Central Oregon Dental Society News Note from Debbie Stumbaugh and the Medical Teams International Dental Van I just wanted to thank all of you and tell you how much I appreciated the support of the Central Oregon

Dental Society. Over the past 10 years so many of the local Doctors have provided much needed help to those that had no income or access to dental care.

As of March 3rd, I will no longer work with Medical Teams International, and the Van will not be in the area until a replacement is found. I wanted everyone to know what an honor it was to work with the local

dental society and for all of their support over the past 10 years.

It has been a wonderful time and I have so enjoyed getting to know so many of the local Dentists.

With Much Gratefulness Debbie Stumbaugh

Kemple Memorial Children’s Dental Clinic News for March 2017 Suzanne Browning Special thanks to all volunteer dentists that donated services to Kemple Clinic. We could not carry out our efforts without the donation of time, consultation, uncompensated treatments and support from these generous dental professionals. The following is the THANK YOU that will appear in the Bend Bulletin nest week

(for February In-Kind services):

Page 5: CENTRAL OREGON DENTAL NEWSLETTER - WEO Media · The Newsletter is also being sent as an attachment along with this email, for those whose mobile devices or computers convert the content

The following story appeared in the Family Access Network (FAN) newsletter last month. Once again, special thanks to our local volunteer dentists… as many of you know, these situations occur often and with your continuous support (either through pro bono dental treatments, participating in the Brighter Smiles Campaign, or monetary donations) we

are all able to do our part to ensure healthy kids, ready to learn!!

Anne's Story Anne couldn't chew without shooting pains. She hated going to lunch with her third grade class each day because she knew she'd leave hungry, unable to eat anything without tremendous effort. Anne needed several teeth extracted, a service not provided by her Oregon Health Plan insurance. After noticing her pain, Anne's teacher sent the family to the FAN office. The FAN advocate helped Anne's mom complete and submit an application to the Kemple Dental Clinic. They arranged for a local dentist to donate the extraction services needed. Today, Anne can chew without pain, enjoys lunch with her friends, and is happy to be back in school.

Thank you for being a part of our work. Together, we are meeting the needs of our communities.

With Gratitude, (signed) Julie N. Lyche, Executive Director, Family Access Network

went on to complete a Hospital Residency Program. His new practice in Sunriver will focus on TMJ Pain and Discomfort. During his Residency Program, he studied under world renowned Serbian TMJ expert, Dr.

Opinion & Advice Corner We’re starting a new monthly column, where we’ll ask retired or long-time practicing Dentists to share their opinions and

suggestions on various relevant topics.

Our Guest this month is Dr. John Pavlicek.

John ran a successful Redmond Dental Practice for years and is spending his dental retirement traveling

and tending to his various other business interests.

John was asked to comment on the current state of the Dental profession and for his thoughts on increasing the number of dentists who become members of organized dentistry and join their local Dental

Society, Oregon Dental Association and the American Dental Association.

Here are John’s comments:

For those dentists that do not belong to organized dentistry, my suggestions are:

1. For one year, send them all ODA, ADA, CODS news items, brochures, etc. … free of charge. They say

we don’t do anything, so let them see what is being done by many of our fellow dentists who fight on our behalf. They have no idea what goes on to keep us from becoming like the physicians. Something like

15 % of physicians belong to the American Medical Association! Most non-members do not know what is

being done on their behalf, and as a result are unappreciative of that work and not willing to pay for membership.

2. Our CODS dinner meetings should be free for maybe three times for non-members. They should be

able to come, listen and discuss what is being done. I really think all dentists at our local meetings should have name tags and stand up and introduce themselves. We don’t do that anymore and how will we get to

know each other if we aren’t introducing ourselves? We should all know each other’s names , where we were raised, dental school attended — just brief stuff so we can remember each other. If I were a non-

member, why would I want to pay $50 for a dinner — what's the benefit? The way to sell organized

dentistry is to show the non-members the benefits!!

3. Get a list of all the dentists in Oregon who are not members of organized dentistry and send that list to all the dentists who are – and ask them to contact those they know and invite them personally to join.

In the business world, I have learned that one has to give a carrot or two, to get what you want or

need. Maybe negotiate with the Riverhouse on meal cost for non-members. If we increase our membership, they will also benefit in the long run.

I hope my suggestions might be of some benefit. I still have a passion for dentistry and don’t want to see dentistry being controlled by non-dentists, insurance companies or the government. It’s already

happened to medicine and I wish dentists would become more organized and control their own futures.

Common Sense, Practical, Practice Management Advice for Dental Professionals

The All-Knowing, All-Seeing, GURU of Everything Dental & Mental

Dear Dr. Rupert

(Please submit your questions, comments or disgruntled remarks to [email protected])

Dear Dr. Rupert, I’m a recent Dental School graduate and I would like to start my own Dental Practice. There are 30-40 great Dental Practices in my hometown and I just don’t know how I’m going to draw patients into my practice. I need some help in setting my practice apart from everybody else. Do you have any suggestions or ideas? Signed, Ideas for a New Dental Practice - - - - - - Dear Ideas for a New Dental Practice, On one of my many satellite offices, I recently started an Evangelical Dental Clinic which is rocking and rolling right now! We keep growing and I just don’t know what to do with all these new patients that keep coming in! I do the same dentistry that I do on everybody else, but instead of my usual talk about plaque, bacteria, pockets, bone loss, decay, infection, evidence-based pros/cons and various treatment options; I only say things that have an evangelical undertone. I tell you … it has made my life so much easier! The patients seem to understand the situation and overwhelmingly accept my recommendations. It cuts down on the confusion and lack of understanding about the disease process and treatment options. Here’s a table that I use in my Evangelical Dental Clinic which sort of explains how I’ve changed things around:

What I used to say before: What I say in my Evangelical Dental Clinic:

“I see three interproximal cavities on your x-rays.” “The Devil has infected three of your teeth!”

“See this darkened area on your x-ray? Your film shows a necrotic tooth, which we need to do a root canal on.”

“We need to do a root canal to release Satan from deep beneath your tooth!”

“I have cleaned out the cavity, placed a liner base and filled the tooth. Because of the depth and proximity of the cavity to the nerve, this tooth may need a root canal and or crown in the future.”

“I want you to pray every night, so that this tooth will get better and not need more work.”

“I realize the treatment is expensive, and that we have already exceeded your insurance benefits for the year; but we really need to do the crown and it is the best option at this time.”

“Unless you send in more money, we won’t be able to do the good work that has kept teeth in the mouths of thousands of our heaven bound patients.”

Page 11: CENTRAL OREGON DENTAL NEWSLETTER - WEO Media · The Newsletter is also being sent as an attachment along with this email, for those whose mobile devices or computers convert the content

“Are you currently brushing two times a day? Are you brushing for at least two minutes? How often do you floss? Are you having daily sweetened drinks and coffees?”

“Confess your dental sins and you shall be set free!”

“Your dental insurance company has failed to pre-authorize your treatment.”

“Satan works in mysterious ways.”

“I don’t know why your kids don’t ever get cavities? They have plaque all over their teeth, they don’t brush, they don’t floss and they eat junk food constantly!”

“The Lord works in mysterious ways.”

You get my drift? If you want my advice for a different kind of practice, I’d say for you to go Evangelical. Blame all the bad things that happen in the mouth on the Devil and that will allow you to ask for as much money as you need to address those problems. Look at how many different Evangelical TV Stations and shows are on TV right now … they’re all making money hand over fist. Dentists need to get on that gravy train too. People don’t mind spending their money, if they think it’s going to help them get into heaven. Glad I could help, Dr. Rupert

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Dr. Rupert, Lots of patients often times ask us why we aren’t Preferred Providers for their insurance company? I never know the right thing to say. Signed, What Should I Say? - - - - - - Dear What Should I Say? Whenever a patient asks me why we aren’t Preferred Providers for their lame Insurance Company, I answer their questions with another question. I ask the patient to call and ask their Insurance Company why they don’t accept our Fee Schedule? It really should be up to the Insurance Company to become a Preferred Insurer, rather than the Dentist to become a Preferred Provider. Insurance companies can’t provide the dentistry without the Dentists … so quit letting them dictate your fee schedule. Glad I could help, Dr. Rupert
