2016-17 Annual Report2016-17 Annual ReportCentral PA’s Jewish Day School

I write to you this year more convinced than ever of the power of a Silver Academy education to better the world.

In that spirit, I would like to share with you a portion of the speech given by Chaim Bell at

his Silver Academy graduation this past June. Chaim focused his remarks on the obligation to honor all beings, kavod habriot.“It’s very easy to respect someone like you but disregard someone different. Perhaps this is why we are commanded no less than thirty-six times throughout the Torah not to do wrong to the ger. Ger literally means stranger or convert but generally means those that are liable to oppression or discrimination. As the ger is more vulnerable than other human beings, the punishment for wronging them is quite severe…Being reminded not to harm the ger can make us stop and think before we alienate someone different from us. I think this is especially important to remember among my peers, teenagers. Though each of us was created in the image of G-d, we all have unique strengths and challenges. If we can remember that we each have an Inner Ger—something making us vulnerable—perhaps it will remind us to respect each other so we are not guilty of exploiting the vulnerable in others. The Silver Academy understands this very well. It recognizes the best in every child and helps them grow. This is one of the many reasons I love The Silver Academy.”Thanks to your past support, The Silver Academy has been able to teach these important lessons, developing not just minds, but powerful, sensitive and understanding souls.Your continued support enables the cultivation of mensches. I thank you in advance for fostering the academic and spiritual development of these all too rare and valuable community members and future leaders. Your contribution to The Silver Academy is an investment in a bright future.I hope you will share these thoughts with friends and family. We would be happy to give you a taste of the magic occurring at The Silver Academy each day. I invite you to bring a friend and tour the school; let the voices of our children uplift you!My sincerest wishes for a healthy, happy, and spiritually nourishing year to you and your families.B’todah, Holly Engelman President, The Silver Academy Board

Dear Friends,

“I love this school so much! “I don’t want to leave!” These are the statements I heard our 8th graders uttering at graduation when they realized their days at The Silver Academy were coming to an end. After all, they had spent the majority of their lives learning, studying, and growing intellectually, socially, and emotionally within our walls. And while we love and are attached to these students, we recognize that these comments are the greatest compliments in the world! These feelings do not merely happen. Great teachers, cutting edge curriculum, and a philosophy that recognizes the ‘whole’ student, putting the student and his or her individual needs at the center of the educational process, is what separates Silver from other private schools. Academic excellence and ongoing assessment of our dual curriculum assures our students and families that they are not only receiving the highest Jewish and general studies education, but they are also getting a solid foundation for Jewish living and Jewish leadership. There is no better investment that you can make—an investment in our future—an investment in The Silver Academy. But, the next chapter must be written together. The belief that academic excellence is achievable at The Silver Academy is just the beginning. Through our conversations with alumni, we have been told time and time again how Silver prepared them academically to be successful in high school and beyond, and gave them a strong Jewish foundation that encouraged service and a commitment to our heritage. The students at The Silver Academy are our future leaders, our future philanthropists, and most importantly, the future of our incredible Harrisburg Jewish community.Let’s write the next chapter together. Thank you for your financial support of The Silver Academy. I urge you to maintain or increase your support in the year to come.

National Average

Terra Nova is a series of standardized achievement tests designed to assess student achievement in reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, vocabulary, spelling, and writing. The students’ scores reflect their achievement in comparison to all students who took the test nationally. This is expressed as a raw score that is then converted to a percentile. In the 2016-2017 school year, the average percentile score for all subjects, in all grades, was far above the national average.

The Silver Academy Foundation supports the interests of The Silver Academy, and advances traditional Jewish education. Generous contributors started making “endowment fund” gifts to The Rabbi David L. Silver Yeshiva Academy in the 1970s. These gifts and others grew until the school’s board recognized it would be prudent to place these funds into a separate entity, independent from the school. Founded in 1993 as a 501 (c)(3) organization, the Foundation received its initial funding from these early investments held by The Silver Academy. An independent board manages the Foundation’s assets. These initial investments have been supplemented by additional con-tributions made by friends of the School. This grew to well over one million dollars in the first decade of our existence. For the last few years, an average of over $150,000 per year has been advanced or loaned to the School for scholarships and to supplement the budget leaving the current assets of the Foundation at a little over $200,000.The members of the Foundation’s Board wish to thank you for your support.
