Transcript of Central Region Venturing Newsletter - the Central Point - August 2013
2013 National Jamboree July 2013 was historical. Why you may ask? Well let me
answer that question for you in four words. Venturers at the
Summit! Yes, you heard that right! This was the first year
Venturers were allowed to go to the National Jamboree as
participants, but not only was that historical. This was the first
year at The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve
located in the mountains of West Virginia. Scouts were able to
whitewater raft, zip line, and a lot of things on wheels like
skateboarding, mountain biking, BMX, and mountain boarding
along with many more wonderful activities. Not only did the
Scouts get to participate in epic activities, but they also got the
chance to connect with Scouts from across the country.
Venturers had a sub-camp all to themselves called Foxtrot which
included the international Scouts.
Social media was an important part of the event, so if you
were able to attend you may have seen a few tweets or statuses
about all the different opportunities and favorite memories.
Personally, an event of this scale is life changing! The
learning experience that you gain not only from trying new
things, but meeting new people and sharing stories truly make its
a once in a lifetime event.

What's more fun than rock climbing, entering a volleyball tournament, stacking milk crates in the air, dancing, slacklining, making s'mores, riding in a hot air balloon, or hanging out with your crew? The answer can only be doing all of these things and much
more in one weekend! There's a reason we're calling this event the Fantastic Fortieth Fall Fun Rally and coming together from all over the nation to celebrate years of Venturing with thousands of other Venturers. This superhero themed campout is held within the borders of the Greater St. Louis Area Council at Beaumont Scout Reservation on September 27-29, 2013. With the help of various groups, there are countless activities throughout the weekend to fit everyone's interests. In addition to the fun activities, the Area 3 Officers will be there to host trainings for both youth and adults focusing on topics that range from backpacking to awards to an ILSC/ILSS. The Fall Fun Rally is an excellent opportunity to learn more about Venturing, recruit new members, make new friends and Venturing contacts, all while having fun! If you're interested in being around fellow Venturing superheroes, get registered today and find more information at www.fallfunrally.org. It's something you won't want to miss.
I hope you're ready, I'll see you there!

Name That Camp!!
Did You Know…
It is possible to lead a cow
upstairs, but not downstairs.
A “jiffy” is an actual unit of
time—1/100th of a second.
Four year old kids ask around
400 questions every day.
Taste buds change every seven
years.
Area 7 Venturing Extravaganza The 3rd annual Area 7 Extravaganza will be on Saturday October 5th, 2013 at Rainbow Scout Reservation in Morris, Illinois. Registration begins at 8 am and a bonfire will wrap up the day by 9 pm. The cost for those registering before September 27th is $30 per person, after is $35 per person. Lunch and dinner will be provided. This year’s event will have all of the old favorites from years past, such as a wide variety of shooting opportunities including shotgun shooting, archery, and pistol shooting. The Area 7 Venturing Top Shot competition has returned, and the trophy will pass to a new winner....or will it? This year competitors will also have the opportunity to utilize previously unavailable firearms! The high COPE course is available once more. The courses were very popular last year, so make sure to register early to ensure a spot. Other returning events include Dutch Oven cooking and climbing. (Not Dutch Oven climbing; That would be an interesting event, however, for reasons unknown, no one has been willing to try
climbing with Dutch Ovens attached to their hands and feet.) While we have many returning events, do not think that the Extravaganza will be the same as years previous! This year’s theme is the Olympic games, so bring your game face, a competitive spirit, and some friends to help give you a boost in group competitions. More details on events to come! Interested in camping? Want to make it a weekend? Camping is available for free to all registered participants for both Friday and Saturday nights. Contact Katlin Adams or Kris Zahrobsky with any questions and/or concerns, or send an email to: [email protected]! National Youth Leadership
Training
National Youth Leadership
Training is BSA’s current nationally
approved leadership training, open
to both Boy Scouts and Venturers
alike. Councils putting on NYLT
courses offer an exciting and
educational program intended to
provide youth members with
leadership skills and experiences
they can utilize throughout their
lives, both inside their units and
beyond. NYLT courses are typically
presented as a week long camping
opportunity, making the training
more than hours spent sitting in a
classroom. Courses often offer
opportunities such as search and
rescue exercises, geocaching, and
much more! To find a course near
you, check out your council’s
website or www.crventuring.org!
We know you can do better than this caption! Send in your caption, name, and council you are from to [email protected]. If you win, your caption will be featured in next month’s newsletter and on our Facebook page. Check back next month to see who wins.
