Location, location, location is not just an adage for real estate. Itsalso a prime focus for wineries, and Edna Valley Vineyards has notonly the great views, but great soil to make great wines. The stunningviews from the expansive glass windows of the tasting room to the

vineyards and hills in the distance is, hands-down, one of the bestviews youll find in any tasting room on the Central Coast. Located inthe Edna Valley, the tasting room is an easy drive off Highway 101 inthe heart of San Luis Obispo wine country, and it is consistently ratedBest Tasting Room in San Luis Obispo in an annual newspaper poll. From the tasting room you can also see the formations of the NineSisters, a succession of ancient volcanoes which stretch from the valleyto the ocean, the most well-known of these dormant rock moundsbeing Morro Rock.

As you pull into the parking lot youll see a demonstration vineyardto your left which showcases the differences in trellising techniques of various vines, and you can grab a bench and sit outside and bask inthe tranquility of the region. And of course grapes are of paramountimportance here. Winemaker Josh Baker makes a lot of wine, but alsoproduces 17 different limited production wines only found in thespacious tasting room or through their wine club. WINE COUNTRY NEWS| WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH

by KimMurphy-Rodrigues Winter is here and presents the perfect

opportunity to plan a wine country getaway, complete with wine tasting, sampling of greatlocal cuisine and partaking in some fabulousantiquing here on the Central Coast. Visitors, who are traveling through Paso Robles viaHighway 101, are in for an extraordinary treatas they step back in time with a stop at theVineyard Antique Mall.

Located a short distance south of this agri-cultural heartland, the Vineyard Antique Mallcalls a formidable, large rustic brown barnhome, with the structure providing anauthentic setting for a journey through pasteras. As you enter, memorabilia from earlierdecades beckon, with baseball trading cards

from the San Francisco Giants to the BostonRed Sox tucked away in boxes amidst thecache of Marvel comic books, while a show-case provides the setting for a colorful collec-tion of vintage glass marbles, includingketchup and mustard marbles and the preva-lent cats eyes.

In 2003 Carina Cellars was launched as a vision between wine-

maker Joey Tensley and businessman David Hardee. It was a meetingthat might seem out of place, given that the two men come fromopposite places. Tensley grew up in Bakersfield and first discoveredwine at age 12 and no, he was not tasting it. He was on a soccer teamthat took him to play in Bordeaux and the young team got a tour of the winery. He knew in an instant that he wanted to be a winemaker. That pretty much made me the only kid growing up in Bakersfieldwith that particular dream, he says with a chuckle. He moved toSanta Barbara and gained an understanding of wine by jobs as anassistant winemaker at the well-regarded Babcock and Beckmenwineries.

Hardee, by contrast, was involved in law and he charted out

Carina Cellars as a simple extension of his meticulous planning usedas an attorney. He was fully aware of the idea of starting slowly andidentifying a long term approach to the winery. In a start-up opera-tion, you try to eliminate as many potential obstacles as you can, hesays referring to what wines he wanted to make. The Rhone varietieswere a more logical choice over the oft-planted Pinot Noir andChardonnay, and Syrah was the main focus. Our winemakingapproach is traditional and minimalist, Hardee admits. We partnerwith growers who share our philosophy on farming, dedication tocanopy management, low yields and fruit balance. We think thatcreates the best wines, rich in traditional varietal flavors and the

terrior of the vineyard, he says. And Tensley agrees. Syrah is hip and the cool thing about it is that it adapts well to varigrowing conditions, he says. The name Carina was used since it

the name of Hardees 54 foot sailboat, which he had sailed all overEast Coast. His boat had always brought him good fortune wonderful experiences, a mantle the winery now possesses.

Carina Cellars has made a name for themselves with Syspecifically Syrah coming from the well-regarded Colsen Can Vineyard. The approximately 15-acre vineyard is located in the Rafael Mountains high above the Santa Maria Valley. The farminthese vines produces extremely low yields of small clusters of berries helping to make dense wines, which is why the fruit is higsought-after. One of Carinas best known offerings is called thPercent, an unusual blending of red and white wines of 93 percSyrah and seven percent Viognier. Receiving high marks from

national wine press, this wine is a must-have and has become onetheir flagship wines. The Viognier adds just a few floral notes toaroma, a touch of citrus on the palate and just enough creaminessmellow out the tannins, but the Syrah is bringing the most to tparty with lush, dark fruit and hints of green peppercorn, sHardee. And he has in mind the perfect food complement to twine which includes marbled rib eye steak, red wine braised bshort ribs, sweet and spicy pork ribs, or braised lamb shank. Tmay seem like a plethora of choices, but that is how Tensley crthe wines; to be used on a broad palette.

They also launched a blend, Iconoclast, which has merged N

white lovers, there is the hard to find Grenache Blanc.Their tasting room also features rotating art which hugs the rusticlooking tasting room walls. They have long been dedicated to localart, and in fact most artists do so well with their work that CarinaCellars is almost like an art gallery itself.

Located right in downtown Los Olivos, this is one on the best andmost consistent wineries. For Valentines Day they will, again, be cele-brating their annual Perfect Pairing: Valentines Day Cheese &Chocolate Celebration held on Saturday, February 12th from 6 to 8p.m. This pairing of cheese from around the world with local choco-lates and Carina Cellars wines is always a sellout and is one of theirmost popular events.

And as popular as their wines are, and with as much talk aboutwine pairings, proper stemware and the right way to taste wine asthere is these days, ultimately, Hardee sees wine in its proper perspec-tive. Fine wine is like fine art, it is subjective. There is no definitiveright or wrong pairing, just personal preference. Discover your ownpreferences by visiting Carina Cellars at 2900 Grand Ave. in LosOlivos. Contact them at (805) 688-2459 or www.carinacellars.com.They are open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and tasting fees are $10.

John Pianettas enthusiasm for wine-making and abiding love for farming is in his

blood. At home among the vines, his 95-acreranch, just North of San Miguel in MontereyCounty, is situated on Big Sandy Creek inIndian Valley. Under triple digit summersuns, and crisp cool nights, it is here wherehis ode to traditional style winemaking isnurtured, growing Cabernet Sauvignon andSyrah varietals.

With spring weather approaching and therelative quiet of winter fading fast, WineCountry This Month checked in with John forsome observations by this farmer who makes

wine. Each year is new and exciting in a smallwinery, says John. Each vintage is influ-enced so much for so many thingsthroughout the growing and harvest seasons. These elements create both subtle and drasticeffects within each variety, which makeswinemaking an ongoing challenge as well asan exciting undertaking. There is never oneyear the same!

Pianetta Winerys plans for the future areanything but grandiose. Right now the plan

is to remain small. We have had a great timeso far building our small winery, and gettingto know the customer who is enjoying ourproduct. Says John. We are very excitedabout our 2009 vintage wines, which will bebottled in June. Each new vintage always hasits special qualities, but we feel that 2009 willbe outstanding across the board. Pianetta

will also be offering a new Jug Wine, whichoriginally was created from an accidentaloversight during their regular bottling. We just ended up with a little bit of extra wineand we needed to bottle it, says CaitlinPianetta, Johns daughter so we blended ittogether and bottled it in these little Jugs. The Jug Wine is described as quite acharmer and Pianetta hopes to be able tosoon stock it year round in an effort to high-light their devotion to unpretentiousquality.

What John is foremost geared towardhis craft is flavor and balance. Althothere are definitely a lot of numbers science behind our wines, in the end

always comes down to flavor, especwhen we create our blends. For exameach year when we create our Bilaninstead of using the same blend percentayear after year we arrange a tasting panewinery employees, family members, seasoned tasters to target a flavor. Wback and forth with different blends until reach a flavor we all appreciate. It learning process for everyone, but a venjoyable one!

Pianetta is currently celebrating their n

2008 releases: their inaugural vintageBarbera, their new Pianetta Estate CaberSauvignon, and their Pianetta Sangioves2011 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Comptition gold medal winner!
