Good Grief…Share
Grief Share has helped me realize there is hope during times of grief and mourning! I have had to lean on the Lord and others who have walked in my shoes.
Grief is a powerful emotion that is both natural and healthy. Nevertheless, grief can weigh us down with feelings of confusion and uncertainty! A job loss, a job transfer, a family situation, a health crisis, or the passing of a love one.
Probably too much information, but my mom passed on when I was 18, a month before I graduated from high school. She was 43. I was 21 when my first wife was killed in an auto accident. She was 23. My grandma died after her dream of seeing
Kenny Rogers was fulfilled. It was strange but she had a heart attack right after the concert, in the Astro-dome. Some of Houston’s finest were sitting right behind her and tried to revive her. They saw it happen and immediately began CPR. My Pops died in 1995, cancer had ravished his body. My mother-in-love made it to heaven, in 2002, about 6 months after being diagnosed with A.L.S. There are more, but that’s enough. The pain has subsided, but it has never left. I miss all of them greatly.
Grief Share has helped me deal with these deaths, although they happened many years ago. One of these occasions happened 5 years ago. I was sitting in a Grief Share class and I mentioned something about my mom’s passing that had bothered me for over 40 years. The help I received, after just one statement from Denise and Rickey Dorriety, relieved me of some guilt and pain that had plagued me for so long!
The Memorial Church of Christ is on the cutting edge of helping us deal with grief. We use material from Grief Share. It is good, it is powerful, and the lessons are practical.
Grief is OK. Jesus certainly grieved over his friend, Lazarus (John 11:17-37), over His people (Matthew 23:37-39), and even for Himself (Matthew 26:36-46).
Each Wednesday, beginning September 5, we will continue Grief Share. Please attend if you need some room to breathe…a time to reflect…a moment of respite. Room 148B…7:00 pm.
Blessings…Larry D. and Lou Ann Phillips
