Planner Gabriela Burkhalter. It has been realised and adapted for VISUAL in cooperation with Kunsthalle Zürich. For the exhibition at VISUAL it includes work by Rhona Byrne, Tom Watt and Eva Rothschild.

The Playbook For this season, artist Steven Aylin has created a playbook for the exhibition featuring games, play activities to do at home, school and inside/outside the VISUAL galleries. The Playbook includes contributions by Dr Jackie Bourke and has been created with the support of County Carlow Sports Partnership. Schools Playdates Monday - Fridays throughout the season, €2 per pupil Teachers and their pupils are invited to play freely within the exhibition and explore the importance of play. Workshops will include a design project where pupils imagine and build model play spaces for the public. Facilitated by Mairead Kealy - schools must book a week in advance

Senior Cycle Workshops In-depth explorations and behind-the-scenes views of how the exhibition programme is built within the galleries. We have flexible times during school hours so please ring the Box Office on 059 9172400 to book your class in.

Halil Altindere — WonderlandHalil Altindere’s film Wonderland, documents the anger and frustration of a group of youths from the historic Sulukule neighborhood of Istanbul, home to Romani communities since the Byzantine Empire. The area has been increasingly demolished since 2006 as part of an “urban renewal” development project. Presented in the style of a music video, Wonderland captures the young men of the hip-hop group Tahribad-ı isyan rapping about inequality and gentrification as they are simultaneously confronted by the police.

Since the mid-1990s, Halil Altindere (Turkish, b. 1971) has emerged as one of the most prominent contemporary artists in Turkey with a practice that ranges from video, sculpture, photography, installation, and performance, to collaborative editorial and curatorial projects.

Exploration Gallery Our exploration gallery is an inspiring space to think, respond and play. Try your hand at designing and building at our drop-in making table, share your thoughts about how we plan for play in our towns and explore research on urban design, planning and recreation in Carlow.

Research at VISUAL Why is play important? How do we plan for play and recreation in our towns? Where is the ‘centre’ of Carlow town and how do people feel about it? How might our understanding of play and planning make everyday life better? How do we get actively involved in our towns? How do we communicate it? These are just some of the questions that are being researched through this season. Join in via our Play Time Symposium or explore research projects by 3rd level students from the School of Architecture, Dublin Institute of Technology, Department of Design; Designcore, Institute of Technology Carlow; and Dept of Graphic Design, Waterford Institute of Technology.

Be My Love — The Story of Mario Lanza

Film @ VISUAL Roman Holiday Celebrate St Valentine’s Day in VISUAL with a romantic film!

One of Hollywood’s most sweetly romantic films -- a frothy, modern telling of the Cinderella story, in reverse. It stars Gregory Peck as a reporter and Audrey Hepburn as a royal princess out to see Rome in this 1953 film directed and produced by William Wyler. Hepburn won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance; the screenplay and costume design also won.

The great conductor, Arturo Toscanini described him as “the greatest tenor of the twentieth century”. Movies like That Midnight Kiss, The Great Caruso, The Toast of New Orleans and The Student Prince brought his fame and his voice all around the world. Jose Carreras admitted that Lanza had been his inspiration and Placido Domingo said, “I owe my career in opera to a kid from Philadelphia!”.

He leaves behind a wonderful catalogue of recordings and 12 Gold Discs, including; Be my love, The Loveliest Night of the Year, Drink! Drink! Drink!, Because You’re Mine, and I’ll walk with God’s.

Premiered in 1961 at the Theatre Royal Stratford, having been rejected by the Abbey Theatre, Tom Murphy’s play went on to be a West End hit.

The story of the climactic confrontation between Michael, his father and brothers, a brawling, hard-drinking, criminal gang of Irish immigrants living and working in Coventry. A powerful portrayal of tribal violence and the devastation it brings in its wake. It remains Murphy’s best known and most performed play.

On March 4th, Eric Butler will present a selection of both emerging and well-known local acts for an evening showcasing Carlow’s musical talent. Come and enjoy a drink in the relaxed environment of the bar, while listening to an eclectic mix of artists, as well as Eric performing some of his own work.

Michael Harding is one of Ireland’s most distinctive writers and storytellers and his recent memoirs Staring at Lakes and Hanging with the Elephant have touched a chord with audiences throughout the country. Called ‘Pure Brilliant’ by Tommy Tiernan, the group have over four million hits on YouTube and have sold out five shows at Dublin’s Vicar Street. With regular sketches on RTE, viral comedy hits like ‘How to Speak Dublin’ and over 70,000 online followers, Foil Arms and Hog have established themselves amongst the new breed of Irish comedy stars. The Carlow College Literary Awards brings together the entire college community to recognise and celebrate the very best of Carlow College literary talent. The awards gather together the college literary community in a spirit of camaraderie and friendly competition to celebrate the best prose and poetry of the past year. First Year Creative Writing class will also present a showcase of their writing.

Ciaran Collins, author of The Gamal, winner of the Rooney Prize for Literature in 2013, and described by the New York Times as ‘remarkable’ and the Irish Times as ‘outstanding’, will present the awards as well as read from his work. Attend the ‘Join In Voicebox’ where we will have representatives from volunteer organisations around Carlow sharing information about their work and how people can get involved.

Spot some pop up exhibitions – design students from IT Carlow and Waterford IT and DIT School of Architecture will be presenting work, as well as some surprise pop up work at various locations.

Contribute to the discussion – there will be a number of events focussing on the role of town planning in the wellbeing of a community. Come to a workshop on creative regeneration led by Callan’s Workhouse Union, or see how the students of IT Carlow have used design to respond to a town planning challenge.

Get Sporty – Carlow Sports Partnership will host a family activity day where everyone can join in the games.

Enjoy great theatre which celebrates inclusion. VISUAL is proud to premier Equinox Theatre’s new production – The M House.

Host an event - If you would like to host your own event during the Join In Festival which highlights or celebrates participation, just get in touch and we’ll include you in the programme.

And of course - Come to the galleries – the playground project will be open all weekend with fun activities, free tours and a quiet reading space to chill out after all the play. Our galleries are always free to visit.

Alice is bored. Everything is school and homework and always doing what you’re told. Until she follows a White Rabbit down a hole and her whole life is quite literally turned upside down and almost inside out. Suddenly, she finds herself in a strange land with no school and no homework and no one telling you what to do! Far from being scared, Alice is curious and soon makes friends with Cats, Caterpillars and Queens. Unfortunately, friends become foes and Alice may be trapped forever.

How will she escape?

For many years Delta Centre has been showcasing the many talents and abilities of its learners through a combination of drama, song and dance. This inclusive, innovative and inspirational performance of people with different abilities, their carers’ and volunteers, is a model to be shared with all. This is a show about hope, happiness, friendship, and above all, the opportunity for our learners to showcase their many talents for families, friends and supporters.

The show will include drama and many songs and dances from well-known West End and Broadway shows. Over a hundred people will take to the stage in what promises to be a great performance for all to enjoy.

Showcasing the music, song and dance of Wales, Scotland, Brittany, Cornwall, Ireland and the Isle of Man.

The Ballet Barn will produce three stories for their 2017 show; (Cinderella, The Secret Garden and a mysterious Irish tale, The Well), choreographed by Adele Mealey and Aedeen O’Hagan with winners of the student choreographing competition.

Cinderella needs no explaining except the Fairy Godmother has many fairy friends to guide Cinderella to the Ball; In The Secret Garden we have Mary, an orphan who comes to an old drafty house, makes friends, discovers a garden with the help of a robin and helps to bring the garden to life and a cousin to walk again. The Well is an Irish folklore story about a girl who goes to a well and meets some faeries and a wise woman who warns her not to stay too long with the faeries or she will never get back home again.

Following the success of three major productions at Visual in 2016, Carlow Little Theatre Society return to the George Bernard Shaw in April 2017 with Marina Carr’s provocative and bewitching play ‘By the Bog of Cats’.

Blending Greek myth and Irish folklore, this surreal drama is loosely based on Euripides’ tragedy Medea and tells the prophetic tale of Hester Swane, an Irish Traveller, who attempts to come to terms with a lifetime of abandonment in a world where all whom she has loved have discarded her.

As ever in Carr’s dramas, the small community is populated by richly woven characters—from the outrageous, stultifying mother of the groom, Mrs. Kilbride, to the brutal and mercenary farmer, Xavier Cassidy. In the final moments of the action, we witness a woman provoked beyond the limits of human endurance.

By the Bog of Cats is a furious, uncompromising tale of greed and betrayal, of murder and profound self-sacrifice.

The second collaboration between Sligo County Council Arts Service, The Hawk’s Well Theatre Sligo, and Mikel Murfi. It was created for the Bealtaine Festival– Celebrating Creativity As We Age.

It is hard to pigeon hole Eric Lalor’s act. His warm, energetic onstage presence makes for an unforgettable experience for the audience. With gags that always hit the spot, his engaging, high intensity performances make him one of the top names of Irish comedians.

The other-worldly realm of fairies is brought to life in this musical performance for young children (aged 3 +). Developed and performed by Thomas Johnston (whistles/song) with Sean McElwain (guitar/fiddle/whistle), and Emma Fisher (puppeteer). Johnston and McElwain have been instrumental forces in garnering and fostering young interest in traditional musical forms in Ireland.

From its earliest beginning the Lambert family has been involved with RTE, working the hugely popular series Wanderly Wagon featuring the Late Eugene Lambert and Judge.

Paula Lambert was the ‘Bosco’ voice for seventeen years and Bosco is still a firm favourite with younger children and makes a nostalgic appearance in the opening part of the Show. Featuring large puppets and colourful sets.

Fourth Wall Theatre group is Co. Laois’s new theatre group consisting of new and experienced talent. The play stars Margaret McKenna, one of Carlow Little Theatre’s finest actors having recently appeared in Calendar Girls. It also features upcoming actor Carlow man James Aylesbury who appeared in Many Young Men of Twenty last season. The play also stars and is directed by Kevin Lalor-Fitzpatrick and Michelle O’Sullivan.
